Description
These are two tracks to an imaginary platformer game in the vein of Celeste or Super Meat Boy. My DAW is Nuendo 10. My idea was to create a fusion between 8 bit sounds (I used Plogue for those) with real drum samples, so that the songs could have some "body" and groundedness that you don't necessarily get by using chip drums alone. I wanted to create music people can listen to without having played (the non existing) game, even people who aren't even into games. But I still REALLY wanted to portray my love for the old sound chips. I've no idea if I've succeeded...

The "game" is called Security. Like I said, it's a trial and error platform game in the vein of Celeste and Super Meat Boy.

The premise:

"100 years ago, the planet Nirea was struck by a devastating plague that altered the very fabric of life. This plague severed the intrinsic connection between flora and fauna, throwing the ecosystem into disarray and setting both plants and animals on a slow path to extinction. In this dying world, the remnants of civilization cling to survival, their lives a shadow of what once was.

Now, a young man named Rael, living in one of the last surviving enclaves, experiences a mysterious vision. In this vision, an enigmatic voice guides him to scale Mountain Purple, a legendary and perilous peak rumored to hold ancient secrets. Despite the risks and the skepticism of his community, Rael feels compelled to embark on this journey. He believes that the key to restoring the balance of Nirea's ecosystem lies hidden on the mountain, and that by reaching its summit, he might uncover a way to heal the planet and save all life on Nirea from impending doom."

Perennial Bloom in my mind is one of (if not) the first levels in the game. The music is not too dire, it's a bit uplifting in fact. Nothing too dangerous yet, but there are challenges, some weird chords reflect this.

Mountain Purple is endgame material. You're still not enitrely sure what fate awaits you at the top of Mountain Purple, but it's serious, and there's no way but forward.

Message from the artist
I loved doing this, no matter the outcome, it re-ignited my passion for making music for games, or better said, making music in general...

Theme

Inside my world
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The character in the theme picture reminded me of Celeste, which is one of the best games I've played in years, and also has an AMAZING soundtrack. So my mind went there and I wrote a short story premise and two tracks to support it. I'm aware that my submission doesn't really relate to the OSTjam picture theme, but I got inspired by what the theme picture reminded me of and I just went with that...

Oh these tracks are grooving! Love this score, especially Perennial Bloom; the synths are fantastic. Good work mate!

Developer

Thanks my man! Appreciate it very much!

This is rock solid, my dude. Very chill, very listenable, which is the metric I've been kind of beating people over the head with in the discord server.

Developer

Haha thanks man! "Listenable" is pretty much what I went for haha

Great submission! Perennial Bloom was top notch with your attention to detail and composition. That lead synth in that song really stole the show! This was well made, thanks for sharing!

Developer

Thank you so much!

Really love the groove on these , Perennial Bloom is giving me some Ace Attorney vibes

Developer

Thanks so much for taking the time to listen!

Oh... bro... IT'S COOL!

Mountain Purple - and from the very first seconds I was interested in it. Then, when the main melody was connected... That's cool! (I love these sounds that "walk" in my ears, heh)

Perennial Bloom - Still cool drums and melodies...

Overall - you have a great soundtrack! Diverse, fascinating, beautiful and.. I don't even know what words I can find here...

thank you!

Developer

Thanks so much for the lovely words!!! Thank YOU

I love drums, and you can't deny me that :]

The melody is really a vibe check too (chiptune and piano)

Such a good production, I have a blast through it

Thanks so much!

These tracks are simply phenomenal!! The productions are top notch, the compositions are insanely interesting and everything was very well executed! Inline with what other people were saying, expanding more on the background of the game would have been good to tie everything in with the theme more as it is hard to relate your tracks to them. I can't express how good these songs are though. Fantastic job!

Developer

You're too kind! Thanks so much... I'm gonna try to write a more expansive explenation to my imaginary game!

The tracks are really amazing!! The idea of mixing 8-bit with a real drum set, very much in hip-hop style, is really cool! The composition is on point and very well arranged, I must say! The only flaw is that I would recommend writing a more detailed story for the game: you can imagine it, but if you explained the details, it would be even more fitting in my opinion. The second track, for example, is so chill at the beginning and then evolves. I would love to know the kind of story you had in mind for it because it’s really interesting!

Great entry, well done!

