How does the game fit the theme?
Story
--------
Luna, the player character, has a beloved dog named Onyx who is dying after being wounded by shadowy entities. In his final moments, she must risk everything by entering a haunted house filled with those same shadows in order to find his favorite biscuits one last time.

Her choice to face danger for her dog’s sake fits the theme “risk it for the biscuit.”

Gameplay Mechanics
---------------------------
In the game, Luna can find human biscuits underneath furniture that will give her more mana to use spells. Sometimes you can put yourself in precarious situations for these mana biscuits.

3 times per night, an optional summoning circle appears in a random room. You can risk rushing to it to acquire new spells and biscuit buffs.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
The tornado effect for the Snare ability used a material done by Mirza Beig.

For audio, we used sound libraries from Atelier Magicae, including Ancient Horrors and Japanese Horror SFX Vol.1.

For code, we used Odin Inspector, DOTween, and GgCore to be more productive.

How many people worked on the game?

Wow! I'm impressed you managed such a polished game! The music, animations, everything comes together so nicely! I love how smooth the characters movements and magic felt. The sparkling animation for the objects was super pretty and it was fun to go around looking for more biscuits. I like how the shadows don't appear right away which gives you time to become familiar with the controls and environment. Very well done!

This was fun!! Reminds me of DST2 and I really appreciate the nuances of the game balancing w.r.t rewards and risk. I can easily this expanding to a full game, but one thing that rlly annoyed me is that it rlly does feel like i should be able to rotate furniture after lifting it up!!
But otherwise it was a fun 'reverse' brotato.

Amazing game! Immersive, good gameplay, excellent audio and graphics. If more levels and different enemy types are added in the future, it could become a huge game! I really enjoyed it.

Developer

Thanks so much for the kind feedback! We are strongly considering building the game further after the jam, so really appreciate you saying that.

Best of luck with your game as well!

Such a nice and unique game! I love the idea, atmosphere and visuals. Great job! :D

Very atmospheric and challenging. LOVE the art-style, it's so cut and at the same time eerie. Will be returning for seconds.

Oh, one thing the shadows occasionally get stuck on stuff besides the spells, but it actually made the game a little easier so I can't really complain. Still didn't beat it though :P

Developer

I'm glad you really liked it! And yes, the furniture around the house can get shadows stuck a bit, just like some spells can.  We failed to have a tutorial to display the levitation spell you start off with. Did you use the levitation spell to move furniture around to slow the shadows down?

Submitted(+1)

Yeah I did, but it didn’t quite work. I will try again tomorrow morning.
Cheers

The theme is super well integrated here!

The eerie atmosphere gives it a very 'high stakes' feel to the mechanics! I got scared of the shadows running after me, haha! Love that the furniture slows them down! Me being a bad skill player have put myself into some corners more often than I would want to, hahaha! It's interesting how 'realistic' that would feel in real life.. I would also barricade myself if somethings were chasing me! haha

The spells and power ups were super cool and useful too! it's a tough decision which one to get first... I like the mana regen, but the slows/stops are super useful for a start!

Great job on the art as well ! the decision to go B&W was spot on for the mood!

Great submission! loved it! Would love to see fleshed out as a full game! 💪💪😊✨⚡

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for checking it out!!

The way you played the game seems like the way I typically do (I tend to barricade myself a lot too haha).

Glad you liked the eerie atmosphere.

Hope you enjoyed! Best of luck with the jam :)

Submitted(+1)

Wow, really, wow. I wasn’t ready for those 'things,' (Because I played it without seeing your screenshots, which I’m looking at now while writing this xD) they totally surprised me haha. Really cool!

Submitted(+1)

The best submission I've seen so far. Gorgeous graphics, animations, innovative gameplay - you've delivered a masterpiece. This game definitely has a successful future ahead of it. Best of luck to you, I'll rate the game at maximum in all categories

Developer(+1)

Wow!! Thanks so much for the super kind words. It really made our day. 🙏

We are strongly considering continuing with this game after the jam if we receive positive feedback - so your comment is much appreciated!

We'll also be checking out your game as soon as we get the chance.

Best of luck in the jam!

Straight up I'm giving this game a 5/5! Me being a person that hates horror games I was doubting to try it, but this game is in such a perfect middle spot where anyone can catch on while still being fun. The levitation mechanic is so unique and well done, and having the monsters being inmortal but youre able to slow them down is the extra sauce! It's hard but to the right amount, and its super rewarding when you win it. Good job on every aspect!!

Developer

Wow! Thanks so much for the kind words 🥹It made us really happy.

I'm glad that it's not SO horror-ish that it would deter you from trying.

Really appreciate the feedback on the difficulty of the game. It's good to hear that it was challenging, but just the right amount of challenging.

We'll definitely check out your game shortly as well :)

Best of luck with the jam!

Hi! I enjoyed that a lot, even though I ate dust the first time I played it, but managed to pass it on my second run. My third run was a wreck... haha.

The art work, upgrades, spells and smoothness of the game is fantastic. The added mechanics made the game more strategic and pulled me out of a tough spot, which added to the thrill factor. The levitation +1 power is a must for any player, made running away a lot faster and smoother.

On the other hand, I felt like the music fell short for the game, definitely could improve on that aspect in order to stimulate the all senses, but that might just me being a musician. If you plan on expanding the game and idea might be making some shadows more difficult so that the players focus spells on those in order to deep dive more on the strategy aspect.

