This is actually quite nice! Pretty sure I've never seen a room escape like this, so I am more than thrilled. The graphics, especially that Windows 98 style hit me the most, as that was pretty much my childhood using a computer. The puzzle is also quite well designed with quite a lot of traps if you aren't paying attention. Overall, this is very nice and I do like it a lot! I do think the game has a lot of text, and you clearly spend a lot of time writing all of those, but I end up not reading all of them and just merely relying upon the escape note you provided. Thank god the notes don't reset when you retry the game.
For a bit of criticism, I'd really want to change the settings after you start the game, especially the mouse sensitivity settings. I myself can get dizzy very easily and would always prefer a slower mouse sensitivity. It's always good to be able to change that during the entirety of the game, as you really need testing via gameplay to select the best sensitivity. I'd also say the game relies too much on memorisation, and as a person who is bad at remembering things, I need to play the game a second time to remember where the security room is. Don't know how to solve this though to be honest, as this is one of the core mechanics of the game. Hmmm...
Anyway, with all that said, this is still a great entry! Well
First of all, thank you SO MUCH for the detailed and comprehensive feedback and constructive criticism, and taking the time to write it down, it's greatly appreciated!
To address a few of the things you said:
We knew that this game wouldn't be for everyone, it relies heavily on text to convey its purpose and to be able to find clue. That's why we added the automatic note taking, to ease people into it, so that you could technically click everywhere without reading and just read the final escape plan at then end. But for the persons mad enough to read the entire thing, we had fun hiding jokes and humour across all the texts.
You can change the settings during gameplay, you just have to do it through the computer, the options menu is inside the "Start" menu. We knew that putting it here would mean no options changing once you left the room and make a run for your life but that's how the game is done.
The game is also meant to be played multiple times, maybe you die on your first attempts, but you learn more knowledge that you can use for your next try. We tried not to make death a punishment, but a part of the game (hence why you keep your clues even through death)
But we understand where your gripes came from, we knew them, that they were part of this game, every game should not appeal to every single person :)
We still hope you had some fun discovering the world we created :)
To complete the other answer, we tried to prevent relying too much on memorization with the colored lines on the floor: the security room is conveniently placed right next to the entrance of the conference room, which can be found by following the orange line. We wanted the player to realize "oh, well I just need to always follow the orange lines to grab all the items", but that was maybe a bit too hard to convey ^^'.
We'll try to be more careful about that for our next games, thank you again for your comprehensive review =)
Nice escape room puzzle, that truly immerses you in its retro, computer-driven world. The attention to detail in the interface - navigating through files, emails, and chat logs - is remarkable. Art and sound design work together to create an atmosphere that’s both tense and engaging. Overall, it's an inventive and polished entry!
Thank you very much for your nice comment! We tried to create a coherent experience for the player, so it's always nice to know that it's appreciated!
This is so in depth! The visual and sound design is so crisp, I loved navigating the desktop.
Thank you! We're glad you liked your experience with our game :)
ヽ(°〇°)ノ RUUUUN~
I enjoyed the fact that as you read through the chats, you are slowly unfolding the mystery. Dang that twist at the end, though. Now, I'm glad I failed the first few tries (I even went to -4 floor!)
Though short, this was well thought out and incredibly enjoyable. The details of the OS interface brought me back to my childhood. (I just read your reply to the comment below. LOL!) *clear throat* I retract my statement. This is the first time I have ever seen such marvelous user interface.
I'm glad you added the Mouse Sensitivity option. When I first played it, I was stuck walking in circles because I was turning too fast.
Overall, awesome job! Need more games in the Fenetres OS though. Also more French words in the OS would be great ₍𝄐⩌𝄐₎
Okay, first, what the hell? We voted and you just got the award for the best comment, by far, thank you so much, you really made our day! <3
Then, we didn't expect people to actually read for real and try to understand the story, so knowing that you did exactly this, and got the twist at the end is so very cool!
It's somewhat short but there's already a bunch to read and to remember, as far as orienting go, so we didn't want to overwhelm the players with too many information ^^'
Of course, like I said, this OS is an original creation and there is nothing that could look like this, this is brand new user experience, we're glad you enjoyed using it :D
I coded a Minesweeper a little while ago, for fun, and I pondered integrating it inside Fenetres OS but the deadline was the priority and it didn't make the cut :(
More French words for the next iteration of the OS, Fenetres4.20.18, noted!
I gladly accept the award ╰(*´︶`*)╯
But really, you did an amazing job. You should be proud of what your team have achieved in this game jam ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝
A fellow retro Windows enjoyer !
