The game is still a bit hard and the difficulty curve hits hard fast. I wish the upgrades were a bit more interesting and useful like I sometimes just feel I am not getting better dice. I keep getting one-shotted because I didn't have a chance to get better dice. The game has a great style and is fun but just needs some balance I feel.

did I really just get one shot by the boss when I had 25hp with shield

This isn't a hate comment btw, just me realizing I need to git gud

It is a hard boss, you need to save some honey dices for that moment, but once you reach the boss several times, you know how to play around her rage status. That attack can deal 20-26 damage, so you got a bit unlucky there also x)

I usually don't like turn-based combat games, so I am surprised how much fun I had with this game

Thank you for the comment! Glad you liked it :)

Amazing Game I love it

Thank you! ^^

this game is to good to only be made in 1 week

The original concept was made in a week, however, we've added already 3 patches to fix and add new things, so the current game actually has a lot more time than just that first week x)

I thought this game was super fun! I've never been into turn-based games aside from a few from when I was younger but this game is actually a lot of fun! If you like dice, dungeon crawling, turn-based games, and a badass frog with a sword you're probably going to enjoy Die in the Dungeon! Also the enemies are challenging but not too challenging where you're going to rip your hair out!

This is freaking awesome!
Finally made it to the end, after 5-6 days of playing.

Silver hollow boost + gold hollow heal (MIRACLE) made the run for me!

I have a couple of suggestions for dice types!

trample - after dealing overkill damage to one enemy, spills the rest of damage on the following enemy
spread - deals the same amount of damage to all enemies

end

(+1)

Addictiv!

I've been going back and replaying this game to relax. I really love the art and the different dice rules (hollow dice, etc). Thank you so much for making this! <3

I eventually won the game, and was really happy I was able to make it to the end:

(1 edit) (+1)

recommendations for devs:

frist: continue to do more awesome stuff like this.

second: perhaps different characters with different boards

third: more amazing soundtracks that should be selectable

fourth: bigger numbers on dice

(edit: meant like bigger dice like 8 sided 16 sided 20 sided yknow)

fifth: Keep up the awesome work!

(+1)

yeah characters would be really fun maybe with different abilities or starting decks as well I also think varied bosses would be fun

very nice

great game super fun and love the art style it reminds me of that one steven universe episode with the frog and bunny (I think it was called garnets universe) and that is one of my fav. episode. but i do think the music could use a little tweaking because it feels a little stall after a while

(+4)

Everything is just perfect!

This game is just, amazing, I would love some better music though.

Man, I was lucky to have found this. This is a lovely game, but extremely difficult. Sometimes too much. The fact that enemies attacks are totally random and you have almost no way to gauge them is super frustrating. Like why do they attack some many times :<< I am kind of venting.

The game is very promising and very fun as it is. I wish I could get better and better and I know I can but I also know I need RNG blessing first to allow it.
After 2 days, I did get better. I'd say the game is really well tweaked for the amount of content it has. Provides challenge for a bunch of runs and later on can still get you down if you are unlucky. All in all mechanically the only issue for me would be that it's really difficult to know what an opponent will do. The only opponent I feel like I could almost always read is the boss, though her first attack is without telegraphing I think which can take you off guard.

The base mechanic of placing dice to attack is super satisfying and something worth building on.

I made my own soundtrack in ableton lol

Is it a demo-playtest version for a potential full published game ?
If it's the case I would totally love to buy it on launch (or work on it!), I had a lot of fun playing for an hour and it has a great potential!

[REPOST]

I can't reach the boss since I Lose On Floor 19 SO here are some challenges

Easy:

1. Don't Lose

2. Always Remove A Die If Possible

3. Don't Get Above 20 Dice

3.5. No Mirror Dice

4. Die

5. Stay At Max Health Before Ending A Battle

Normal:

6. Always Get A New Die

7. Don't Upgrade Any Dice

8. No Heal Dice Allowed

8.5. Don't Let Your Health Reach 5 Or Below

9. Use A Number Randomizer (1,2,3) At The End Of Each Battle And For The Number You Land On You Must Do That Action (1 is The Left Option 2 Is The Right Option And 3 Is Skip)

10. No Health Upgrade Allowed

11. No Sliver Dice Allowed (gold dice is allowed)

Hard:

12. No Gold Dice Allowed (sliver dice is allowed)

13. Don't Let Your Health Go To 10 Or Below

14. No Blue Dice Allowed

15. No Purple Dice Allowed

16. You Can't Remove Dice

V. Hard:

17. Don't Let Your Health Go To 15 Or Below

18. You Can Only Place 2 Dice (hollow dice can be played still even if you already have 2 dice on the action board)

19. No New Dice Allowed

20. No Sliver AND Gold Dice (Normal Dice Can Be Used Still)

Impossible (if you can beat one of these challenges I will grant anything you want no matter what it is):

9+10. Don't Let Your Health Go To 19 Or Below

22. No Red Dice

23. No hit challenge

24. One Die Only On The Action Board

25. Only Use One Type Of Dice

So fun game! I love it.

