Premises
I wanted to challenge myself for my third composition ever done (after a big hiatus since the last big OST Jam 07, and Crunchtime seemed like a good idea. I was captured instantly by how beautiful this image is. The girl in the dark stretching her arm to reach the light, the shadows of windows (but almost akin the bars of a cell), the bird, everything in the picture is incredibly evocative with the text theme. My first thought was of course the metaphysical nature of the theme. "Freedom" in the sense of that picture is thematically tied with the struggles of the mind. Escaping the darkness that binds us

A journey to escape the darkness
The picture shows a character with an emotionless expression almost, like they've been emptied from their life force.
In a sense, this makes me think of the feelings you stop experiencing when you are depressed.
Depression binds us to the darkness, our mind becomes our prison.
We stop "feeling", we stop loving, we stop caring... The fact that they only had the strength to get one of her arms up, with her hand loose shows me how much of a struggle it was to move towards the light.
For me this is really a journey to escape the darkness of our minds, with all our might, even if it is incredibly hard to move and feel the world around us.

A Leap of Faith
I wanted to have three tracks for this OST: Mind Prison, Struggle, and A Leap of Faith.
I wanted to kinda represent the journey of someone escaping their own darkness in a way. From being in their "Mind Prison", to fighting to break out, and finally taking the leap of faith towards freedom.
The Struggle will unfortunately not be represented due to lack of time, but I tried my best :)

Music
First thing was I wanted a structure of three songs, as stated earlier.
Now I wanted to start with the last track, the leap of faith, and figure out some kind of single piano melody as I already had in mind that this small motif was going to be played one way or another in the first track too.
I came up with this little line that is both emotionally charged with melancholy and hope (of course totally subjective).
Now the idea of Freedom is as if the character just got out of the darkness and was basking in blinding light. It takes a few moments to decipher what's there but the warmth engulfs them and they start seeing what's outside. The idea was to have them break out and running and ending with a jump towards the sky where the camera would then zoom out and show birds flying over them.
I wanted this overwhelming sensation of freedom, so the track goes from melancholy and peacefulness to somewhat intense. I think this intensity works as depression can sometimes be akin to a fire extinguished.
I wanted to represent this intensity as a burning fire, a willingness to try, live and adventure, fear, hurt, but always remain hopeful!
Now for the first track I wanted the opposite, an oppressive ambient atmosphere.
But little by little, you hear something, some static, like you would be tuning to a different frequency in yourself, and start hearing birds. The melody slowly comes around, like little notes of hope and light.
As we go through the track the melody gets more and more intense, and by the end the static and the birds are overwhelming your senses. And it cuts abruptly to what was supposed to be the struggle track not made on time.

Game Design Considerations
This game should most probably be an action adventure game.
You start week in a place of darkness, find light in the darkness, fight shadows representing all kind of fears, and finally end up fighting your way out to the light.

Theme

Freedom
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The picture shows a girl with an emotionless expression almost, like she's been emptied from her life force.

In a sense, this makes me think of the feelings you stop experiencing when you are depressed.

Depression binds us to the darkness, our mind becomes our prison.

We stop "feeling", we stop loving, we stop caring... The fact that she only had the strength to get one of her arms up, with her hand loose shows me how much of a struggle it was to move towards the light.

For me this is really a journey to escape the darkness of our minds, with all our might, even if it is incredibly hard to move and feel the world around us.

I unfortunately didn't have time in around 7 hours to mlake the 3 tracks I had in mind so I did the beggining and the end, the prison and the escape so to say, and had to pass on the struggle between those two.

Great piece of work. I'm usually not a fan of overly ambient pieces, but the subtle details on Mind Prision kept me engaged (also the fact that it wasn't super dragged out). I think way you used the distorted bird sound was really cool, adding to the music instead of just being an extra sidepiece. A Leap Of Faith was probably the one I enjoyed most though. Super dramatic and I loved the vocal parts.

Developer (1 edit)

This is my third composition ever (started music last year) and my first ambient piece (all the other ones were orchestral) so I feel you, I'm usually not a big fan of ambient, but I felt it would tell the story better and tried to make it palatable even for me lol.

Thanks for listening and the feedback really appreciate!

Big fan of the chirping birds being incorporated into the tracks,  it makes the track feel lighter when compared to the more darker tone of the song. I love how you pair lighter instruments with the darker droning sounds its so good. I love the epic feel that Leap of Faith has, the way the choir almost melts into the strings is so satisfying.

all in all both tracks are pretty intense, wonderful job!!!!

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks a ton for listening and the feedback! Happy you enjoyed it, your work was close to perfect for this jam, so appreciate your input!

