Woah! Memory unlocked! What a cool choice to use the UX design of old systems for both the art style AND the mechanics for a game! It already feels very complete :O.

Figuring out how to track down the virus was such a fun process!  I also loved how Gerald’s personal records and logs made me feel like I had to fix this computer no matter what. There’s only one ending, right? I feel kinda bad for Gerald… couldn't figure out the password at the end...:(

But seriously, this was such a great game! I had a blast playing!

I really enjoyed this! I got that nostalgic feeling even though I wasn't even alive during this era of computers, so that says something about the feeling of authenticity this evokes. The only real issue I encountered was the tilde key not working, but that was caused by me having a non-English keyboard setting where the tilde is replaced by a semicolon. So, I had to quickly switch to an English keyboard. Otherwise, this was really enjoyable. The puzzles weren't that hard, but they were still enjoyable to solve, and I like how you put hints for the puzzles on your site rather than just a straight-up solution.

Wow! That's a very high effort here! Maybe game wasn't too scary, but man - you must put a lot of work to create a computer system yourself i guess. That's impressive :D

This was awesome! I've spent a good amount of time clearing all the viruses and reaching the end. This is absolutely just my type of game! I love those DOS style games, or even VHS games. Somewhere in the middle I found myself just sitting in the network settings and enjoying the song, it sounds great 😄

Yo! The calculator had a minigame! That blew my mind so bad, and also took like... 15 minutes of my playtime just playing it again and again. Actually, gotta admit it, I spend lot of time just playing the minigames and just having simple fun, mostly because  every time I encountered a virus I think I effectively was soft-locked pretty bad. Pressing ~ seemed to do nothing, tried multiple times after reading up the website/description and other comments, I have no idea why, because my first instinct was that it's not working because the control is tied to a different key in my keyboard (been there before, where game bugs out since my region got them fancy Ä and Ö keyboard layouts are different), but this could very much be just the case of web version being weird, because in the end it shouldn't matter at most the key placement would be just different and I think I mashes all my keys trying to figure out where the hell ~ is. Could also be that I just simply did it wrong and I really had been had by the jiggler. So I will have to try out downloading the game later and try again :)

But so far, emulating the old school computers hit the mark, vibe was great, I proved myself as OXO master and god I wish every calculator had minigames... Very good job!

Thanks for playing the game and sharing thoughtful feedback! I'm sorry the 'killswitch' code seems to have messed up - I will need to playtest and see if the tilde (~) doesn't work for other keyboard layouts. It's always a bit annoying when things work for one but not for someone else, as it seems you're not alone with those issues! Thanks for persevering though and I'm glad you generally had fun! Please let me know if the same issue occurs on the desktop version if you're so inclined to give it a go sometime.

Also, as a fun trivia, the calculator game is Digi Invaders - it was a real game you could play on an 80s Casio MG-880! Check out a video here:

By the ending I was feeling like a detective. I also enjoyed the settings app and sat around playing with that for a while. I was also way too addicted to the calculator game and sat playing it for a good 5 minutes lol. You never disappoint when it comes to story, and I enjoyed the little bits and pieces you gave us about Marcus.  The biggest problem I noticed was that you couldn't navigate past taken blocks on naughts and crosses, meaning if there was a solid wall across the board you actually couldn't access what's on the other side of it (if that makes sense). That's the biggest issue I could find, which is very impressive given we only had a week! I loved all the juice it had and I honestly forgot I was playing a game for a few moments as I started to explore the different files and apps. You've done a really good job using your themes, and have made a really good submission.

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback! Yes! I love games that require a bit of detective work, and the intent of the game was to merge that with the act of debugging or trying to 'break' things to find solutions. I'm glad that the game got you into that headspace. As with Shellie's Secret and doing ARG elements, I love immersiveness, so it means a lot that you felt that come out of this game too.

On your feedback - that's a good pickup, I notice that I haven't quite nailed navigating arrays in the calculator and the noughts and crosses game. I'm glad you were able to reach the conclusion of the game, or at least the password-protected stuff.

Thanks again!

I somehow managed to forget that I had entered the bulletin.sys and not once did it occur to me to press esc so I sat there confused for a very long time. When I recovered from what I can only assume was a mild aneurism it was a lot of fun going through trying to find all of the  viruses. Can't say I encountered any bugs, but playing in browser probably wasn't the best way to play as you can keep the game full screen.

Wow, super awesome game and unique, Love that you made a whole computer with all these functions, simple but extremely well executed. I know you made it in a limited time but its hard not to imagine what a full game with interesting graphics (retaining the retro style of course) would make it really nice :) well done

Another very unique game!  I enjoyed trying to find all of the different viruses. The computer system is very detailed and well-implemented! You can even download files from the game to your computer, which is cool. At first, I missed that the bulletin was highlighted so I was unsure what was blocking me from exiting certain programs.  I realized what it was after reading the bulletin.  I played on the Web build and the only issue I had was that escape to exit a program can be annoying since it closes full-screen mode. Great work, a very neat game.

So I think it's just my laptop, but there's a bug when I pressed the `/~ key during both the Mini game glitches (Not spoiling them) Nothing happened...

Developer (1 edit)

No problem! Appreciate the feedback. Try holding the ~ key or pressing it multiple times and see if that works. It may be that longer or multiple input is required because I messed up how the event listeners are functioning. If that isn't working, let me know which one it is and I'll jump in and investigate. I've definitely completed the game on the DL and web version, so hopefully not a big bug!

Apon trying that nothing happened, again it's probably because I use a laptop where ` and ~ share a key, I did find out I could use the touch keyboard to activate it, but when I discovered the clown it soft locked me, even when I did the touch keyboard it didn't work.

Thank you for helping out! I'll take a look into this one :)

This was a FASCINATING concept. Wonderfully unsettling sound design, incredibly creepy atmosphere and I had a blast trying to find all of the viruses. I couldn't find them all, but it felt really satisfying to find the ones I could. Loved it!

Thank you so much! If you're inclined to find the rest, I've posted some hints on my website on where to find the remainder, and plan to make some minor fixes to signal them better. Appreciate it!

This is such a cool concept! I can't believe you managed to create a whole bunch of computer functions, I went into the drawing application thinking: "They didn't! Only a fool would play god!" and I was shocked to see it worked XD, I love this so much! Although I am a bit unsure as what to do, how to remove viruses and such.

Thanks for playing and the nice comments! The game page and text files, particularly one of the bulletins, outlines you basically press the tilde (~) key once a virus starts when it reaches the point that it freezes the computer. You can monitor how many viruses there are and whether they're active or taken out using the ICEBREAKER application. How you find the viruses is kind of the point of the game, but I posted some hints on my website on how to find them all and finish the game.

Hey, the developer here: I'd be particularly keen on any feedback you have on bugs or issues you might come across to make the game as consistent as possible for everyone - if you do come across something, please let me know which version you played, the browser if relevant, and details about what happened. Thanks a bunch!
