How does you game fit the theme?
The ContraCube is not really a cube, a sphere, or a capsule. You take control of the ContraCube and make sure it can get to the end before it pops out of reality.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
No. The assets I used are listed in the game description as well as several of Brackeys Tutorials.

This is honestly a really fun game! It's challenging enough that I don't beat the levels on first try but I still wanna go back and replay them. Reminds me a bit of the Run flash games. One thing that might be cool to see is an endless mode that keeps generating the level as you go on, but the levels you created are pretty good too. Good job!

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to play my game. I really appreciate it. The endless level mode is one of the main things I want to try and get into V2.  thanks for much for your feedback.

Really fun and addictive gameplay, really nice looking graphics, and a different spin on the theme I haven't seen yet, Great job, keep up the good work!

Developer

Thank you so much for taking the time to play my game! I really appreciate it.

I hope you'll find the time to give V2 a try when it comes out with everyones input added to it.

This is the most fun I've had this jam, awesome job! It's kinda brutally hard, but I still finished the game because it's that good. There's a surprising amount of depth to this concept: how you play it totally depends on your shape, and then you have different strategies for the obstacles, avoid or speed bump or jump off the slanted sides (I spent several runs trying to avoid everything by jumping off the sides when I discovered you can do that. It didn't work, but it was fun).

I really like this game, so I'm gonna nitpick. Very often, a single hit would spin you out of control and get rid of all three lives. Also, you could get multiple hits on a single block or adjacent blocks. Either get rid of multiple lives, or make it so this doesn't happen, it's frustrating to have 1 mistake mean 3 lives lost. Also, the side to side acceleration was a lot for how fast you accelerated forwards. I got used to it, so I don't know if it needs to change, but it was frustrating at the start, so take that how you will. Lastly, I think this game needs to decide if it wants to include some path planning, or be entirely think on your feet. It kinda felt like it was alternating between the two depending on the level.

You did a great job with this, fantastic work!

Developer

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it, and I'm glad you had so much fun playing it.

The single hit taking off multiple lives has been updated for V2 and will no longer be an issue when that gets pushed out.

As for the level design, you're absolutely right. I didn't give enough time to fully plan out the levels like I would have liked. I've been going through with much more intention when planning the levels. I've gone with a duel approach. Keeping the preplanned levels (with better design) but having a procedurally generated free play mode.  That seems like it would be the best of both worlds.

Thanks again for your input, it is very helpful. I'll make sure to let you know when I get V2 out.

Really awesome game. It seems you upgraded Brackeys game thousand times (this one). I like that game flow and graphics. Audio was very cool as well. I would make the score do something. For example best score on each level that you can see after pressing a button in main menu. Keep it up.

Developer

Thanks for playing through the game.

That's exactly what I've done. Figured it would be a good place to start from and expand and learn with.  I look forward to V2 of this game and my next game jam!

i quite love it kinda remind of of a runner games i play in the past

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you like it! Hopefully v2 still brings you back to the good ol' days. 😁

Very nice game! This kind of reminds me of my first game that was made following a brackeys tutorial, but better!

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to play my game, I really appreciate it.

Developer

For anyone curious. I've posted a devlog of what I hope to implement better in V2 here: https://ejgarner118.itch.io/contracube/devlog/355197/post-game-jam-info

I will have a playable version uploaded soon to the latest changes. But want to let this jam come to an end first.

Lots of possible areas to explore with this game: powerups, alternate paths, more movement options, more shapes/shape evolution. Just wish the physics was a bit easier to work with since it required high precision.

Developer

I'll make sure to put together a proper devlog as I get V2 ready, but several of those things are certainly on the radar to implement.  It has seemed the biggest thing was level design, which I've been focusing on.

Alternate routes is one thing I had been thinking of, for sure. As well as potentially interesting ways to get to the different routes.  My ultimate path for release, I think, is going to be mobile devices, so I'll be a bit limited in what I can do for controls, but hopefully will have ironed a few things out to make that more enjoyable.

I really like the idea of shape evolution and hadn't really thought of that. I really appreciate you taking the time!

The sense of pace is really nice when you get going

But I think the levels are a bit too tightly packed to really be playable, especially without invincibility frames, and the rotation feature was just useless

But I had fun and especially the first few levels really nail the balance between breakneck pacing and throwing obstacles at you which made this the first game of the jam where I audibly laughed with glee at how enjoyable it was!

(A main menu button would be nice tho, I thought the game crashed when I pressed esc)

Developer

If this game made one person "audibly laugh with glee" then I'm going to count this as a raving success in my book.  Thank you so much for playing.