I really like how you took the picture theme and made it into a whole cutscene! It's so dramatic and evocative - I love it!

Fantastic production, great melodies, and an incredibly interesting story. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for the message, super happy you liked it!

Minecraft cave noices.. minecraft cave noices everywhere... and then THAT piece out of nowhere. Yeah, you've nailed it down. I've read through your description, as well as the comments. Considering that this is only your first year in music, you are doing some great progress. Keep up! (Waiting for the "Struggle")

La LA LA LAVAAAA Chi CHI CHI CHIKEEEN!

I really appreciate you taking the time to take in my thoughts and the story I was shooting for, and reading the comments on top of that is truly great dedication, so thank you for taking the time!

I'll be working on Struggle next week and would love your feedback, and I really enjoyed your submission too!

I'm curious as to what could've arose out of a longer period of time as I would want to hear a further elaboration on your vision!

The first track gives me Alon Mor vibes with the way that the ambience develops and intensifies over time (the abrupt end was surprising but welcome when given the context)

The second track is very majestic feeling! Overall, I enjoyed this project <3

Developer

Thank you so much, coming from you it makes my day! Maybe we'll catch each other in the next week long game jam ;)

Very cool couple pieces! I really like the really mysterious and ambient vibe to Mind Prison, and how powerful A Leap of Faith sounds toward the end, i think you really captured the name of the song. If only there was more time I would've loved to hear more of this! Well done :)

Developer

Thank you for the kind words, really appreciate it! Wish it was a week of jam instead of the few hours I had to dedicate to it :)

Very nice submission (pretty short but it's a good thing to want to hear more) !

Firstly I really liked reading through what you had in mind for your submission, it was very interesting to follow your train of thought and understanding how the tracks came to be (and how you interpreted the theme too).

The atmospheric buildup on the Mind Prison is pretty subtle at first but gets quite engaging (the birds chriping reminded me of the Close To The Edge intro by Yes), and I quite liked the instrumentation on A Leap Of Faith (well arranged and pretty intense with the vocals at the end).

Congrats / Félicitations !

Developer(+1)

Merci! Thanks a ton for the feedback, indeed with 7/8 hours to work on this I didn't have time for much as I'm still a really beginner (it's my third composition ever and started only last year learning a bit about music). But I'm happy that I got the gist of what I wanted. Almost feels more like a trailer than anything ahaha

Thanks again for the sweet workds, really appreciate you going through what I wrote too, I know it's work but I think it does help a bit understand what I wanted to make of it! Cheers!

This is amazing! A leap of Faith really surprised me when the drums kicked in, and every instrument satisfyingly slides into place. Mind Prison really gives the feeling of being stuck in your own mind. In total, both tracks really contrast well with each other, which I guess represent prison and freedom. Really great job, sad that you weren't able to make struggle cause it would probably sound just as good as the rest of the tracks!

Developer

Thank you I really appreciate it! I'm definitely trying Struggle after the jam because I still feel the whole is incomplete without it ahaha

Thanks for the feedback, happy you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Oh man, Leap of faith is goddam amazing. Competition not withstanding, that is just an incredible piece of music. The composition, the melodies, everything hit perfectly from the very start to the end. I'm kinda bummed that "Struggle" didn't end up being made, I'm sure it would have been wonderful.

: )

Developer

Oh thank you so much for the kind words! I'm still sulking about not being able to fit the track in-between but I'll get to work after the Jam on it definitely!

Submitted(+1)

"cinematic" as a descriptor is really fitting for your compositions; i find a lot of similarities with the cinematic vibes that games like Little Nightmares and Limbo might carry! i did find myself jumpscared with the volume dynamics while i was listening HAHA

however, i love the way the volume dynamics carry the feel of "A Leap of Faith"! in general, your soundtrack has movement in that i feel really motivated to get to the next scene of the game... and i wish it was an actual videogame so i could see the music intertwine with the gameplay! c:

Developer

That's super sweet thanks a lot for the feedback, and sorry for the scare xD

And cinematic is what I like so I'm happy it came across :) Thank you for the kind words I really appreciate it!

Prison was good but Freedom got me, the ending is the kind of thing that'll have you just staring at the credits for a few minutes afterwards :0
Incredible!!!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much! I really tried to make it as freeing and impactful as I could. It did tie into my theme that freeing ourselves from our mind prisons isn't an act of purely calmness. Living is a fire that burns, it's an all-consuming state of being, and that's maybe the beauty of it!

Thank you for your kind words!

Great write-up as always!

