How does the game fit the theme?
My game is a survival horror game. You, the player start infront of the T.V. lying unconscious, unaware of what is happening. When you are awake, you try to escape the place, unaware of how things could turn out. My game Sinister Descent keeps the player at unease. Anything could happen but in a sense, the player thinks nothing can go wrong. Hence the theme aligns with my game perfectly.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
The models were readily available at marketplaces like fab and sketchfab so I used the free assets that were available. The whole codebase was written by me utilizing Unreal Engine's blueprint technology.

How many people worked on the game?

Feels like an upgraded P.T!

I do recommend changing the controls, I didn't realize I had a smartphone, I thought the instructions talked about the phone on the desk. Some sound effects are not a perfect loop so when they finish and start again it's loosing the immersion (Like the TV at the start and the girl sound before she disappears and the coffin appears).

Keep it up!

Developer

Yeah I noticed that myself it breaks the immersion, I still need to fix those sounds. But anyways thankyou soo much for the review and feedback. I'll definitely try to upgrade your experience.

Really cool and scary horror game! But (maybe it is meant to be like that):

  • Options button doesn't work in start menu
  • Close phone(Q) not only when you are on the main phone menu
  • On the chest level I got bugged. How do you close preview of the code in chest?
  • When pressing LMB when you are in phone, it unfocuses from phone. The only thing to fix this is to reopen phone.
  • The first time you open instructions, you can't close it with button I
Developer

I wasn't able to figure out the thing why the phone was being unfocused. Thankyou soo much for telling me that. I owe you one and thankyou for taking the time to find all the bugs. Some were left there due to lack of time and I apologize for that. I'll work on the given feedback and fix the game.

Submitted(+1)

You have bug when closing treasure chest code. As I unerstood: there is a statement that if I am pointing on paper it opens/closes. But I accidentally went to the left and opened it at the last moment, and I got bugged at that place :)

Developer

Ooh right it is currently raycasting, I'll change it so that whenever it's in the box collider only then you can pick and drop the paper, that would fix the issue ig.

Submitted

I had another decision :) but yours is good too

Developer

Decision? Could you elaborate

Submitted(+1)

That if a code letter is currently open, don't matter where are you now, you can close it. In your solution (box collider) may happen same thing as before. Example:

  1. I pressed S button (go backwards)
  2. And on last moment I open letter
  3. My position got updated (from 1st step)
  4. And now I'm outside of collider

It may happen rarely, but I was lucky to see that :)

Developer

Hmm, yeah so instead I'll need to maintain a bool to check for it. Got your point.

You did a great job on this one!

Hey ! Your game looked great, but my computer is not so powerful, the game a bit laggy, i think i'm under 20 fps, i have an integrated graphic card, furthermore i have a french layout keyboard so i think i did not had the expected controls. Hope my review will help :), anyway, great job !

Developer

Yeah it definitely helps, I'll try to optimize my game even further and make it playable on lower hardware as well. And I'll also look into the keyboard mapping for other types of keyboards as well. Thankyou for your feedback.

Very scary. but i loved the graphics

Developer

I tried to make it as scary as possible. Thankyou for your feedback.

Very cool Game and Graphics as well!!

Developer

Appreciate your feedback.

Hey! So here are my thoughts on your game. It really reminds me of PT (the similarities are pretty strong), but I like that you added your own personal touch with the phone that's a nice addition! The way you set up a routine to scare the player works really well, and the graphics and audio are solid. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, while making the game, I took a reference from PT to get the best results and then made something of my own. Appreciate your feedback.

Submitted(+1)

That makes sense! PT is a great reference for building tension, and you did a great job adding your own touch. I really enjoyed the experience! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Developer(+1)

You definitely will as I am also a blender artist, I wanna create my own models with facial animations making it 10 times scarier.

Submitted(+1)

Wow, this is going to be cool!

Submitted(+1)

Woah, cool game! The phone gimmick is a really nice addition to not feel lonely in a horror game, I really liked that! I didn't like Selena tho :( she spooked me.

Developer

Yeah no kidding, sometimes she even scared me cause I forgot I had made a jumpscare at that part of the game. Appreciate your feedback.

Submitted(+1)

Really intriguing PT style horror game, good job

Developer(+1)

Tried to resemble it as best as I could.

Submitted(+1)

As someone else said, a pause menu would be great but the game was so great. Glad i could play it !

Developer

I'll definitely work on that. Thankyou for your honest feedback.

Submitted(+1)

It really kept us on the edge of our seats most of the time

Developer

Thankyou kind sir

Submitted(+1)

Oh wow. This thing is really tense and scary. Really appreciate visuals and game also feels smooth. nice work

Developer

I appreciate the feedback, it took me a while to figure out what would scare players the most which turned out to be darkness😊

Submitted(+1)

I can definitely feel the inspiration from PT, really good job. Both the visuals and the audio were excellent! I like the addition of the phone, which adds another level to the puzzles, and the messages from the unknown contact really add to the horror vibe (not to mention the radio). Great job!

Developer(+1)

I really appreciate the feedback. Helps me stay motivated. Thanks a lot.

Submitted(+1)

Loved it :) really nicely done

Submitted(+1)

Another horror game! Awesome. Read through some comments and now i gotta try PT cause this was amazing and if thats what its based off, I'll give it a go

Developer

I am not sure if PT is still available on the PlayStation Store. It's a ps exclusive demo.

Submitted(+1)

THIS WAS AWESOME! the visuals are so cool ^_^

Developer

Thankyou soo much, your feedback is much appreciated.

Submitted(+1)

What a great little experience you created. The atmosphere was pretty perfect. I think if you could have found a smoother sound for the lady it would have been near perfect. Great job fellow horror game dev!

Developer(+1)

Yeah I wasn't really able to find the perfect sound so I had to work with what was available. Appreciate your feedback.

Submitted

Don't be afraid of recording your own. You'd be surprised what you come up with.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I never really tried that. Come to think of it, might actually work with my game.

Submitted(+1)

It cannot be easy to try to do a PT style game in a week and you did a good job! Most of my feedback revolves around wanting to tighten up the cell phone mechanics, like how the text messages should be latest to oldest, not oldest to latest, etc. Otherwise this is a solid slice of a game. I died once and then I was able to escape on my second run ;)

Developer(+1)

Yeah I was facing a lot of issues with the phone mechanics so this is only a test ui, I have to make a lot of improvements to the game. I wanted to make it much longer but this is all I had time for. Thankyou soo much for taking the time to play the game. I appreciate you feedback.

I can't seem to launch the executable in the files due to "Game files required to initialize the global shader library are missing" and can I seem to launch the game from itch. Any idea what's going on?

Developer

Did you extract both parts?

Submitted

Yes I did. Itch doesn't open them, and while the executables are there, they can't be opened due to the errors.

Developer

So like you extracted the part 1 only right, cause part 2 is automatically extracted and then run the Horror game.exe

Submitted

I extracted them both, neither work.

Developer

Use winrar and keep both of the files in a single folder, then extract only part 1 and run HorrorGame.exe.