I'll be getting all of the comments from everyone here, and any other playtesting, and should be getting a more polished and full version released within the month.  And there will absolutely be a menu :D

Submitted(+1)

I am very much looking forward to the full release then!

Developer

I'm doing another game jam that is about remaking another game. I'm going to be using that excuse and deadline to try and get things polished up here and released on the mobile platform also.

Developer

I agree on the levels.  I need to slowly bump up in intensity and have a bit more of plan with the level layout. I think I just wanted to make it as much as I could for the jam and it lost a little bit of polish there.

I'll be updating all the levels, cleaning up some game mechanics, adding an in game menu, and hopefully adding a procedurally generated level mode as well

Submitted(+1)

Nice runner. I like the fact that I can change shapes, I think you have a cool core mechanic in there with it, like forcing you to be more precise with the shape you need to move forward.
I liked the level generation and feel of speed.

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to play my game, I really appreciate it.

That's one of the things I'm hoping to address with cleaning up the levels a bit.  Put more planning behind where everything goes, and how the different shapes can help/hurt you along the way.

Rated!, got a good run, but the fps drop a while, might be my laptops fault, but still, good job! XD

also would you kindly help rate mine too? it'd be a huuuge help!, THANKS a LOT!!!

Developer

Thanks for giving it a play. Sorry to hear you had some performance issues.  Optimization is next on my list of things to update.

Submitted(+1)

Hi. Your game is cool and fun. I like it.

But when I played 2+ levels, FPS dropped down to 10 or less. Also you need make exit to main menu on button or Escape.

Game is very detailed, but my computer can't stand it, so I couldn't play with all fun, becuse of freezing.

Developer (1 edit)

I'm very sorry to hear that. I'll make sure to optimize things for the next update.  I'll let you know when I have things cleaned up and hopefully you can give it another play.

Thanks for playing.

Submitted(+1)

That really sucked me in.  I kept trying to get sphere's cause they're easier to control, but it qickly becomes apparent that isn't necessarily the best opiton.

Developer

Awesome! I'm glad you liked it! Keeping things balanced certainly took a bit of thinking. Maybe a little too much, as it didn't leave me enough time to polish the levels really well.

Submitted(+1)

Great game, very interesting visuals!

I just rated your game, maybe you can do the same on mine ^_^

Developer

Thanks for playing. I'm glad you liked it.  I'll try and keep the same vibe going forward.

I just played your game!  Super Funny!

Submitted(+1)

I really enjoyed the game, and the music was great! It felt great bumping into the obstacles and flying into the air!

Developer

Thank you so much for playing!  I'm glad you liked it.  I'll do my best to keep the same vibe as I expand on a few things. I hope you'll play V2 :D

I will be glad to play V2!!

Classic Cube Game, Still Fun to play. SFX and colours were good. Nice work.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.  I thought it would be appropriate to use the Brakey's Tutorial to help get a solid foundation that I could expand on in the time frame. This was my first game jam so I certainly hope to get a bit more creative on the next one.

Submitted(+1)

Had a good time playing it. Shape changing is a pretty interesting idea. The controls do feel pretty good as controlling in the air is still available. I do agree about others opinion that the levels do feel a little random.

Nice job overall.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing it. I will make sure I take all the input from everyone and get an update out soon.  I'll make sure to spend some extra time on the levels.

Submitted(+1)

This was a lot of fun. I really like the bumps that throw youin the air and the geometry change of the player. Graphics look nice and the gameplay is fun.

Some minor things i would critique: The levels seem to be almost the same at some point. Maybe introduce a new mechanic  later in the game or fewer levels; And sometimes you loose all lives at once when hitting the obstacles, wich seems unfiar, some invisibility frames after loosing a life would help.

But all together nice entry.

Developer(+1)

Thanks. I ended up pulling some things out of the later levels to help with releasing for WebGL, that would have helped break up some of the sameness, but you're 100% right.

The multiple lost lives is the next thing I'll be fixing. That is most certainly unfair.  Thanks for playing.

Submitted(+1)

you just took brackeys cubethon tutorial and expanded it. nice usage of sound effects and musics and aslo nice shaders. but it wasnt very creative. 6 out of 10.

also check out my game.

Developer(+1)

your absolutely correct. This was my first Game Jam and wanted to be sure I can something completable in the time frame. I certainly look forward to getting more creative in the future.

Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Not bad, but the levels seemed like they were mostly randomly filled with obstacles and power-ups, rather than deliberately.

Developer

While they were exactly random, they weren't the most though out placements, for sure.  Also, towards the end of the time frame I had to do some duplicating to make it in time.

Thanks for your feedback, I'll be incorporating changes from all the comments and hopefully releasing V2. 😁

Thanks for playing my game.
