Description
This is an orchestral/acoustic soundtrack for an imaginary video game set in the world of Starfrost. Together a young prince and his warm, glowing friend must traverse the four seasonal realms helping to bring life back to the people and land after the cold-hearted Permafrost took it all away. They can hardly anticipate the twists that they will encounter along the way. I created this soundtrack with Garageband using mostly Spitfire Labs VST instruments using a keyboard midi controller. I had a great time creating this story with each new track that seeks to encapsulate the exact emotions of each given moment. Please enjoy my original soundtrack, Starfrost!

Track 1: In the land of Starfrost, a young prince befriended a glowing ball of light named Sunny. Together they spent the days enjoying the peaceful times in the world and the vitality of the Spring Lowland realm in which they live.

Track 2: The four realms of Starfrost include Spring Lowlands, Summer Plateau, Autumn Valley, and Winter Summit. Each realm has its own unique culture and is governed by a monarch that watch over the realm: the good Spring queen April to the South, the jovial Summer empress June to the West, the wise Autumn lord Augustus to the East, and the cold-hearted tyrant Permafrost alone in the mountains of the North.

Track 3: The young prince and Sunny begin their adventure in the Spring Lowlands where they run through town and greet the villagers throughout the town’s various shops and buildings. This adaptive track varies based on whether they are outside or inside. The bird sounds were recorded on a trip I took to Zambia.

Track 4: At the end of every harvest season, the people of Starfrost gather and celebrate. Everyone attends the festival every year except for Permafrost, who most people have never even seen. This year seemed to be no different and the dancing and festivities continued late into the night.

Track 5: With a rushing wind and a clap of thunder, the torchlight faded and a haunting laughter echoed from a large figure who emerged from the trees. It was Permafrost. With his hand outstretched, a blue light flashed. Then the laughter faded away and everything went dark.

Track 6: The young prince awoke to a warm touch from Sunny. Looking around, they noticed they were back in the Spring Lowlands, but the greenery had faded to gray and brown. Exploring, they noticed that other people were scattered, but they were frozen and lifeless. With Sunny’s warm glowing touch, they were able to revitalize each person they came across as well as the plant-life around them.

Track 7: When they approach the borders of the Spring Lowlands, they see smoke and notice a raging wildfire guarded by a fiery beast that engages them in combat. With Sunny's help, the young prince is able to defeat the creature.

Track 8: With the beast vanquished, they find the prince’s mother, the queen, and Sunny helps revitalize her. She bestows upon them an ancient artifact. When Sunny is presented with the artifact, he glows a bright pink and seems to radiate a little warmer. With the wildfire put out, they are able to proceed to help the rest of the people and wildlife of Starfrost.

Track 9: They next visit Summer Plateau where a tornado rages across the land and they must defeat the creature wielding the gailing force to find the empress. When she is eventually revitalized, she too bestows them with an artifact which causes Sunny to glow a bright green and the winds then stop.

Track 10: To get to Autumn Valley, they must cross a wide river. Luckily the old boatman was found and in exchange for revitalizing him, he agreed to ferry them across whenever they needed.

Track 11: In Autumn Valley, the land is plagued by a swampy flood and a vile creature who lurks in the flooded forest of falling leaves. When they defeat the creature, they are able to find lord Augustus. His artifact given to Sunny and the prince causes Sunny to glow bright orange and subsequently causes the rising waters to fall, opening the pathway northward.

Track 12: In the North the mountain is steep and icy. They are able to make their way up the cliffside through the blizzard and when they reach the peak, they find a cave that is surprisingly warm. This track adapts to both the blizzard and the cave environment.

Track 13: In the cave, they find Permafrost who incredulously threatens them and in a crazed manner engages them in battle. With the artifacts from the other realms, Sunny is much stronger and is able to defend against Permafrost’s powers. After a grueling duel, a flash of blue light is cast toward the prince, but Sunny dashes in front to take the entire blow. Both Permafrost and Sunny shriek and collapse.

Track 14: Wounded but determined, Sunny floats over to Permafrost and gives him the same warm touch that revitalized so many others. In a flash of brilliant blue light, Sunny was gone and Permafrost was left with a new warm glow. He looked at the young prince as if remembering something long lost - something happy. Sunny was a part of himself that he had lost; Sunny was his inner warmth. He suddenly remembered being a young prince once long ago too, before the changing of the seasons.

