Description
I used baby’s first DAW (ie Garageband) for all of the tracks, didn’t really modify the instruments much but I used a mix of the instruments provided on desktop vs mobile GB. Apart from that, I mostly improvised the tracks and melodies, but I did try to use instruments that sounded apt and ones with names that were thematically appropriate.

You play as a different star in each level, traveling above some distant horizon. It’s an ambient game about the wonders of the galaxy. Many of the songs use bells to represent the other stars surrounding you in the sky.

Track 1 - Night Sky: You travel across the night sky as centuries pass. As time carries on, you become as vibrant as those around you. Together, you paint the sky in gorgeous hues of purple, pink, green, and blue.

Track 2 - Meteor Shower/Falling Stars: You are part of one of the most spectacular meteor showers the world below has seen in decades. But what they see as beauty is chaos in the midst. Stars are falling all around you, as if some evil force is clawing at you from the heavens. Fire rains down; this must be hell. You try to survive, and as quickly as the storm began, it draws to a harsh close. The rest of sky pretends as though nothing happened, and you find yourself doing the same. But you are grateful. Perhaps even stars can have their prayers answered.

Track 3 - Her Wish: You are a star receiving a girl’s wish. She stands below on the hospital balcony. Her thoughts become yours and you begin to see her mind as if it were your own. Her emotions spring up around you—she wishes she could be a star, as beautiful and carefree as the night sky. But she is bound by the anxiety of her sole living relative, sick in bed in the room behind her. The beeps of the machines pull her away from you, back into reality, and you feel as much loss as she does. People don’t believe in wishes anymore. They don’t believe in you. But that makes you shine brighter. You will bring this girl the joy and freedom she desires, no matter what she thinks she’ll lose.

Track 4 - Blackhole: A blackhole. An eater of worlds. In the radius of its darkness, there is no escape, only the inevitable wait for whatever comes next. Before long, the blackhole swallows you. Inside, it is like a circus. Nothing is right, nothing is wrong: the concepts don’t exist here. Elongated stars stretch past you into the eternal unknown.

Track 5 - Rebirth: You are nearing the end of your centuries-long life. Every end is a new beginning. As the fire that composes you burns out, a new fire is ready to start deep down inside.

Track 6 - Meteor Shower (Extended): The original length of track 2, included as a bonus track that would be unlocked after the end of the game.

Message from the artist:
So…this is my first OST Comp Jam! I’ve been listening to the past ones for a while and had to give it a shot. I tried making a song a day so I am winded but it was all worth it! I love making music and I’ve been making soundtracks privately for the past year or two, so it’s nice to finally put something public. Thank you to Lone Rabbit for hosting this jam, and to everyone who participated in past jams, you all probably inspired me in one way or another!

Theme:

Wish upon a star
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
Each one of my tracks corresponds with a different role that stars play, whether in our stories or the grander scheme of the universe. Track 3 is perhaps the most on-the-nose track in corresponding with this theme; however, tracks 1 and 2 also draw inspiration directly from the picture theme.

Great job! I really enjoyed the more relaxed tracks, especially Her Wish, although Meteor Shower/Falling Stars and Blackhole did a great job creating a specific tense vibe to contrast it. Well done overall!

Thank you!  ☺️

Night Sky: The long synths seem to represent passage of time while the transient bells are other stars that pass like blips on a radar. The growth of this track is impressive and the volume increase makes me imagine more and more color filling the sky. This is a great ambient track!

Meteor Shower/Falling Stars: I think this is a very intriguing take on meteor showers. These arpeggios are very interesting and spacey. You have some great intensity and anxiety-provoking sections that are perfect for a tense moment where fire is raining from the sky. I really like that the long synths glide down which mimics stars falling down from the sky.

Her Wish: This is another nice ambient piece. The pads you use just envelope me and sweep me away into the sky. Creative use of the beeping sounds to conclude the piece and to tell your story aurally.

Blackhole: The low growling noise you use makes me imagine an enormous object. Coupling this with the calming synths seems to make the blackhole feel like a gentle giant. This is a cool transition into the blackhole - using the 3/4 time to convey the circus version of the theme is really creative.

Rebirth: The reverse synth sounds make me think of what you wrote: “every end is a new beginning”. Musically, using reverse sounds make the end the actual beginning, and using these in this way is a very creative technique to musically describe “rebirth”. This is very cool! I’m very glad you decided to share your music with this community and I thank you for sharing! Great work!

Thank you so much! Track-by-track feedback is so great and I'm glad you took the time to be so detailed :)

I don't make a lot of 3/4 songs so, as well as being to depict how unsettling and crazy it is inside of the blackhole, I also used that time sig to try something new! Happy it turned out well ^^

First off, awesome work and congrats on your first Jam submission! This OST is really good work and I find each track works very well together. You have an awesome knack for story telling, and I enjoyed listening to each of these tracks.

Night Sky sets the atmosphere of the game, i love the gentle synth that comes in and continues to build until the drums towards the end. It really helps convey the message of time passing and the star growing and changing to be more vibrant!

Meteor shower/falling stars might be one of my favorites. The wooshing/waves? sound that you use in the beginning adds a really cool element to this one.

Her wish is actually a really awesome part when combined with your story, and the beeping at the end is awesome. Nice working incorporating your story telling into the music, I think that can be a difficult task to achieve with game audio. But this is a perfect example of good story telling through audio.

Blackhole the Bass synth? reverb i feel fits the inside of a blackhole, and the cymbals? That are wooshing past are a nice touch, again a really powerful show of storytelling through music.

