Ooh, I adore the look and feel of this fun little romp! The pixel art really hits home with the nostalgia feeling, which in turn make the possibilites of h scenes in this and future builds pretty exciting and heart-beatingly great to look forward to 😊💖

I agree with the notion of Edmond being pretty OP and having an unnaturally great sense in knowing where Sara is hiding - I adore this for the NTR theme of the game and making the scenarios with him easier to access, but on a gameplay sense it makes it quite hard to reach her first before one figures out the pattern of his behaviour (if someone's struggling, try to follow his general direction and base your decision where to go next by the hints the crystal gives while Edmont is searching rooms!). Being as dominant as he is in this build, it is indeed quite hard to obtain the Guards scene as those move and act more freely without this magical sixth sense.

The theme is met in strides, the presentation is awesome and the gameplay loop and rewards in form of scenes can invite for many quick rounds, way to go on such a sweet game! I'll be happily looking forward to see updates and more iterations to fleshen out the overall experience 😁

Thanks for the feedback! I've been thinking about how to balance Edmond's AI, and one thing I'm now considering is having him act like a normal seeker at first, but then start cheating later on. Changes to the crystal can also help too - I'm thinking of making it not use up your turn anymore.

You're welcome! :D

Your proposal for the Edmond AI sounds like a nice compromise!
In regards to the crystal, I do slightly favor using the crystal taking up a turn, as a risk-reward aspect of always checking before going vs. going through the mansion blind and scout sparingly :)

However you might decide, I'm happy to give the game another go :D

Unfortunately even after reading the rules several times and going through comments in this page I still didn’t figure out how to play this game, so unfortunately not able to rate it.

Apart from that - art style is amazing, the story seems to be really fun and the gameplay idea is interesting. The first thing I’d really appreciate is more useful crystal - because wherever the position is it always says “dim light”, only on top of the target room “shines brightly” (thus wasting one turn instead of searching the room) and searching blindly apparently makes no sense and isn’t fun :) I’m not even sure if other contestants are needed in the game (especially as they’re cheating, as mentioned below :)) apart from being participants of the story - I mean a game like Fox Hunt could be really cool, just going for highscore - find the princess in least amount of turns (or have different events based on the amount of clicks - against static thresholds, not against unpredictable cheating AI).

Thanks for the comment! Sorry to hear that the game was confusing! I can see how it's a bit unconventional on how you're able to play.

You have a good point about the information the player gets from the crystal. Having the "shines brightly" message only for the target room probably makes more sense if it didn't take up your turn, which I'm considering doing.

Other characters are definitely crucial to the story, but maybe I could also add a way for the player to interact with them on a gameplay level, like misleading them for example.

While playing, I realized that Edmond clearly has cheats activated lol. Now, reading the comments, is when I realize it wasn't just me XD. Anyway, I love the artistic style of the game, I adore pixel art. Also, the gameplay is quite intriguing, and I love the twist you've given to the classic hide-and-seek. I really enjoyed your game. Great job! It truly feels like you've put a lot of time into this project. Hopefully, you had fun in this Game Jam!

Thanks for playing! I found this jam and saw the theme, and then immediately knew that it was a perfect fit for the themes I want to explore, and although I did not finish everything I wanted, the jam did help in coming up with a smaller scoped game for me to work on.

Beautiful pixelart. The gameplay loop gets a bit repetitive after a while and I get the feeling that the prince cheats.  But he let me win that one time at least.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! The game does get stale eventually since there are no endings right now and no reward for winning yet, and yes, Edmond does cheat and knows what path to take. I wanted that difficulty at some point at least to make it hard to avoid the NTR events, but it happens too early in the game and too strongly. In a future update, I'm thinking of having him start off with easier AI, and later on start cheating as the game's story progresses.

After the first two rounds I figure I'd just follow Edmund!! 😭 It also managed to give me that NTR vibe a few times.

I really like the art style and how the controls are done, it felt like a genuine retro game. Reminds me of a console I had called a fun station.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the comment! I was aiming for a classic retro style for this game, something like the NES with its small resolution and colors.

And yes, as you might've noticed, Edmond's AI cheats in the game. He is the host after all, so it's part of the story's NTR themes I was aiming for, but it could be better balanced.

It took me 31 turns to finally find Sara lol. I think the turn speed could probably be increased and I'm not so sure about the locate function taking up a whole turn. The art was really REALLY well done though! Like the other commenter below I didn't get the guards scene but that was a very unique and interesting take on the jam, I loved it!

Developer

That's a lot of turns, more than I was expecting! I was also debating whether the locate action should take up a turn or not. If it doesn't, the player never has a reason not to use it every turn, so searching gets easier. If it does, you have to think more carefully about when to use it, making it harder to win but easier to trigger events.

I can speed up the turns and messages, or even have a skip function and a log of everyone's actions too, to make the game more friendly in keeping track of everything. Thanks for the feedback!

Very interesting gameplay, but I think Edmond always knows where is Sara, and I coudnt see guard + sara cutscene

Developer

Thanks for playing! Edmond's AI does actually cheat and knows where Sara is, so I tried to at least force him to search rooms after moving, but maybe that still isn't balanced enough.

The guards scene wasn't completely finished for the jam, so it's just dialogue right now. They do move randomly, so their scene is harder to get.
