How does your game fit either (or both) genres?
It is a metroidvania because it is one large level with backtracking. Magical girl because you are a girl with a magic skateboard and there is a transformation sequence the end of the game!

Chosen theme(s) and relevant explanations
Unity -> Shredoka re-Unites with her old friend. Unreal -> You play in a dreamworld.

Amazing presentation and very creative idea!

I am really terrible at these kind of games, so I could not make it too far. I got the second trick (Downwards Grab) after about an hour of gameplay and could not get out of a vertical pit (my skill issue)

Even so, this was a really impressive jam entry with a solid execution!

Great game in terms of presentation, and a truly unique Metroidvania to boot! Unfortunately, it's not really for me, as it heavily features two things I'm terrible with in video games: time trials and modifier keybinds. I do wish I could have beaten it, though!

It's a huge shame, because I think the mobility, sense of speed, and combat were almost perfect, and I'd have loved to see the other powerups. And honestly, I think I would have enjoyed the platforming challenges a lot if it hadn't been for the time constraint!

Sadly, the time trials eventually just sapped all of the joy out of the game for me, especially when I realized the reward was usually just another flip or grab, in other words: more time trials (and another keybind to keep track of). I'm not sure what's standard for this genre of game, but there certainly was a lot of keybinds compared to basically every other game in the gamejam...

I also had somewhat mixed feelings about the style mechanic. It was fun when you were zipping around doing cool stuff and ended up with tons of style to use on boosts or attacks, but there were also times where I basically had to jump and twirl around until I had enough to retry a challenge or deal with an enemy. I think perhaps it'd be nice if you spawned with a bit of style already, and the costs were a bit cheaper.

Sadly, I couldn't really try the game with a controller due to lacking a Y-inversion option. There was also a death pit near the entrance of the Tower (I think) where a kill plane was missing, leading you to get stuck down there if you fell. In the area of the Pit accessed from the Sea, I respawned on some broken fencing in such a way that my character kept continuously falling into the abyss until a game over.

That said, the models and animations were gorgeous, and the cutscene in the beginning was pretty cool (if surprisingly dark). The levels fit the playstyle very well, and had some nice visuals, with the Sea level being my favorite!

All in all, I think the time challenges would have been great as an optional feature. Like in Pseudoregalia, where they just unlock extra outfits but aren't required for progression, and you're free to come back to them later, when you're already good at the game. Still, I had a lot of fun skating and beating up enemies for a while. Very impressive job!

Pretty cool, I like the dreamy retro aesthetic. At first I had trouble with the controls, but I got more used to them overtime. I haven't gotten very far, but I'm excited to explore more of the game!

I love the aesthetic. I see the Skate Story and Madoka Magica inspiration. Wouldn’t have crossed my mind to combine those two. Well done.

The controls definitely didn’t come easy to me, but I dug the world and vibe. I’m gonna check out your Steam game – I’m curious to see what you do without the limitations of a game jam.

I played through the whole game and got every collectible except for one and I loved it. The movement isn't the same as other skater games but it works better for a platformer. The only thing I would have liked to see is uses for the other tricks or maybe have them combo with the other tricks. Otherwise outstanding game and I would love to see this polished and released as an independent game. It also fit very well with the themes of the game jam so I hope this game scores well.

[WARNING, SUICIDE ATTEMPS ON THIS GAME]

The title screen school gave me Yanderedev vibes and honestly that just felt like it wanted to hurt me. The fact the highlight color is dark violet made me think the white was the highlight and press quit the first time i opened the game… and then while i was playing the game i accidentally pressed quit and had to restart the game.

The game starts with a suicide attempt and honestly that should have been a warning at the start of the game.

There is a bug that if you tab out of the game, it doesn’t let you go back in, it will start playing again but you will not be able to see it, so thank god for the saves.

Personally i find the fact that i had to spend style points to attack made me really try to avoid the enemies, since only the platform ones gave style points back, i felt like i was just wasting my points trying to defeat them, im not sure if it was intentional or not, but i wasn’t a fan of it, felt very pace stopper.

there is also situations where if you got to a zone but you don’t have the powerup needed to advance, you are just stuck on there for a while, because getting in is easy, but getting back out is hard. On the sea zone where there is a hole with a seal to use the left trick, since i didn’t have it, i got stuck for a good while trying to dash into the hole i came back, but the enemy was too far away to attack it, and if i had to dash, since the dash and attack both costs points, i had to do tricks completely still to get the 500 points to even attempt to leave, eventually i got tired of failing and just closed the game to go back to the checkpoint.

After being unable to find the top flip for like 30 minutes, i saw that i had been playing the game for 6 hour straight, and chose to go “Nah im good”

maybe one day i will finish the game, but hey, 6 hours of game for a gamejam, that’s ok in my book.

Anyways:

Shredoka, become Shreguca.

Solid entry. Knew I'd play it as soon as I heard of it. Your take on movement and progression is very unique and it makes the game unforgettable. My only nitpick is how it was often difficult to execute the puzzles due to how many things you have to do at once, but that's probably a skill issue on my part. Really enjoyed my stay either way. Great game!

Easily the most curious about this one and it did not disappoint. I don’t know what i Was expecting from “Shredoka - Magical Girl Skateboarding”, but I’m so here for it. I’m definitely not good enough at it, though. I’ll have to put more time into it

Also, I very much appreciate that the map is a toggle

The art style is great, and the sound design during the opening gave me goosebumps ¦3

Skating controls felt very satisfying. The level layout is very confusing, but it was fun to skate around different areas trying to figure out where to go and how to do it. The sense of exploration is amazing in this game!

The concept for this game is totally unique and awesome. I myself might not be the best video gamer to exist, however I love the skateboarding in this game. The way to input tricks and grabs is also very cool and I really liked building up lots of speed and flying myself into the wall!

I'm a bit stuck in some parts of the game, but from everything I've played I can say for sure that the artstyle is very cool, the cutscene at the start is awesome and the gameplay might be some of the best that I have played in this jam. (I love skateboarding).

Our team is also planning on making a 3D game. So seeing a 3D game made with the same engine that we use (Godot) is very inspiring to us! :D

Overall: Love it.

Definitely one of the more creative takes. I like the sound effect and responsiveness.

I really love the idea  — such a fun concept with some neat tricks throughout. Pretty rad overall, great job guys!

Great game. My only wish is to have more like THPS logic on ramps. Like if you vertical jump brings you vertical. Many times you just lose speed on small ramps and jump off them like from wall ride.  Didn't finish the game yet. But will comeback to it and play through 100%.  Good job
