Game Description
Play as a bear fattening up for hibernation! Based on Katmai National Park's annual "Fat Bear Week" compeition :)

How does your game tie into the theme?
You play as a bear that gets larger and larger the more it eats. The goal is to get as large as possible before the timer for winter sets in

amazing work with animations!

Good job and congratulations on your submission!

The title really attracted me to the game, I really like how you got inspired by fat bear week lmao. The game itself was also really good, I think that the theme for expansion was very well done in this entry to be honest, congrats!

This was a real joy to play! The whole thing captures the theme of Expansion perfectly. Watching the bear gradually grow larger as you hoover up berries and fish feels really rewarding, and ties nicely into that looming race against winter.

The art direction is charming too. The bear sprite has loads of character, and the landscapes shift from calm rivers to golden woodland in a way that keeps it fresh. The UI is tidy and clear, with the winter timer bar doing a great job of keeping the tension high without cluttering the screen.

This was so cute, I loved playing this and it's such a cool thing seeing procedural animations added in, that's not something you see every day in a game jam game! This has me curious though, how much of the jam did you spend getting the movement to where you wanted it to be? I can't imagine that was easy LMAO. Great submission overall though :)

Developer(+1)

LOL it definitely took some time to get the movement/animation working! Probably the first 3-4 days that's all I was doing 馃槅. But it was a style I really wanted to experiment with, so it was worthwhile to me! Thanks for playing & for the kind words!

You're welcome! And I'm glad you managed to get it implemented in the end, it was definitely worth those 3-4 days!

Hell yeah Fat Bear Week! Such a novel little idea, really cool to see the procedural animation worked in too!

I liked the challenge of getting as fat as possible before winter, but I can鈥檛 help but want to take my time to explore the landscape and play with the movement a little more gently - but that鈥檚 hardly a criticism on what you鈥檝e created, more of a personal thing.

Really nicely done!

Cute game! I love the bear movement. How was it done??

Developer

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the movement, it's a little complicated 馃槄. Basic overview is:

  1. Head rotates toward mouse position
  2.  player position turns toward head's rotation while moving
  3.  current speed is determined based on input and current bear size - larger size makes player accelerate slower and makes speed degrade slower when the player releases the arrow key (to make the bear seem really heavy when it gets bigger)
  4. use godot physics to update the player position based on velocity
  5. Player position then updates a "chain" of 4 body positions: neck -> front body -> middle body -> back body. The neck is where the player node's position is, and then the other 3 are clamped a set distance from the point in front of it each frame. This video explains it pretty well!
    1. Legs are also procedurally animated, basically they know where they'd be if they'd just taken a step, and if they're too far away from that position they lerp towards it each frame
  6. Bear mesh is re-made each frame by updating the points on a Polygon2D based on the body, leg, and head positions and a bunch of const offsets from those points!

I just added the project to my github if you want to take a look at the script!

This is so cute, and the concept is fun, but I had some issues that made it difficult to play. I first played it on Safari and had some audio lag, so I reloaded on Chrome but had a visual bug. It might be an issue with my computer trying to run it, but I would've loved to have been able to give it a fair shot! Good thing my teammates will give it a chance in my place :)

Developer

So sorry you had trouble with it! I wasn't able to test it out on other machines but there are certainly some aspects of it that may not be super-performant 馃槄

Submitted(+1)

I loved it! Super cute and fun - It took me a while to understand how to move, but that's probably on me XD

super fun game, a little loud on the music haha. Loved trying to chase the fish

Developer

I did the "audio mixing" about 25 minutes before submissions were due haha, I thought I turned it down enough but apologies if you got blasted 馃槅. Thanks for playing!!

I like the controls, and the unique interpretation of expansion! The audio could do with a volume control.

Neat game!  It seems that just like real bears... the trick is to wait in the water and snap up the fishies!
