Loved the character and the environment, the music was fitting, although it sometimes stopped playing and the game stayed silent with just the fx sounds. Also maybe you could leave the texts on screen for a little longer, they dissappeared too fast sometimes and I couldn't properly read what it said. Other than that I really liked it! :)

Could you provide a Linux build too, please?

Developer

Yes, of course! We are so sorry for not having a more assessable game for everyone to play, we are working on adding a version for Mac and Linux. We will make a post about when those updates are implemented, we would love for you to play Hopping home once those changes are made and you get the chance!

Played and rated.

The visuals look great, the music and the theme are fitting. What bothered was that is was pretty unclear of what to do, and the text bubbles disappeared too fast.

Overall the look and concept of the game is great, and only lacks more guidance on our objective in the game. Good job for this game jam! :)

Would appreciate if you check out and rate our game as well: https://hadilepanda.itch.io/rise-of-necromancy

Thank you so much for the feedback and we're glad you enjoyed Hopping Home! We are currently working on implementing a more user friendly ui to help drive the story, gameplay mechanics, and help out the player to know where to go! Ill go check out your game right now!

Fantastic game!  The visuals, the music, the gameplay and an original idea!!  Good work!  I will put it on my list to revisit it again after the jam.

I would suggest only two things:

-I find the camera a little low.  I would put it a little high so you can see more.

-The subtitles are visually a little "hard" (I don't know how to explain it, English is not my first language).  They take a lot of screen...  Perhaps some translucid background to the letters?

Congratulations!  It is a cute, fun game!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! We are very happy you enjoyed playing our game! We are currently working on making game play a smoother and more immersive. On that list is adding the ability to use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out and fix the ui to blend more with the games aesthetic, thus improving overall ux. We will make a post about it when all the changes are added, we'd love you to play again hopping home again once those changes are implemented!

I really enjoyed playing. visuals and audio was really well done, and I really got a laugh out of the katana death animation. I did have a bit of a difficulty bump with the lili-pad section. the running felt like i was on ice skates and sliding off the lili-pads constantly. Overall very well done and very enjoyable cute game

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! We are glad you liked the game and got some enjoyment out of it. We are working on tweaking the character movement particularly in the water level because we agree, it is pretty difficult. We are also working on saving progress and having checkpoints throughout the level so if you die close to the end you don't have to start over.

Submitted

Oh wow. Very well done, the ambiance was amazing, truly a job well done. Loved the mechanics of switching between life and death and having unique abilities for each. Very well done! Bravo!

Thank you, we really appreciate it! We are glad you liked it!

Pretty ambitious project for a game jam: very impressed with the size of the levels and the puzzle design. I think that the spirit form would benefit from "ethereal" vision of the world (maybe a post process effect). This would be both for style and to hint to the player where to go and with what objects to interact.

Discovering what the katana was used for made me laugh and cry at the same time; but it made me excited to go to ghost form each time. Definitely a fun game. I didn't finish it but this is one I plan to come back to soon.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback! We think the ethereal post process idea is a really good one. Some of the other games we have checked out had their own version of this, so it is definitely something we will try and work on in the future. We are glad you liked the game! If you do end up finishing it, please let us know how you liked the ending!

Interesting game, I really liked the basic idea that you can move around and interact with the world in two forms. The world itself is very beautiful. Most of all I liked to travel as a ghost, he is very cute. I also liked the "death" animation, it's funny :D
Great job ;)

Developer

Thank you! We are glad you enjoyed the game and liked the world!

Loved the theme of sacrificing yourself, that was a nice touch. The world itself was really nice and big to explore. I did however feel quite lost and wasn't sure what to do. I couldn't get the key and wasn't sure what interacting with the bonfire did (it acknowledge I did so but I wasn't sure).

With a bit more direction, I think it could be really successful. Nicely done :)

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! We are going to definitely work on assisting the player a little more in the beginning and providing just a little more guidance.

Nice level scale, making the frog feel small to the world with the large logs, grass and mushrooms. The church kinda stands out then as in comparison to the large tree.

Movement feels like walking on ice, slippery - it's easy to fall of edges. And quite hard to precisely jump on platforms. Especially very punishing inside the tree and at the water stage - 1 slip up and you have to reset.

I love the sacrifice mechanic. Very on theme and a nice mechanic to create to some puzzles. A note though: After you sacrifice the body has physics and can roll down the hill and get stuck or below the world.

I like the lightning near the key - really tells the player where to go - there is something important here.

However it's not easy to tell where to go after that - the level gates are not as obviuous- it took me at least 15 minutes to find the first gate ;)

In the beginning tree part I had to cheat a bit. The ghost form resetted for me there a lot, and had to get the key by dropping from the top.

The texts on screen goes away quickly when you move - letting you easily miss important info.

If you can tell the mechanics and objectives of the game withough too much words, that would be awesome.

Well done you submitted the nice project you have! You have made a lot of puzzle elements in the level in a short time. I enjoyed the sacrifice animation and hard jumping puzzles!

Developer

Thank you so much for the detailed response, we really appreciate it! Thank you for all the feedback as well, we didn't have a lot of time to bug test too much and no one outside of us play-tested it. We are definitely going to add a little bit more direction and hints as you suggested and in retrospect finding the loading areas is not really obvious. For the first tree level, you were supposed to drop down to get the key, but like you (and others) stated, there wasn't really enough guidance to indicate what the player should actually do, so we will definitely be working on that. Again, thanks for the really detailed response! We are glad you liked it!

Good game! I really love the graphics and the seppuku was well thought :D The only thing that made me enjoy it less was my very low fps, but I guess that's because of my potato pc. Overall great job!

Developer

We are glad you enjoyed it! We didn't have enough time to really optimize the product or test it on multiple devices, so that's a good shout out. We are going to work on optimization a little bit to hopefully get good performance on a wider range of machines.

The mechanics of the game are a tad wonky. I'm not sure what I did with Ghost after I committed suicide. The game's environment is fantastic. However, there are a few things that need to be polished for this game.

Developer

We appreciate the feedback! We are going to work on polishing up and directing the player a bit more in a future release, and hopefully strike a good balance between helping the player vs. making the game too easy.

Submitted

I adore the visuals and laughed my ass off when the character seppukku'd himself xD The controls are a little slippery and there are harsh colliders and I didn't know what the suicide mechanic was for but overall great job!

Developer

Thank you! We tried to make that a funny and enjoyable experience for the player. We are definitely going to work on directing the player a little bit better than we did in this release, as well as make the controls a little less touchy. We appreciate the feedback!

Submitted

Really enjoyed this game, it felt like a true adventure experience. My biggest critique is that sometimes the colliders around an object were weird and would cause me to fall off of something taking away from the experience. Other than that you killed it, if you want go ahead and check out my submission for this jam: https://banquoslayer.itch.io/ghost-survivor

Developer

We will certainly be working on this in future releases. Colliders being really clear and consistent is critical for a platformer to be successful and enjoyable and we (and others) have noted this issue as well. Other than that, we are glad you liked the game!
