I sunk a lot of time into this one. At first I had no idea how to play and the controls were quite annoying to get used to, a tutorial level would've been nice to get the player used to the controls. Also I understand you wanted to limit the player speed to match the enemy but when it comes to AI opponents the player definitely needs some sort of handicap. An AI barely needs any time to think of what their action would be, while a human player needs a lot more time and I don't think 2.5 seconds is long enough for the player to have a good chance of defeating the enemy. But I did have a lot of fun shifting my pawns about.

Developer

thanks for the feedback! the 2.5 seconds thing worked for me lol... I tried to balance it out by letting the player move lots of troops at the same time, but I've got the movement complaint a lot. Tbh in a game jam it would have been hard to do much elsend make it in any way balanced. I might post a update to the game once the jam is over improving movement. I get what you're saying about a tutorial: I kinda just assumed the risk-style movement would make sense to people. Ig the way i transitioned it wasn't the best. Anyways, it's good that you enjoyed at least some of the game!

I couldn't really wrap my head around this one.  I found the controlls too awkward to keep up with the AI.  And, I'd recommend removing the RNG on complete defeat.  It can be really confusing and fustrating to lose 8 to 1.  Losing troops would be understandable, but losing the whole square feels unfun. I do, however, like the idea of a fast past army management game.

Nice idea, The music fits the game very well and the main menu UI looks good. more background and art could have made it feel more distinct and I think you need to give the player more time to react
(at list at the first levels, to get a hang of the controls and the mechanics). Overall I liked it :) Well done.

thanks!

I think my only complaint is the movement, Though I am not sure what you could have done differently. Maybe if you move a troop the selected square becomes ontop of the troops that you moved. Also seeing the computer move sets of troops in a line while I was unable to was a bit annoying.

Other than that, the gameplay was fun, I enjoyed the unique playstyle of it

Cool game! But i'm just wondering, why do some troops disappear even though it has more troops than the ones they are attacking?

Developer

combat is decided by a dice roll, so you can loose even if you have more troops. Every (rounded) 5 troops provides one dice. The looser looses the difference between the dice or something like that - I can't fully remember the exact equation

The gameplay is rather simple, with very little thought having to be put into what move to do, but is quite original, and I haven't seen anything like it in the jam! There's potential here, it just needs a little more complexity, in my opinion. Well done!

It's a fun game! I think it might've been better as a turn-based game, as moving troops can be very slow and sometimes just frustrating.

Developer(+1)

yeah, I've been getting that a lot. The truth is, it was just the easiest way to code it - I wouldn't have been able to do turn-based in 2 days. I'm probably gonna make a patch which allows you to move multiple provinces away in the same way the AI does

Moving troops was a bit of a pain, but other than that great game!

The movement system didn't feel to good because of the mouse. Maybe use wasd and keep the shift and ctrl thing. Overall a good game.

Developer

thanks for the feedback! The movement was trying to limit player speed in line with the enemy... Also, WASD would have been harder to do. I get what you're saying tho

haha, no problem :D