Mind Prison lives up to its name immediately. Dark, foreboding drone that gradually begins to open up, and with it some interesting, at times almost metallic, tones to help flesh out the frequency spectrum. I like how you've taken more of a sound-design approach with some of these effects, layering them to create various concepts of unseen motion and stirring. The gradual soft gating into the large crescendo at the end does a great job of swallowing the listener whole.

A Leap of Faith immediately pushes in a different direction. A short, pensive piano piece with some nice little bits of ear candy on the sides to complement the progression. The half way point feels more in line with what I was expecting from you; great production and a progressive introduction of multiple elements one after the other. The percussion here is really nice, but I have to say I love the use of vocals here. It's almost.. weirdly ominous in some ways. It reminds me of the Nine Sols soundtrack, which is both a game and an OST that I had a great time with last year.

Great work as always Kev, hope to see you writing more soon. Best of luck!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! It's too bad I didn't have time for the middle track between these but I tried xD Hey I did only 1 track last time, now two, next time maybe three lol

Thanks for the sweet words, really appreciate it!

Submitted(+1)

Happens man. I think these shorter jams are great just for the kick-in-the-ass to do something and submit anything, you know? You still came out with a finished product and it didn't disappoint! Gotta keep trucking on.

Developer(+1)

Definitely! And I'm so happy to see more work from familiar faces, it's just nice to be back!

Submitted(+1)

Mind Prison reminds me a lot of the Hyper Light Drifter OST, which is basically my favorite game of all time. It does a great job of being ambient with a really really cool ending that I would have liked to hear more of :)

Leap of Faith is really cool too for the same reasons, I just personally wish it took it's time to slowly introduce it's elements (though that not match the creative vision). Really I just wish there was more because it is really cool and I like it. I definitely get that the 48 hours is limiting though, hope to hear more of your stuff! :)

Developer

Well it was around 8 hours for me so I definitely had to rush the hell out of it xD

Really appreciate the feedback, HLD OST is divine so if it reminds you of that I'm ecstatic lol. And yeah for the second track I wish I could have stretched it meaningfully but I had no hopes of that happening, knowing that I didn't even have enough time for the track that was supposed to be in the middle lol.

Thank you for the feedback and the kind words, means a lot!

Submitted(+1)

Mind Prison had some awesome sound design, loved the low rumbling throughout ( and it didn't make the mix muddy, another plus!)

A Leap of Faith was great too, loved the buildup during the latter half. I think a softer piano sound in the beginning (maybe felt?) would have fit the beginning better.

I also liked what you did with the theme. It was an interesting interpretation.

Great job, especially for not touching a DAW since the last jam haha.

Developer

Hey Slaw nice to see you again!

Thanks for the feedback, honestly completely forgot I could use a felt piano xDDD

Submitted(+1)

OMG IndieKev... our projects have the same title LOL

I remember your awesome submission in OST Jam 7 and reading your description on SoundCloud was so touching. Love the ambience as well as the pretty composition on the second track. We love to see it :D

Developer (1 edit)

There is no way xDDDD

I remember Farewell fondly, it was one of my favourite albums and in my board. Can't wait to listen  to your submission <3

Thanks for the feedback, I stopped completely after ost jam #7 due to, funnily enough, the theme I wanted to talk about lol.  I really appreciate your message, thank you!

Submitted(+1)

Nice sound design in 1st track! I love that vibe<3

and the 2nd track is very impact!!

Great work!!

Developer(+1)

Thanks appreciate it!

Submitted(+1)

Loved these!

Mind Prison was probably my favorite, the ambience and production are great. It felt like it wanted to go somewhere though, was a shame you didn't have enough time to make that bridge track.

Leap of faith had some very good orchestration at the end!

Great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank a ton ! Yes the bridge track I feel would have made it feel more complete, I might try and compose it at the end of the jam just for practice and completeness sake.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it, it's my third composition ever overall so still happy I could manage to get something out xD

Submitted(+1)

Good work! I especially enjoyed the first track. The orchestral bits have a satisfying dramatism. Keep on keeping on!

Developer

Thanks! Really appreciate it!

Submitted(+1)

Really loved the vibe on PRISON, the atmosphere with the bird calls? and everything gave me a bit of the nice feels that i get from listening to Tangerine Dreams Rubycon album.

Production is really clear and punchy, but a slight nitpick i felt with FREEDOM , was that the placement of the sounds was very heavily focused on the right side, which felt a bit off (just how it felt to me on the first listen). Material and parts themselves were great though, the droning high violin and piano then going into the big bombastic stuff was really cool!

Developer(+1)

Thanks mate! I just tried to space out a bit the stereo but messed up with too much weight on one side ahahaha.

Thanks for the hint though, I'll definitely check it out after some rest, my ears are tired, and thanks for the feedback!!
