If you have a question about the poetry jam please ask here!

What font did you use for the title/headings for the bullet point sections? I realize this is not a question about the jam, but I like it. It's like if cooper black got a sophisticated makeover.

Host(+1)

i love talking abt fonts so dont worry. do you mean what font does itch.io use by default? or the bullet points on the 4 FAQ images i made? the two fonts i used on the poster + images were title: Grouch BT and accent: Gill Sans

I have two questions:

  • What makes writing poetic enough to count as poetry, rather than prose?
  • I'm a registered nurse; I want to write about my experiences as nurse who's trans, but I also realize that there are plenty of people who've been mistreated/traumatized by shitty nurses and/or shitty hospital systems. How would I tag for that? Should I even try to participate in the jam, in case that makes things weird?

hey fossil,

  • that's a good question, as sometimes when you compare some prose and some poetry they come across as the same kind of writing. in my opinion, i think some poetry tends to feel like "stripped back prose" where a writer who either wants to challenge their approach to prose and bring it down to the fundamental points and concepts of the message by utilizing language in it's strongest ways or who finds the detail of prose overwhelming expresses their story without the constraints and expectation of complete essays, perfect grammar, or coherent sentence structure. that's just one way poetry can be though. stream of consciousness, poetic prose, long form poetry ... those are all equally "poetry" as the point of poetry is that there's no limit. i think what makes prose prose is that the author says "this is prose" and what makes poetry poetry is the author says "this is poetry". does that mean it's good or can only be interpreted that way? no. but ultimately i think the distinction can be found both in the approach and presentation, and what the author says about their own work.
  • i think hearing about healthcare from trans healthcare providers instead of just cis ones is great and really important. unless you're going to be writing "i think teaching there are only two immutable sexes is fine and good" (something a trans doctor said to me once?) or generally saying that you think the ways medicine and healthcare both mistreat trans/non-cis/intersex people and miseducate about their needs are good, it shouldn't be an issue. if you tag it [medical] [discussion of medical practice] [trans healthcare] [gender and medicine] and so on, so that a reader can decide for themself if it'll be okay for them or not, that should be all you have to do! i don't think you're gunna be writing the above negative examples though haha, so i don't think there's anything to worry about! i want this 'jam' to make people feel like they can and should participate, not that they shouldn't. i don't think any of our readers will cause any issue, and if they do go after authors for no reason other than engaging with difficult topics or personal experiences (not bigotry), i'll talk it out with said readers and discourage them from doing so if that does end up happening.

let me know if that answers your questions!

Hi ! I'm a motion graphics designer + illustrator. I dabble in poetry and usually illustrate my texts ! I have a few questions :

  •  Is it okay to add pictures / drawings to my chapbook ?
  • Follow up : if its okay, i'd love to collab with other peeps and illustrate some of their poetry.
  • Does it have to be all english ? I'm french and usually try to translate my stuff in FR + ENG !

Unrelated, thank you so much for organizing all of this, I'm so glad I found out abt this jam and I can't wait to see what comes out of it !

Host
  • please make as many images and pictures as you want! because its a digital release every page could be animated. you could be making every page text laid over a video if you wanted to. it can be as plain and still as you want or as detailed and moving as you want.
  • it is definitely okay! i do not know how many people are open to collabs, but i can mention you in the next email so theyre aware they can reach out to you if thats cool?
  • no! the entire text could be in french only and that would be entirely fine. i love translations and think they are the future of poetry! french is the only non-english language i know anything about so this is personally exciting to me!

excited to see what you do! let me know if you have any follow ups :)

You can def give out my twitter @ Luluugargh , I'll be able to work with maybe 2-3 person, but it'd be fun to collab I think ?
Thank you so much for your answers !!!

Hi, I'm a student, but I'm willing to try this Poetry Jam just for experience.

All I wanted to ask was:

  • Are mental issues (such as stockholm syndrome, depression or ADHD) too sensitive if I tried to make a chapbook out of it?
  • I know poetry could mean a different thing to some people, but would it be okay to add some interpretation to it (or should I leave it for other people to guess)?

Thanks for hosting this Poetry Jam, I'm getting excited for this.  <3

  • not at all, i feel like i clarified in the 'Guidelines' section that my only concern about content was bigotry - not concerns about intense personal experiences or struggles. discussing mental health is fine! if you still arent sure youre always welcome to tag it when you publish it so readers can decide for themself!
  • had a little difficulty parsing this question, but i think you mean "can i do a side by side - this is why i wrote this poem - this is what this means - this is what its about"? if so yes of course. there really are not that many rules beyond dont be a shitty person about what you can or cant do. there arent really any limitations here

hope that answered your questions! happy writing

- Vin

Alright, thanks for the quick reply (and the clear-up of all the worries I had at the moment)! :)

Normally game jams ask that all the work for the jam be done during the jam period, is there a similar restriction for this jam or can we polish a couple poems we've previously written?

Host

Pretty sure this is stated a few times across the writing about the jam, but no. There are no rules saying everything must be new and unique for the jam.

Are there any ideas on how to facilitate building community during the jam?

Host

I mean, best way is to get all your friends to be aware of it, keep up with posts about it, to post with the hashtag, and follow usual boost-method growth. Just how you'd normally form a community around any kind of event or common interest you know?

yes you can make a game, and there is no minimum, but i think people find small paragraphs of 40-90 words the most ideal to read with short attention spans, but that longer poems are also good. there are basically no rules!

If i have images in my chapbook should the .txt file have image descriptons? I figured that would be necessary for screen readers and the like.

Host

while a plain .txt file wouldnt usually include images it would definitely be appreciated if you do include image descriptions!

I know this is a dumb question, but is there no theme?

Host

Yep, there's no theme. Please make sure to read the "Guidelines" section, refer to any emails you may have received if you've joined, the resources document, and the FAQ images if you're still unsure what that means!

Can I use poems that I posted on my Instagram account?

Host

Yes!

Hello, I'm new to itch.io but I've been writing poetry for the last few years. This is my first self-made chapbook though, and I'm not sure how to put it all together. Any suggestions?

Submitted(+1)

I pretty much just pasted my poems into a google doc, put a little bit of formatting so that the titles of the poems were bold and the title of the chapbook was large and I'll  make it into a .txt and .pdf Here's how to do that: https://ww.9to5google.com/2019/11/09/create-google-docs-pdf-document/#

Please make sure to read through all the links I provided in the OP and the compilation of resources in the resources document i linked at the very beginning of the original jam page as well. if you still have questions after that then ill try and make a more specific resource simply about compilation

Friendly advice that you don't have to take but thought I might as well share... Don't be too worried or overwhelmed, just upload whatever you can and go from there, you can always change something if you need to and other people will help with what you need! I went with a google doc and a picture I edited on my phone, doesn't have to be fancy. Good luck! :)

Thanks! I always get really intimated when I start a new project cause I want it to be perfect right from the get-go. This usually ends with me not even finishing it (╥_╥)

Can I add to my submission after it's been submitted?

Host

absolutely! please feel free

Is it okay to submit multiple works to this jam?

Host

yes

Hello! This jam seems like a fabulous idea, as I love to write poetry whenever I have the time, and I have some previously written works I'd love to gather in a collective. I just have a quick question!

- Would a collection of song lyrics be considered appropriate? I honestly always feel poetry and lyrics are closely related, in that lyrics are nothing more than poetry designed for musical backdrop, but I was wondering if it'd be appropriate for this jam. Would lyrics be OK, or should it just be straight up poetry?

Thank you ^^

Host

That's fine, no worries

Thank you for your response ^^