Very nice, detailed, and well polished ! Maybe a bit hard but it's in the spirit of the game I think
Amazing for a 1-week game !
Thank you for the kind review! Although I must say for legal reasons that Fenetres4.20.15 has NOTHING to do with any Windows, any resemblance is purely coincidental :D
Tweaking the difficulty is definitely a hard thing to do, hopefully you still managed to make it out alive!
very nice cutscenes and idea
Thank you!
A very detailed and well-executed puzzle/escape game!
I really enjoyed the inspection mechanics, which involved different types of clue-searching that were cleverly interconnected. It was engaging to switch between cameras, the map, chats, and files while trying to figure out an escape route.
That being said, the computer interaction was particularly well done, both in terms of storytelling and its use of visuals and sound.
Great entry!
Thank you so much for the detailed and lovely feedback you made our day with your praises <3
We knew that this game wouldn't be for everyone, with all the text to read, clues to listen to, deductions to make, but we had a blast linking everything together and then planting everything into the computer, so we're delighted that some people liked it :)
I love the idea of forming your escape plan before executing it, and the computer interface works really well for gathering that information. The escape plan gradually filling in it also done really well. Would be awesome to see a longer version of this where you're having to jump from safe place to safe place with new plans each time.
The visuals and storytelling are also done really well. Stumbling through emails and chat logs works really well for this. Nice job!
Thank you so much for the detailed feedback, we really appreciate it!
We're glad you enjoyed coming up with your escape plan and hope you could make it out in time :D
Interesting idea, having to go from one safe space to another!
WOAH, this was really nice!!! So much content and the computer interface is nice to use. Reallly loved this one, so many funny dialogs and texts, I loved the whole idea, and the whole game was really smooth. It would be amazing if there was a polished up version of this game in the future.
Good job, keep up gamedev!
On behalf of the Fenetres4.20.15 dev team, we appreciate you enjoying using our computer OS, hahaha :D
Thank you very much for the nice review, it warms our heart! We will definitely keep doing gamedev, follow us to see our next jam entries :D
I had fun playing this one! I love the finding clues from computer part and how it looks on the tab clues board. Also I appreciate the effort on doing voice acting on the voice notes not a lot of games do that in jams!
Thank you for your nice review!
We always try to add some voice acting in our game, I think it really adds something to a game, even a small one! (Also, I really enjoy recording some voice lines, hahaha)
Loved the game, I was amazed with how fluid it ran, wasn't choppy at any point. The audio was a bit lacking but otherwise it was a stellar submission. Great job!
Thank you very much! Some parts of the game are a little bit rough around the edges, but we had to make due with the deadline unfortunately :D
Loved the visuals and atmosphere, the computer feels better than my own
hahahaha, thank you so much!
Fenetres4.20.15 is an OS made with love, that's why it feels so good <3
Really enjoyed messing with the virtual computer and the humour bits! This was a well thought out game and I'm glad I played it!
Thank you very much for the review!
As the person who spend basically the entire week creating the computer, I'm very glad you enjoyed messing with it :D
Incredibly tense and immersive! Loved the retro interface, humor, and clever design. A hint system would be helpful, but overall, fantastic work!
Thank you for the praise, good to know the immersion worked on you!
It might not be super visible, but you can open a recap of all the important stuff you've discovered while browsing the computer by pressing the "Tab" key, just letting you know :)
So cool concept! I liked the aspect of preparing and then doing everything as fast as you can a lot!
Enjoyed it very much!
Thank you very much, we're glad you liked it!
Hopefully you made it outside alive :D
Great job man ! loved the details, some humour even the alarm music is great !
Thanks! Nice to see our stupid humour resonates with some people :D
And good job noticing the inclusion of the alarm itself into the music, good ear!
An escape room game is a perfect fit for the theme! The blaring alarm, the intense music, the gas vapor filling the room, you managed to create such an immersive and anxiety inducing atmosphere, awesome job!
Thank you so much for the kind comment!
We tried our best to make an immersive atmosphere so it's good to know at least someone experienced it :)
Nerve-wracking experience! So good! The level design is very good in my opinion.
Thank you for the nice feedback, glad you enjoyed our game!
Man, what a work ! Totally liked the atmosphere of the game, graphics and sounds ! Very good work !!
Thank you very much for the nice feedback :)
I love the concept of this, and I can only imagine the amount of creativity that went into planning out all of the dialogue, very well done!
Thank you very much for your lovely comment, it means a lot to us!
We're glad you enjoyed our little game :)
