Well well... This entry is very interesting. Would maybe rank itself high if the theme was still "Pride + Identity" like last year.

Saying this because of the "Alter" characters in there. The "original" universe that gets stiched together with Gensokyo is comprised of OCs, but also self-inserts(?), fanon depictions of Touhou characters (Kazami "Youkai Moe" Yuka), depictions of of what some characters could have been (Rinnosuke maybe? Alter Rinnosuke is some kind of serpent with multiple hands who hoards items instead of "selling" them; and a diligent Alter Reimu who looks like PC-98 Reimu )and "hidden" Touhou characters (Ran and the youkai fox she possesses who goes by the name Daji in this VN). Not sure about Hartmann's.

And by the context of the story, these contrasts between the original Touhou characters (the "Externals") and their respective Alters are so big they could bring up the theme of identity, the identity given and perceived by the Touhou fandom to the Touhou characters.

But that's not the main point isn't it? This story is mostly about A Mokou whose character develops thanks to the fateful encounters in this VN.

I may have not undertood all the references and inside jokes (but am I glad someone enjoys ido & co's fangames too lol) but I got glued so much I read everything to the end. The pace really dies at the end and gets a bit wierd after Silent got defeated, but nothing more Gensokyo than a party with everyone met on the way, hahaha.

(where's satsuki rin)

Oh, thanks, this is such a wonderful comment!

Hartmann's is a bit of a difficult reference to pin down, because I'm not entirely sure that what lead to her creation even actually existed. A long time ago, I could swear there was a subsect of Touhou fanart that was sorta creepy and unsettling (black and white with heavy black shading and quite sketchy lines) and it was referred to as "Hartmann's Touhou", because it has spawned from "Hartmann's Koishi" (the name of which being based on Hartmann's Yokai Girl). Nowadays, I can't find proof of this ever being a thing, but Hartmann's is a reference to that (and I guess to stuff like Third Eye as well, generally just the creepier side of Koishi, except she's still just a kid who wants to do kid things)

The pace died at the end cuz I was tired, honestly ^^; Yonhiko's a brat, but considering what the crew had just been through, I couldn't figure out a reason that any of them would try and fight him, and anything he could do would be quickly stifled now that three entire people were completely unwilling to deal with his shit (Xian's entire situation was caused by him, A Mokou had just dealth with three fights in a row, and Fleurdelys was thoroughly tired of being lasered). If I ever do a rewrite, that's probably the part that would change the most

(Satsuki Rin is actually around somewhere! She's going to be a major character in one of the games i have planned based in this setting, so she definitely exists in this universe)

I'm glad you liked it!

Really interesting story, and I hope to see it developed through. The writing  and world building is very original and hilarious. I would suggest to add at least have some sound effects because it is really dull with pure silence. I really like the character quirks and expressions. hope to see it to it's completion.

Developer

Ah, thank you! The next version will be adding music (I've had music the whole time, but it was made outside of Jam scope so I couldn't include it), and will be looking into sound effects as well^^

Well, thats a lot to digest, its very long and many characters are introduced into this kinda void world, some of them make sense, but many conversations doesn't seem to get anywhere, I think the story could be condensed into something shorter (and I'm aware that the demo section exists).

Characters are likeable, but I guess they should have some kind of attachment with their worlds, making them break the fourth wall so soon just shatters all sense of fantasy and immersion.

Yeah, it doesn't work to its benefit, but it's a part of the style I was aiming for (a parody game in the style of Busy Person, which is quite roundabout and lengthy)

The non-parody version of the game will probably be condensed dialogue-wise. I definitely went off the rails with it cuz it's the kind of thing I enjoy writing ^^;

(1 edit)

I see, well, its a good thing that you enjoy writing, but it must have solid points so people can understand it better.
But I get it, I love the busy person series, what I like more about them is that they have simple characters that doesn't care that much about the plot and build some side stories within it, playing with that concept around touhou characters is quite easy because we had known them for years, so we can understand when they do something silly related to their personalities, because we understand that as a trope.

This narrative is way more hard to apply to new characters because  you need to introduce them first as a characters and then as a parody of themselves,  presenting then in a silly way just make it harder to set them in a more serious environment later on.

Thanks for the reply!

H-hey, the number of unanswered questions isn't supposed to grow exponentially like that..! But yes, the dialogue here is slick and fast-paced, and full of original ideas. One thing I would prefer is to have each of the various characters take on more of a well-defined role within the overarching storyline. But it might just be too early to tell.

Thank you!

Yeah, the first draft doesn't really have any character arcs necessarily, and that's mostly down to it being a first draft (and a parody). I lean a little too much on the Extra Stage as a catch-all for answering questions

I'll definitely keep these things in mind going forward, thank you

Nice to see some trans themes! I have not finished reading yet because it's a tad bit long but it is pretty cool. I think some music/sfx would make for a more immersive experience.

Developer

Thank you! The next version is going to have music. I can't make music myself unfortunately, hence it not being in this version

I'll see if I can find some free-to-use SFX too