Track 15: With Permafrost reunited with Sunny, he remembered that he was once called Starfrost and joined the young prince to continue revitalizing the world and making sure that peace resumed and remained. Even moving into the cold season, the land of Starfrost seemed to be warmer than the prince had ever remembered. Though he was sad that his friend was no longer here, the prince knew that Sunny wasn’t gone. His glow was still present, a warmth strong enough to touch and change even the coldest of hearts.

Theme:

Story of Seasons

How does it fit the theme?
In a literal sense, the world of Starfrost is made up of four realms based on the four seasons of the year with aspects of the story and each culture related specifically to each season. On a different level, what we learn from and about the characters in this journey is that we see life pass like the seasons. From the aged winter comes new life in the young protagonist. Also, throughout the soundtrack, I specifically selected instruments with a color and timbre that relate to each season they signify respectively (i.e. warm guitar for summer, tremolo strings for winter, etc.). The leitmotifs used also mimic the rises and falls and the ever-cycling seasonal shifts that occur with the changing of the seasons. This is, through and through, a story of seasons.

It's amazing you were able to get all this done in just 10 days. You'd think compromises would have to be made with this many songs, however, each track feels like it has the same amount of care put into it. I also really appreciate the amount of depth you put into the story behind each song. Really impressive submission. Great job!

Track I: this track really eminates such warmth and radiance with the low string chords and the folk-like melody. It's both simple and heroic-- LOVE that ending!

Track 2: ahh--- something about menu music is so charming. The mandolin is so gorgeous and reminiscent...

Track 3: I was so tempted to add ambient nature sounds to my music too-- it's a wonderful effect here! Something about the harmony in the guitar gives this track a medieval tinge. The shift to the inside music was absolutely brilliant! Dynamic orchestration hits some certain buttons in me...

Track 4: Lovely opening guitar cadenza! This piece and the previous one definitely gave the music a medieval vibe.

Track 5: YES WITH THE STRING CLUSTERS THEY SOUND SO GOOD!! A part of me wishes the intensity ramped up even more for this section. Adding a little bit more chaos would spice this track up nicely.

Track 6: Brilliant use of the piano here to add intimacy and iciness. The electronics definitely add to the feeling of iciness too. My recommendation for this track and the above one: consider playing around with tempo/time a bit, and be more adventurous! This track could have been even more stale, icy, and atmospheric if it was less steady rhythmically.

Track 7: excellent battle music, the strumming percussion definitely kept the drive going :) the offbeat brass chords were so cool too. Gives me Skyrim energy :)

Track 8: Since there's so many more submissions to listen to, I'm going to stop here-- but I have to say, you've created and explored so many beautiful colors and emotions here. This is a lovely soundtrack and you really made the most of your tools. I recommend only that you experiment with breaking out of the barline here and there-- it really makes a track stand out. Keep up the exceptional work!

Great work and great sounds!

Music here is well composed and instrumentation was great. Great use of leit motif as well. Overall, the songs paint a coherent picture.

Wow that's a lot of music! And it's all great! Your selection of instruments across the tracks are fantastic, it supports the feel of distinct identities between them quite well. The fullness of orchestration for every track is thoroughly impressive. Absolutely wonderful job, I love it!

I finally got to listen to this front to back. Every time I started I got interrupted, so I've heard some of the tracks like 5 times lol. My favorites are: Spring Lowlands, it makes me feel like a child again. I really like your use of instruments here, it's charming and comforting. It makes me feel like exploring a town at my own pace, taking in the little moments, talking to each of the town's folk, and finding all the secret treasure in the corners. Barren lowlands is also another stand out track to me, I really feel the emptiness of the scene you set up here. Revitalization is so comforting. I feel cozy! And lastly Summer's Plateau, this track makes me smile so freaking big. I can feel the sun scatter across my face and smell the breeze. I am so impressed with the amount of time and effort you put into sculpting this world. Also, glad I came across someone else who used the Erhu, so good! Absolutely killed it. Well done.

What a fantastic job! The tracks seem to tell a completely immersive story. First I listened to them without the context, then I went back to read the story behind each track and it was a new experience. The soundtrack is very cohesive, I don't know how you got the time you needed for all this work without giving up on quality! Congratulations!

