I'm an nsfw developer and this needs to stop, please read.

Hello everyone, I'm KiwiState and I make a living developing adult games. What’s been happening on the forums needs to stop.

As we all know, NSFW games have been deindexed, and the amount of hate directed at Itch.io as a result has been overwhelming. Not only are they trying to find a solution to all of this, but they also have to endure the flood of toxic messages people are posting in their chats.

What many don’t realize is that Itch.io is the last stronghold for indie NSFW developers. GameJolt went through something similar in the past — but instead of fighting back, they chose to ban all adult content, and in doing so, avoided the fallout.

Itch.io could easily do the same — wipe out all NSFW content, spare themselves the stress, and protect the SFW games on their platform, which are now also at risk if the payment processors pull their support entirely.

If tomorrow the team at Itch.io decides that standing up for creators who insult and attack them isn’t worth it, many of us — myself included — will be out of a livelihood.

So please, take a breath. This happened very quickly, and sure, their public posts may not have been the most polished, but at least they’re trying. They’re doing something, and that matters.

Itch.io is genuinely the last platform standing. Not even Nutaku or other adult-focused sites bring in the kind of audience Itch.io does — especially for those of us starting from scratch.

That’s all I wanted to say. Please stop the hate, and let’s wait for further updates from Itch.io.

History has shown us that when we try to appease the bigots, the bigots grow bolder. Furthermore...no, itch.io is not the last platform standing, because their actions during this incident have already shown how little they care. I understand that they have to keep the lights on; so do we. I understand that they were given an ultimatum by payment processors; look how they responded. We have seen this exact situation, this cycle of embracing adult content only to turn around and censor it after getting big, play out time and again--Paypal being the most famous instance. It's all well and good to talk about how itch.io is the last bastion of decent people, but they aren't. I cannot do business with someone who could take my money from me at any moment. We absolutely have to make sure they never pull this kind of shit again, and the best way to do that is to make it absolutely clear that this behavior is unacceptable.

Itch.io, Steam among other platforms didn't have any choice.

They had too in order to keep money flowing, that's how a business works; it's not all good times and sunshine here, what did you expect them TO DO IMMEDIATELY? Boycott the Payment Processors? They are the one's giving you your business making sure the money reaches your pocket's!

Make every title in the catalogue free? Dev's can't get paid and noone likes to do this.

Pissed off at the immediate response to BAN every NSFW title? Those game's have been De-Indexed, meaning you can't reach them normally, you just need to reach the webpage it's held which a LOT of people are re-indexing their games to a fourm post already to regain access back. If they wanted to ban those titles, it would been easier to delete them from the catalogue which they didn't! There might be some gone, but once the mess is cleared, you can head back and make one anew + Someone has taken the time to re-index the de-indexed games, or a least a lot of them.

Instead of acting on rage, expecting the world to cow-tow to you for clout and throwing up information, which the article was a nifty read; thanks for that one, is it better to ask than to INSULT and PAUSE FOR ONCE?! Noone wants what's happening and everyone is TRYING to do something new by looking for new solutions? Even make better ones?

Dude... Just chill.

They had a problem shown to them, and instead of sharing the impact, dumped it all on the consumer and creators. The very people who give them their lights in the first place.

It wasn't them against another company whom they owe nothing, it was them against their own 'employees' who they certainly do owe. "Look how they responded" is right.

On the one hand:  Absolutely I agree!   Itch got this basically dropped on them with little to no notice, and did what they had to in order to keep the lights on.   This has been a problem that has been handled by various platforms in the past (Patreon went through somethin' similar a few years back) and Adult Entertainment sites have been taking people's money since the internet existed.  This is a minor, temporary problem that we don't need to freak out about, and I suspect most people won't remember what the big deal was this time next week.

On the OTHER Hand:  This KEEPS HAPPENING.  The number of times payment processors have pulled the rug (or almost pulled the rug) out from a major site, causing its adult content creators to flee or panic, has gotten ridiculous.  People are going to forget this happened in 1-2 weeks, and then some OTHER place is gonna get hit.   And it's gonna keep on getting hit.   Get mad!   Fight the power!   etc. etc.

Agreed in full. Itch made a necessary decision so it and we could live and fight another day.

Already, some games are being re-indexed! My game was just today. Now, if I enable payment options, it becomes de-indexed again, but returns if I make it free again. So, not fully back up again, but this is likely itch taking slow, careful steps towards getting as much as possible functioning again. Even if this is as far as they can go, I could still use my itch page as a marketing platform to direct people who want to support me to a patreon or such.

We need to stay calm, let itch do what it needs to do to survive, and hassle the crap out of Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and Paypal and hopefully get this entire thing reversed entirely.

Itch is not a benevolent party in this endeavour.

Some nsfw games have been re-indexed, even if they can’t accept payment. That means

  1. Itch is steadily working to put as much back to normal as possible or
  2. Itch wants to at least continue to host these games, which theoretically comes to as an expense for them while they’re taking up server space but not being monetized.

I agree 100%.  I've seen a lot of developers say "I will never publish my games on itch again. I'm taking my work elsewhere. I can't forgive this,  You've lost me forever"   etc.

And I get it! I do.  But to me  it comes across as very entitled, dramatic and short-sighted.  I was thrilled when I discovered itch. There is no other site that supports indie adult games.  When people say they'll go elsewhere-- where?...   I know "we don't have a choice" is a bleak and upsetting stance, but itch has been handling the situation well in my opinion and  we truly all need to just be patient and let them create solutions.

Finally some other constructive talk about this matter.

Payment processors are their enemies, if the community as well becomes enemies of Itch, i'd not blame Itch for ditching the whole block of such games.

I'm starting to think that Collective Shout pawns are infiltrated as users in disguise to increase the shitstorm intensity that the users are generating and destroy the platform.

I even heard that there are extremist groups on Steam who are targeting NSFW users/developers with toxic behaviours and review bombing... be wary!