A bug is there. When choose "power up one dice" as upgrade, I click bag then go next level without upgrade.

I really enjoyed this game.

Tips for anyone struggling, this should work consistently:

Upgrade priorities:

- Upgrade 1 red and 1 blue to gold to make early/mid easier

- Remove starter red/purp/red/purp/blue in that order. Be careful not to remove dice after you have this handled or you can throw a run.

- If you are below floor 8, take healing over new dice. Never take a new dice before floor 8, they are always stinky and make you weaker.

- After ~12 you want to start fishing for some really good new dice. Anything Hollow/Heavy is better than anything not hollow/heavy. Just once good dice can carry a run.

- Upgrading random stuff is usually good, but I prefer silver purples to gold purples, as 3 range can be awkward to make work. They are better, you just don't get as much value as you do from other upgrades IMO

Combat tips:

- Blue is most important, unless you can finish off an enemy.

- Try to save a green for the end of a fight when you have plenty of armor, then hit it with all purples for max value. Try to end every fight with full health.

Easier said than done in many ways lol. Gotta take what you're given. I guess I have the absolute worst luck. I'm usually upgrading purples before anything and removing weak reds/blues later but I've found if you don't get a mirror die before floor 10 just give up and try again, you ain't getting anywhere. Mirror die essential.

I wouldn't say Mirror dice are essential, especially if you have enough other decent dice, but they make things a lot easier, especially if you score (and upgrade) a hollow Mirror. (And more fun—a Mirror die and a 2-3* Boost enable a bunch of simple yet satisfyingly potent combos.)

There's so many complicated situations especially with regards to dealing with the healing moths and shield beetles. And if you get a beetle and moth both, especially with another mob, forget about it. So yeah, sometimes blue is most important, sometimes not...

When two purple hooded 2-hit mobs are at you at once, you could have the tighest deck in the world all gold, but without a mirror die, and without killing at least one by your second turn, you will die, end of story.

Basically my strategy. But I'd like to add a few notes:

* Know your enemy! You don't need a detailed codex of every attack every enemy can do, but knowing their general damage range and (of course) their special abilities is extremely helpful—in particular, it lets you determine when to pile on more Block dice to protect your precious HP and when to start attacking.

* Prioritize high-damage targets, unless they're way tankier than the little mooks (e.g. a blocking-beetle with a couple basic flies). The idea is to minimize the damage you take over the course of the fight; this rule of thumb does that pretty well.

* It's technically possible to get great dice on low floors—I've had The Holy (6*6 Attack die) below floor 5 a couple of times. But it's extremely rare—I try to avoid it.

* Mirror dice can be incredible, especially when paired with a 2* Boost.

* Prioritize upgrading Heavy dice, if you have them. Upgraded Heavy dice not only have a bigger effect when you play them, but stick around longer.

* If you get a purple fly, red archer, and axe beetle at once, don't be ashamed when you lose.

tried to take a screenshot of the boss on one health and accidently closed the tab lol

(+1)

also this game got a mini update to the animations and ui

(2 edits)

I have played this game for 10's of hours and won at least 50 times ( about 3/4s of my runs ) once you learn the strategy it's super easy. I think it would be cool to have different characters with different effects for example: all shield attempts get +1 and starting "decks" for example one that starts with honey blocks and royal honey spaces. I also think it needs easier and harder difficulties.

what is going on with the upgrade screen art?

I see there was a stealth update that has made the game SIGNIFICANTLY harder and I must express my extreme and complete frustration with it now. Roll it back. That or I just completely suck ASS  and the game's always been too easy before, but I was at least able to reach the boss twice previously and regularly get to the 15th+ floors. Never beat the boss, got close once, but now? Forget it. And I've played this dozens and dozens, probably in the hundreds, I never counted, of times. It's beyond frustrating now and I won't be playing it anymore. Can't even get to floor 10 regularly without getting easily wiped out by big groups of mobs.

Very fun game, though, at least it used to be, that could make real money, especially if the difficulty scaling were better and there were mechanics for increasing the energy pool at some point and more robust and specific dice upgrades.

Just my humble opinion. I get roguelikes are supposed to be hard but there's gotta be a limit or at least something more satisfying for us who suck and do 20 runs in a row without getting past the 10thish floor.