This is some solid orchestral music and a great testament that you don't need expensive software to make good music, but there are times where your limits show. Overall this is really good, I'm impressed at the quantity as well!

Wow. This is a LOT of music, and excellent music at that! Great job. I especially like the boss tracks. Like some have said below, they're very triumphant, and they feature some really great melodies that bring to mind some of the best RPGs around.

The ambient tracks aren't any less impressive though. Regarding those, I really like that you've gone with a more folkish/traditional and intimate vibe. The melodies and progressions being so exposed really helped set the mood you were looking for, and make the soundtrack stand out from  many of its contemporaries.

If I have one very slight criticism though, it'd be one echoed by another person. I'm a longtime user of LABS, and I really appreciate what Spitfire's done with them. I also did really enjoy what you have done with those small libraries, as everything does sound great. However, here and there they will sound slightly midi.

Overall, amazing job. I can definitely see myself listening to your songs again.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback! I appreciate you noticing the intimate feeling I was going for in the ambient tracks. I also greatly appreciate your comments about the boss tracks, especially since these are the first two boss tracks I've ever written! Thank you for the feedback on Labs. I suppose a lot of it is about perspective. Compared to the midi sounds that I was using previously, Labs sounded amazing to me. Now I know that there are even better quality VSTs out there that would help my music improve even more!

Great opening: really feels epic, and everything is so well orchestrated, and just feels so polished and professional. The main theme used here and in the finale has such a lovely, memorable and catchy feel to it. I love the use of the acoustic guitar and subtle background ambience, feels really immersive to the setting described in story, and I love the playfulness of the indoor hometown theme. I really like the story arc that follows through Harvest Festival to Barren fields, I can really feel and visualise what is happening here in the game. I do like a good climactic boss battle and Natural Disaster really delivers for me. I also like how Eternal Permafrost has a more steady build up and synth baseline and high hat that drives the music forward. Love the Erhu in crossing the river ... I think this is my favourite track. If I had to think of anything critical to say, I'd say there's something a bit funny about the sound of the crash cymbal used throughout: it sort of sounds a bit lofi like a sample from A Link to the Past in the title theme, but could just be my ears :)

There's just so much packed into this soundtrack: I'm just amazed how you can manage to get this all down pat in a week! I can really imagine this playing alongside a full-scale epic adventure game, awesome work! omg I'm still humming that main theme in my head :)

Developer

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply and for listening carefully to each track! The erhu served me quite well in this soundtrack and really helped create scenery through the music; I'm glad you noticed that! Thanks for the feedback about cymbal- I chose to use an inverted China cymbal for the higher frequencies than a normal crash to immitate a thunder clap, but I'll keep that in mind the next time I go for this type of music. I'm always trying to learn how to better choose instrument combinations in my music so I really appreciate you picking out that detail! Calling my music epic is a huge compliment and I am greatly appreciative of the time you took to write this comment!

What a journey! This is truly a soundtrack to a fully fledged game. I can picture exploring each area and the danger associated with some. I think your composing skills really shine under the constraints you have with just using spitfire's free products - but honestly you've taught me there's a lot more you can do with LABS than I thought!

Natural Disaster reminds me of some songs from the Ace Combat sountracks. Summer Plateau is probably my favorite for the beautiful melodies. And I must shoutout Eternal Permafrost because I love boss themes with lush chords and sweet melodies. It's very triumphant.

Great job dude! This is an epic soundtrack!

Thank you for your comment! I really pushed my capabilities and I suppose I tried to also push the capabilities of the tools I was working with too. Describing my work as epic is such a huge compliment. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my work!

The amount of material you made is impressive, but i think what is especially humbling is the fact you only used Garage Band and LABS, some of the pieces are suffering a bit from that, but honestly there is heart and we can feel the intention behind the composition

I can't wait to hear what you can do with upgraded software :)
Great job ^^

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your feedback! I did the best I could with what I have. I hope to be able to upgrade soon!

Excellent work doing such an extensive amount of work for this soundtrack. 15 tracks and a story for each track? Impressive. If you had someone do illustrations for each track you could have a whole audio/visual story told in music and slides. A sort of multimedia comic book.

Developer(+1)

That would be a really cool idea! I really immersed myself in this story for the week so seeing something like that come to fruition would be a magical feeling.