Anyways, it was a great experience and one of the most enjoyable games I've played in the jam so far!

Developer

Hey!

I'm really glad you enjoyed the gameplay and that the mechanics added to the thrill factor. Good to know that you enjoyed the strategic aspect.

Also, thanks for providing feedback on the audio. I also think its our biggest weakness, and having someone validate it is helpful - haha.

Thanks so much for the kind words. Super appreciative of the feedback!

Best of luck to your team and the game :)

Amazing game, loved the ambiance created by the visuals and audio.

Submitted(+1)

I loved the game , so cute i just needed this game <3

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much, we appreciate it! We played your game and walking across a street in your game was arguably a more stressful situation than Luna trapped inside the house with shadows lol. Thanks for playing! :)

Submitted(+1)

The art felt really connected to the gameplay and gave me that constant feeling of being chased, which I loved. Unlocking new special powers to slow down the shadows was super satisfying, and it added a nice layer of strategy. I think having a bit more of a tutorial would help new players get into it faster, but overall I really enjoyed the experience!

Submitted

Really incredible job. Especially love all of the art and the page for the game was made super well.

Submitted

Not sure about how the game fit the theme, but the art style is great. The sound is really good, but I don't think it fit a lot with the art style. Great game.

Submitted(+1)

I loved the design for this game, some audio would've made it even better

Submitted

There is no Sound but the Visuals are really impressive 😍

Submitted(+1)

The idea is great the art is cute but the lack of sound is annoying, also the slow is super spamable, so it's not super fun.

I do hope you guys keep on working on it, because I see the potencial for a great game in there.

Developer

Hey, thanks so much for the feedback!

We are strongly considering continuing with the game, so we're super appreciative of any and all feedback 🙏🏼. Really appreciate you letting us know about how spammable the slow is, since we want to make sure the game feels balanced.

We fixed our game breaking sound bug and some other minor bugs if you have a chance to check it out again.

Anyway, thanks so much! And best of luck to you with the jam.

Submitted(+1)

Great game!

Oh man where do I start! The art is gorgeous! The gameplay is well made! and the idea is so unique!

Things I liked:

The art, I really LOVE the art! This art style is one of my favorite. The black and white style fits well with the sad story of the game.

The many abilities that allow for different play styles and replayablity.

The Telekinesis ability, because its cool as hell!

Things I disliked:

The lack of sound. I really was disappointed that there are no sounds , simple SFX and ambient sound would have made the game more immersive.

The game is too short. As soon as things started getting more fun the game ended, I know its because the time limit so I guess this is to much to ask for.

Addition notes:

There was a bug that i encountered once while using telekinesis that made me unable to put the things I'm holding down until my mana goes 0.

It would be cool if I could rotate object when using telekinesisl.

Did I mention that I love the art?

I hope you continue working on this game!

Developer(+1)

Hey 3anter,

Really appreciate you taking the time to play our game and write such a thoughtful review! Super happy you liked the art and abilities!

Unfortunately, we had a bug that broke our sound and couldn't get it in before the jam deadline :(

Depending on the feedback we get, we may polish it up a bit more.

Thanks again 🙏🏼

Submitted

Damn , that must suck!

Ask a moderator if you can update the game to fix that bug , since it might be considered game breaking you may get the permission to do so.

Developer(+1)

Hey! We got super lucky and noticed that Brackey's had a 48-hour bug fix period, so we were able to fix  the audio breaking bug!

If you have time, feel free to check it out again and let us know your thoughts.

Hope all is well, and best of luck on your entry as well!

Submitted

I thought you already knew that 😅 congrats nevertheless.

I have played the game again and its so much better now!

I have also noticed somethings that I didn't notice in my first playthrough , here are some:

* There are snacks/boosts hidden under some furniture , which is a nice touch and I like it.

* When the game starts the timer don't start until the player gets to the first magic circle , I abused this system to collect every boost in the map , you might want to fix that :)

* It seems that there is a bug in the left-click in general (it could be because of my shitty mouse so you might have to verify it :) ) , which made it unresponsive and caused me to loose a couple of runs. Sometimes the left-click doesn't respond quickly and sometimes it doesn't work at all.

* If you use Telekinesis and move the object to a place where you cant put it down you can continue using telekinesis even if your mana go 0 until you move the object to a place where you can put it down.

btw are you planning on continuing working on this game?

Developer(+1)

Haha, we didn't notice the 48 hours at first, lol 😭

Thanks so much for playing it again and such amazing feedback! We are strongly considering continuing this game and maybe making it commercial - if we get positive feedback from players and think it's worthwhile to pursue.

  1. Glad you like the hidden snacks/biscuits!
  2. Picking up the biscuits under furniture only replenishes your magic (mana). So if you're already at 100% magic, there isn't a benefit to picking it up. However, you CAN move furniture around before getting to the magic circle -  which can be abused. The long-term idea is to have the player only have 1 minute of preparation before Dusk (shadows spawn).
  3. We haven't seen unresponsiveness in left-clicking YET, so not sure what happened there. But REALLY appreciate you bringing it up so we can be on the look out (in case it wasn't your mouse).
  4. Thanks for letting us know about the Telekinesis bug, where you can't put it down!! Haha, that can be abused and we should fix it.

I like the game.

Good job