We have gotten comments of the game being hard but never to this level, I don't recall the programmers adding a stealth update like that recently, what group of monsters are you encountering near the 10th floor that are finishing your game?

I wouldn't worry too much about one persons experience, I picked the game up today and barely scraped my way to the boss on my first run, had a challenging few runs, then won on my 6th run after getting a good understanding of when to pick which upgrades.

Extremely fun few hours. Kudos to your team.

If you notice, the awards at the end of the round, the graphic changed. And now, there are larger groups of mobs much earlier, and encounters of the purple flies much earlier. The hooded 2 hit mobs come in bigger groups earlier than they ever did. Now at and above level 10 the mob groups of 3 are killing me regularly and I'm seeing them on nearly every floor where as before it wasn't quite as bad.

Unless somehow I am just getting the absolute shittiest luck of all time. I don't think so though, I've played through this many many many times.

I enjoy the game as a concept but I'm just not having any fun with it anymore. At this point it's just addiction cause I feel like a stupid dipshit that I can't get this and apparently everyone else on the planet can.

Good game, but it could some explaining of who what how. I do like being treated as an adult who can figure out mechanics on his own, it doesnt have to be all coddly like handheld tutorials. Just some more mouse over texts here and there.

The honey and royal spot mechanic cost me the run the first time I got to the queen because I had no idea what to do with the marked spots. They could use a mouse over text.

When chooses dice, it would be nice if it also told you what the things like 'glass' and 'heavy' mean.

And like someone else suggested, when you hover over an enemy it could give you some information about their abilities and damage/heal range for example. Or maybe just a 'warrior ant, deals low damage' fluff text. 'Glowing moth, strong healer'.

Actually, when choosing a new die, there are little icons you can hover over that show the special abilities (albeit, they are hard to notice).

Definitely agree with the enemy info suggestion. There's already a bunch of randomness/mystery involved with your own dice, so it'd be nice to make everything else more clear/reliable.

Good game, but enemy abilities are a bit confusing when haven't played the game for a long time. Overall, you need some knowledge of the game, a good strategy and decent RNG to be able to win this game.

(+1)

Which enemy ability are you having trouble with? We can use some feedback :)

And thanks for the comment!

I am a bit confused on the queen bee's abilities., mainly the enraged mode that does +30dmg.

I would also appreciate there was a way to see detailed description on each enemy and their abilities (Like some monster library that gives information on enemies that you have fought/killed and not before then.)  Something like that would be highly appreciated by me and more players.

I love the art and music of the game ! It's so charming, and though I haven't gotten to the end, yet, the concept and gameplay are (chefs kiss) .

I do have a question about the Mac build, though . Whenever I try to open it I get a message saying I don't have permission to the application . I've tried terminal commands like 'chmod +x' and 'chmod 755' along with 'sudo' but it still denies me access . Would you be able to help ?

I'm really sorry for asking here, but besides this, your game is hands down awesome and I can't wait to see where you take it next ! Cheers !

Hmm, what OS version are you using? Big Sur (11) by any chance?

Seems like I might be able to solve this, but the fix will probably take a while to be released, thanks for the heads up tho!

Yes . I'm currently using Big Sur 11.6.1, if that is any different from 11 in general . I look forward to the update, so thank you for your response ! In the meantime,  I must also give my thanks to the invention of the 'Miracle' die for making my runs possible, LOL . Thanks again !

Hello there ! Just a follow up to my issue on Mac, I actually resolved it and got it working . I just wanted to share with you how, if you or anyone else wanted to know :

  1. Download the Mac build of the game, I downloaded mine to the 'Downloads' section of my computer
  2. Open the Die in the Dungeon folder, you should see an application of the same name with a little froggy icon
  3. Right click this application and select "Show package contents"
  4. Open up the folder "Contents" that then appears
  5. Open up the folder called "MacOS", you should see a file called 'Die in the Dungeon' with the type listed as 'Document' or with a page-looking icon
  6. Leave the Finder page open for now, you'll need it later
  7. Launch the Terminal app, you can find it when you open your Launchpad and search for 'Terminal'
  8. In the terminal type "chmod +x " making sure to remove the quotes but do not hit enter yet
  9. Drag and drop the document file in step 5 from Finder into Terminal, it should show the pathing of the file
    1. It should look something like: /Users/[your computer name]/[wherever you downloaded the file]/Die\ in\ the\ Dungeon\ 1.3.1\ \[MAC\]/Die\ in\ the\ Dungeon\ 1.3.1\ \[MAC\].app/Contents/MacOS/Die\ in\ the\ Dungeon
  1. Hit enter then quit Terminal

Quick FYI for anyone else "chmod +x" basically means to make the file executable meaning the Mac can actually run the code the file contained . So now, head back to 'Downloads' on Finder and try opening Die in the Dungeon there . Hope that helps someone, have a nice week !