Developer

Thanks so much for your kind words! I'm gonna try to write a more detailed story, that's good advice ;)

Hello! :D

I  gave both your tracks a listen. You have stellar transitions, balance of instrumentation, delivery of material,  and awesome drums! Both tracks reminded me how in jazz, a theme is established, and that said theme is given embellishment/restatement within a new voice/instrument. Within "Mountain Purple" those arpeggiated chords (especially with the 8-bit/chiptune voices) gave such NES Castlevania vibes, and I really loved it!

Only issue I had was the connection of the tracks to the theme of the jam. They don't feel as connected to the theme of the jam that can be seen in other submissions, but despite that, your tracks are by far the most captivating and groovy that I've seen thus far! Great job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks!!! Yeah I get you might have a feeling of disconnect to the theme. To me the picture just reminded me of Celeste, and from there I just created a Celeste type game in my head. So no the music isn't directly inspired by the picture itself, it's more inspired by what the picture reminded ME of.

Amazing OST!

Interesting sound transformations in Mountain Purple. It evolves progressively in an very peculiar manner.

I'm following you on Itch. Looking forward to hearing more 😄

Developer(+1)

That's so nice to hear! Thank you! I'm new to this place, but I've already seen that this community is amazing ;)

Submitted(+1)

I can hear the Celeste influences for sure and love the flavor of the percussions here. I enjoy how you process breaks and the other percs you bring to support them in "Mountain Purple".  It was also fun to crush the drums at some part in "Perennial Bloom".

Developer(+1)

Celeste was a huge inspiration for these pieces, and I'm glad you hear that. That soundtrack by Lena Raine deserves all the attention it can get. Anyway thank you so much for your kind words!

Same as others, the blend of acoustic and chiptune is exquisite! Perennial Bloom is such a beautifully crafted track in particular, I loved it! Great submission!

Developer(+1)

Thanks dude! So glad to hear postive feedback on the chiptune/acoustic blend. There are many chiptune purists out there I figure that see this as cheating or something. I dunno, maybe not, but at least I'm glad it pleases some people ;)

Submitted(+1)

I think it’s not like you just patched one into another and called it a day, it’s really beautifully weaved together, pretty sure you wouldn’t get hate for that! You did great!

Developer(+1)

Again, thanks so much ;)

Submitted(+1)

Great sound design and rythmic loop! Cool swap to chiptune in the middle, loved that :)

Love how you blend acoustic and chiptune, work well !

Developer

I'm really glad to hear you think it worked out! Thanks so much, means a lot ;)

Submitted(+1)

Super good percussion writing I really like the synth leads in both of the songs. The second half of perennial bloom just bumps! Really great work!

Developer

Thank you!!

Submitted(+1)

This was so fresh and fantastic. I absolutely loved the synth leads towards the back half of Mountain Purple, and I think you kept both pieces interesting in their arrangement. These two songs belong together, and you did a fantastic job with the mixing to keep everything balanced and dynamic.

Excellent job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much, also for saying the pieces kept being interesting. It's something I really strive for, but sometimes I'm scared going overboard, because as the composer you get bored pretty quickly after repeated listening. It's a delicate balance sometimes xD

Submitted(+2)

excellent drumwork on display here, it really enhances the digital fusion elements of your tracks.  you captured the celeste sound really well, would love to hear more in this vein from you

Developer

Thanks!!! Who knows what comes out of this jam, but the lovely comments already give me incentive to try and make more. Thanks again ;)

Love the mix between chiptune and more organic sounds. Also amazing production & mixing, well done!

Developer

Thank you man! I'm actually always pretty insecure about production so thats really nice to hear!

Submitted(+1)

These were incredibly good! You were right in that the real drums really ground everything together!

Developer

Thank you so much!!

Submitted(+1)

Interesting mix of chiptune and contemporary instrumentation! Works well together and I respect the balancing act; I never felt as though one side was dominating the other - at least, not without it being intentional! Great use of stereo-space and cheeky pitch bends and modulation in Perennial Bloom in particular.

Mountain Purple comes in swinging with a very different vibe; I like the continuous progressive build up until the 3/4 mark before it kicks in hard again. Plogue was a fantastic choice of VST and you're really putting it to good use here.

Great work.

Developer

Thank you so much! It's so nice reading these lovely comments, I'm over the moon by them.