Rebirth is a really cool wrap up to this story of a stars life/journey. What is the buzzing sound/instrument that you used that starts right around 1.23? I like it! And when it fades of at the end and pans back and forth is really cool,

The Full length version of Meteor shower is awesome as well! I guess I lied saying meteor shower is my favorite, I like the extended version! The extra part with the guitar? at 1.42 is really chill, but then the change up at 2.16 when the drums come on, I love this part with the synth and was grooving along with it :D

Thank you for submitting and sharing this one, i loved it and would love to see a game like this made! Sorry for so many question marks and mistakes identifying instruments ha I'm not so great at that yet:p

Developer

Thanks so much, your feedback means a lot!! And lol no worries about the instruments thing, I don't memorize what half of them are since I mostly just chose ones that sounded right. Most of the instruments are different kinds of synths that Garageband offers by default, with some effects added to them (but not much because mastering is confusing). So the waves sound in Meteor Shower/Falling Stars, for example, is a synth that Garageband calls "Droplets" and that buzzing in Rebirth is a synth called "Chop It Up" which is one I found when I was working on a different track that I wanted to be a tribute to Portal 2 (I might come back to that track). The guitar sound I believe is actually some kind of bells synth called "Gentle Bells"? Which is weird because it totally does sound like a guitar. And you were pretty much right about the sounds in Blackhole!

I'm glad I did a good job conveying the story through the audio, I usually always make music with a theme or story in mind so this jam was right up my alley honestly! I guess I just really wanted the songs to feel like the story, especially with Her Wish, I wanted it to be able to draw the listeners in so that the beeps at the end would sort of startle you out of that trance (like it does to the character in the story).

As far as an actual  game goes...I have zero programming skills, so much like this jam's theme, you'll have to just keep wishing upon a star 😂

Beautiful atmosphere. Cool arpeggios in Meteor Shower/Falling Stars! Night Sky was definitely my favorite, the ambience was so nice. Great work!

Thank you :D

Glad you quit your lurking to join us this time :)

You have a great sense of pacing and musicality, especially considering you improved a lot of this. I love your bendy synths and arpeggios, and you kept me interested throughout the whole soundtrack! The bonus track is great!

Developer

lol thank you so much! That bonus track was such a challenge 😭 and I was worried some people might end up just skipping it once they saw it was just a longer version of track 2, but I’m glad that wasn’t the case! Also I’m happy the music kept you interested, I tried pretty hard to make sure none of the songs felt boring and stagnant :)

Pssst, kid. You want to space?
I really like the atm :D Well done :)

Developer

Thanks 😂

That was such a trip into space! While reading I could definitely see myself as the stars you describe for each track, very good immersion :)

Thank you for posting one of these soundtrack that gives powerful cinematic views especially when you read the context for it. Black hole was mesmerizing in that way!

Honestly, this is not the type of things I'm fond of, but still I was there with the stars from beginning to end, very good job and thank you for this!

Developer

I’m glad you ended up enjoying it :)

Great job! I really like your idea of playing as a different star in each level. I think your music certainly captures the feeling and story you described for each star. Nice work!

Thank you <3

This was great!  Love the synth choices in this, they really create interesting textures.  I was pleasantly surprised to read that this was a lot of stock garage band stuff, you were able to get a lot of mileage out of it.  The heartrate monitor at the end of Her Wish was a great touch, and I love the dissonance in Blackhole, as well as that very slight warm detune in Rebirth.  overall, very good work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you :) I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, especially with this being my first jam!

I love how diverse each level sounds! especially the beeping sounds at the end of Her wish really adds so much intensity in a very effective way, what a great idea! Great job!

Thank you! :)

This is really neat. Great use of textures, the whole thing feels very nostalgic. Great job!

Thank you <3 I’m a fan of your music in these jams, Comfort of Solitude is one of my favorites, so I’m happy you enjoyed my work ^^

Awesome! This kind of gritty lo-fi ambience is totally my jam, and I like how you keep the tracks really varied and non-repetitive but at the same time each of them has a distinct quality/personality to it. They fit their descriptions well. I'd love to play a game with this soundtrack!

Also, kudos for using "default" instruments. I feel that often that kind of decision cuts down the time wasted looking for just the "right" sound, and lets you focus more on composition and being creative instead. Also the resulting sound is more cohesive as a result.

Developer(+1)

Thank you!! ^^ I don't really know how to use like, soundfonts and stuff with my current DAW so I usually just try to be creative with what I've got :)

Nigh Sky - a really intense song. It leaves the impression it's time to start the game.

Meteor Shower/Falling stars  - Love the water effect mix with the chimes, and leaves me even more curious about how the celestial and water elements might mix on this.

Her Wish - I want to sit and meditate with this song. I imagine a cut scene with "her" and  very curious liminal realm?

Blackhole - Definitely gives a strong sense of dissonance. But also, felt a little week for the dissonance. Maybe a little slow? (Still really good!)

Rebirth - Nice! Sounded more like a landscape than a song. I heard fluorescent lights... It was fun.

Bonus Track - My favorite of all of them. A really rich sound.

Developer

Ah yes, I did try to add some effects on Blackhole like changing the tempo or muffling it a bit, but I couldn't figure out how to make it flow naturally so I ended up trying to make it kind of trippy instead.

Thank you for listening!

Very impressive! The 'space' and 'stars' feel are perfect here! Meteor Shower/Falling Stars is withoua doubt my favorite here. You did a great job, congrats!

Developer

Thank you :) tbh that song was probably the hardest one for me to make, I'm glad my efforts paid off!

Thoughtful use of different stars as your starting points for each track! Also, enjoyed that each theme had a second half, so to call it, to provide some variation to the ambient vibe. Feel like often times this kind of music rides top long on one motif, so thought that was a good choice on your part!

Developer

Thank you! ^^

You really nailed the spacey feel throughout!

Thank you! Once I started with it, it was like I couldn't stop :)