Been playing for a surprising number of hours, and I've beaten the Queen Bee 3 times! Here's my best run:

Die in the Dungeon - Petarus' Record

Current Strategy:

  • Upgrade the boost die, then attack die, then block die to gold.
  • Destroy as many dice as possible, leaving only those 3 + heal die.
  • Increase health if both Upgrade and Destroy are unavailable.
  • Around level 10, start adding more dice and upgrading them.
  • Prioritize hollow dice. Never choose glass dice.
  • Around level 17, destroy the heal die.

Good job! 💪🐸

Lovely comment, thank you for playing !

First of all, I had a lot of fun playing the game! Spent a good couple of hours trying to beat it. I should say I haven't beat it, but I did feel like I made a lot of progress on my strategy. Was hard to understand the mechanics at the beginning, I had no clue what I was doing until later in the game. A little tutorial at the beginning would be nice. Also, enemy attacks sometimes feel unfair. Just because it's unclear of how they work and what dices they role each turn. Most games have a little diary about each enemy and more things the player might want to know about. With all that in mind, I still think you did a great job on the visuals and sound feedback. It was clear enough for me to get what's going on just by playing a bit more. Very well done! Love it.

(+3)

it would be nice to hold click an enemy to see maxand minimal damage, and what it does (if it heals, if it gives other enemies shield, etc.)

(+1)

I there something that makes the queen bee angry or is it a thing that happens after a set number of turns have passesd?

yep i'd like to know, too :)

(+1)

look i got good dice but i lost to a elite spider, axe guy, and purple fly

Bad rng. It happens all the time.

(1 edit)

I'm not sure if I've ever won up after facing that trio. They all deal high damage, and the axe guy deals even more if you don't constrain yourself to inefficient patterns. Even in the rare occasion that I win, my HP are so depleted that I can't survive anything but good luck in the next fight or two.

(+3)

I've played several times, and while I've neve reached the final boss, I've had a bunch of fun!

Two criticisms I have of the Muscle Boost enemy: It's really, really unclear how that ability works, and it's pretty tough to counter.

For the longest time, I assumed that the Muscle Boost ability meant that putting dice in the red spaces would boost the enemy's damage, presumably proportionally to the numbers on those dice. Needless to say, they kept murdering me. The little muscly arm icon helps, but it's not clear what that means unless you intuit that there's an associated tooltip.

Second, it's tough to counter. Unless you have a decent number of hollow dice or low-level Boost dice, there aren't many useful formations you can put dice in that cover all three spaces. It feels like covering just one or two should have some effect, but it doesn't—put all three dice in a line or just eat double damage.

Anyways, despite that I'm still enjoying myself. Trying to figure out a good strategy to use. Probably need to remove dice more often...

(+1)

Finally reached the Queen Bee. Wish I could tell what makes her mad/how to handle it, because it's wiping my shields dry.

(Also wish I'd found more attack dice, though turtling got me to the bottom of the dungeon, so maybe it wasn't so bad?)

(+1)

And now I finally beat the game! I'd like to thank the heavy block dice for letting me turtle so dang much, and mirror dice for letting you pull off silly stunts. (It also helped that I figured out how the crown spaces work.)

(+3)

I wanted to immortalize this moment.

(Especially since I accidentally closed the tab almost immediately afterwards.) Anyways, hollow and heavy dice are a ton of fun, and I'm disappointed that there isn't a way to add those qualities to dice you already have.

(1 edit)

A bit overkill. I really hate those green healers since they heal alot of hp.

(+1)

Dude. Total agree. It's super unclear how the muscle guy's power gets triggered.

(2 edits)

The muscle guy goes 10 dmg but if you cover all the red spaces then it will only do 5 dmg.

(1 edit) (+2)

2 OP heal dices and attack dices(6 every time).

one of the most uniqe games i have found on here

Is this an intended feture?

Yup. It's how the mirror dice level up—they have a greater chance of being usable when you roll them.

(+1)

It wouldn't let me level it though...

I played for around 1,5h and didn't manage to finish yet, but won't stop trying! Very nice game, love the art and idea for dice mechanics! First, I thought you used GMS2 to make it, but build told me otherwise :> Keep up the great work

(+1)

WOW thats a lot of dice in your deck

is that a non-glass heal cube? if so, wow.

It's called "MIRACLE", made my run!

Thats just broken...

I enjoyed the game with its pixel design as well as its combat system. I am hoping to see more games similar to this. I haven't beaten it yet but I will keep trying. Keep up the great work.

Thank you!
