Looting SurprisesView game page

Santa's "Naughty List" is horribly outdated and in need of restructuring. Namely, I shouldn't be on it.

Simple mechanics at first, but really challenging once you get surprised! To be honest, my first reaction was "hmm this is kinda simple, almost boring for a platformer" in the first level because I reached the present so easy! Though I did not expect the surprise :D
That really was a nice twist, making the platformer into a heist game. I loved the hazards that add a time limit like the water levels!

My (very nitpicky) negative aspect is the art. It is good, but repetitive. The levels could have used some more details and variation of paltform types, spike types and background types. But again, this is really nitpicky.

It was fun and challenging to play! Here are my times (from the first run):

Simply astonishing, hands down the best game i've seen in this jam (my opinion ofc) i litteraly have no complaints, great art, music, controls, level design,  sfx, and most importantly amazing concept i saved the game so i could finish it later, and i'd be interessted in a full release for SURE. a full mark for this one.

the only comment i may add is maybe make the UI better, otherwise good job team!

i never thought pixel art that small would be so adorable xD, it was such a simple game but it got me hooked with coming back with the item it made things way more interesting! (cant improve my first times tho xD)

Developer

Thanks! Gutagi and Nodegama created all the art during the Jam.

I love the pixel art and the controls feel good. One of my favorite parts is when I jump or fall on something, the tiny "click" sound that you make. Great job everyone!

Really good game! I absolutely love the take on theme and the concept is polished and well executed throughout. I actually felt motivated to keep playing, which is really good! I have some minor issues though. The controls feel a little off, mainly the fact you slide off the corners of edges. That makes it feel like the character is more slippery than they should be. Furthermore, I think some of the level design is a little cramped feeling and doesn't completely encourage the speed running mentality you are going for. Finally, I think the waiting time once you die is a little too long. I'd like just a quick fade and get right back into the game instead of a death animation, a fade and a door opening. Minor issues though, overall, fantastic game!

Love the suprise elements and the (meteors?) Made the return trip challenging! Music and sounds are top notch!

Little bug for your fixes pressing D and mashing W against a wall causes you to soar high! Weirdly this doesn't happen with A and W.

The movement feels great, fun concept, good art, great game. Good job!

I'm not sure I follow the story or how the surprise theme fits in (though it was definitely surprising the first time you grab an item!), but I liked the gameplay and the fact that running the level in reverse feels so different.  Nicely done!

yeah, I'm pretty sure the egg grab is the surprise, or at least it surprised me lmao.

I really liked this one, it's well polished and nice to control. I loved the variety in effects too, and the timer was a nice touch too. Really nice platformer, good job!

A really cool game. The music and sound-effect in particular stood out to me as a strong point. They really make it feel epic.

Developer

Thanks! It's all original music and sound effects by Ryan. He makes great stuff.

Really Awesome way to approach the theme. Right music at the right time,  Great SFX during landing. Solid Jam entry!

The game is really good! Each level has a nice surprise fitting really well with the theme. The jump feels really polished. Only thing I would say is to try and set velocity to 0 when you hit the alert trigger. On the water level it threw me down into the pit setting me at a significant disadvantage.

Personally I don't usually like platformers like this. Honestly, this was too difficult for me. However, for the number of different interacting elements I wouldn't be surprised if this is the best game in the jam. 5 stars for sure.

My main potential advice would be that if the obstacles were stunning rather than lethal I'd be much more likely to play a level again and again to get a faster time... perhaps that could be an optional "accessibility" mode (if not the default setting)? It wouldn't be unbalanced for high scores, because having to stop moving for 2 seconds would already invalidate a run either way.

This game is well made. I love it!
