How does your game represent Mode?
You can switch between Turbo Mode and BIG MODE!
BIG MODE you can knock back certain smaller enemies.
You're less vulnerable, but slow.
Turbo Mode, you move faster, but can get sent flying by bigger enemies.
Knowing when to switch modes is key to surviving this race!

I think it's a pretty good game, but the controls were a little wanky. Overall, very cool. I like the sprites.
I had a lot of fun playing this game. I liked the challenge of having to race against the other critters. The ramping difficulty was nice as well, it didn't feel too challenging. I did feel like the gameplay was less intuitive in some areas and I was not able to figure out how to beat the big boss. Nice job!
Once I understood it, it was really cool! It feels like a "speedrunable" game, once I got better at some stages it felt really rewarding gliding to the finish line. Thanks for sharing and great job!!
Loved the silly tone! Gameplay was fun and challenging, but some parts were a little unclear. I didn't understand how to beat the final boss :(
Thanks! Sorry if instructions were a bit unclear/lacking. Guess I ran out of time.
The final boss dies when it touches the lava walls just outside of the stage.
There's two ways to do this, one of them being: finish the levels fast enough so you can eat enough food to get bigger than him. That way, you can knock him off the stage.
The other is a secret! Gasp! It's pretty simple though so don't overthink it.
I like the whimsy of this game a lot. The cave could have said "Sorry another bug got to the cave first, you lose, restart" but no, it takes it up a notch, and I liked that. Big respect for solo developing this.
Something about playing as these tiny critters made me want to see this as the first stage in a Spore-style game. The models perfectly straddle the line between cute and nightmarishly disturbing, which is really rare. I liked the "race" mode mechanics where you bully/box out smaller critters, I don't think I've ever played something quite like that before and it was satisfying.
Thanks!
Yeah, the initial idea was: Beast Mode (which is the nickname of a football runningback) and Turbo Mode. Runningbacks are sometimes known for knocking other players down.
But instead of football players, I used underwater animals from zillions of years ago. They can be pretty gross looking. But I made them more funny looking. But I guess some of their creepy traits still show (e.g. the little orange guys' spiny things). They kinda look like bugs.
I thought red lava might have been too eerie. But couldn't find a better colour for hazardous areas, so I stuck with red anyways.
As for the music, I can't help putting in a little bit of eeriness. Spooky!
The lore was: why is all of the world's food inside one cave? Cuz an evil wizard put it there just to see all the animals underwater panic lol.
Lol, I dig the lore. Great job! It's funny you mention Beast Mode, someone made a game in this jam about that which I played, you might want to check it out https://itch.io/jam/bigmode-2023/rate/2423907
Heh. That was fun. Nice take on the mode! Really liked the mechanic with blocking off the other slugs
Awesome work on this game man! I like the switching between big and small and knowing when to do so. Game is simple, yet fun!
Great work on this! It's impressive you did this all on your own, you made a really fun racing game with lovely concepts. I enjoyed having to think fast and switch modes to outpace enemies or knock them away. Also really enjoyed the funky 3D art style.
