How does your game fit the Magical Girl Genre?
The playable character is a mahou shoujo. In game she uses a couple of spells. Her design is based on the typical mahou shoujo outfit. Lore wise she would be part of a group of magical girls whose outfit mainly differ in color, like bishou Senshi sailor moon. Though due to time constraints none of that really appears in game.

Which theme(s) do you pick?
Sweet, Sadistic

How does your game fit those theme(s)?
The Enemies are sweets. The way to earn money is by overkilling enemies.

Were the assets for your game made during the jam? Elaborate as you see fit.

Love the music choices. I liked the defense concept though I was upset that as the game went on there was never any window to go buy upgrades with the size of the waves and the inability to deal with them all at once efficiently enough. Was a little tricky to make the fireball motion work, which is unfortunate considering spamming it seems to be the only way to win. In a more fleshed out game I would hope the tech would perform a roles that are sidegrades to the main combo rather than nearly obsoleting it.  Really liked all the moves though, they were quite satisfying to do. Took me several tries but just baaaarely won the game in the end. Good work!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback . Yeah I guess my own familiarity with this input worked against me. The techs aren't meant to replace the main combo, however it isn't obvious from just playing the game so I need to work on that.

Really cute magical girl design! The animations were well done too, in particular the duck/crouch animation felt very satisfying. The sound effects were also timed very well and made the punches feel like they had some power behind them. Good job!

Developer

Hey thanks for playing. I'm glad you liked it.

Really great art, impressive that it was done during the jam's duration, and the music fits pretty well! More of a fighting girl combat-wise, but frilly dresses and sweet enemies do fit the magical girl theme pretty well. Mechanics wise,  good beat em up, although a defeated animation/sprite would've been nice though considering how the character has a bunch of unique animations for her combos but when HP reaches zero it's just an instant blackout. Also feel like there could've been some dialogue/talk as well, although that seems a common theme among many of this jams entries hahaha...

Developer

Thanks for playing and reviewing. I'm glad you like the art but it unfortunately was the culprit why I couldn't get a nice polish on the game itself. Will definetely consider your points for the next time.

Host

Art is real good; really love her design. Also enjoyed the sweet invasion theme XD

Perhaps with more time the graphics and gameplay can be more polished -- with game graphics that are on par with the menu art and gameplay that is a bit... more balanced. Perhaps more spells. As it is now it is harder than getting a Normal 1cc on Touhou games.

Thanks for participating!

Developer

Hey, thanks for playing. I'll have to look back at the balance, but getting the art up to par is going to be difficult for a jam.

Whew, this one was really hard! I'm not sure if it has an end, but I kept losing when a swarm of ice cream cones were rushing at me.

That last sentence brings a smile to my face. I really enjoyed the fun/silly setting with evil candy and sweets invading. The art and animation is all really good! I love the character's design, which doesn't surprise me because you always come up with great magical girl designs.

The gameplay was pretty fun, but a little repetitive.  I didn't even realize what the techs were until reading other comments here. I went back and played a few more times, but found that I did WORSE using the techs.... this is probably more on me, and my lack of skill.... but the time wasted trying to nail the inputs and then often missing cost me when I could have just been spamming the basic combo.

Overall, this is a really great entry! Some of my favorite art this jam of far, and a fun concept all around.

I thought I replied to this but apparently not.
Thanks for the review. The ice cream cone part is only beatable with tech usage but yeah looking back I should have made the input easier.

I wasn't expecting a side view defensive brawler, but here it is. Punching things is pretty fun, with strong animations. The hit detection isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. The choice of sweets as enemies is an odd one, but stands out in a crowd of ambiguous dark monster things. The upbeat jazzy music, too, is a great choice. The key art drew me in immediately and the cute, brightly coloured ingame art lives up to the expectations that sets.

I never really understood what buying "tech" meant or how to use the abilities. Was that what the arrows in the middle of the screen were for? I thought for a while this was just indicating where enemies were coming from. In general, I think the game could be signposted better. It's not super clear that you take damage by enemies reaching the right side of the the screen, either.

I made it to wave 6 before getting overwhelmed. The cotton candy monsters are real tanks! To be honest, it was getting repetitive by that point. Punch, punch, power attack, repeat ad nauseum. I'm not really sure what could be done about this. There are already abilities that shake things up a bit.

Overall, this one didn't have a lot of lasting appeal for me, but it was fun while it lasted, and I love the art and magical girl design.

Developer

Thanks for playing.

Tech are special moves entered by pressing the arrow keys in a certain order. It's the same kind of input like in fighting games, except it ignores direction.

But, yes I should probably have explained that in game.

Originally I wanted the Enemies to react differently to each tech forcing the player to adapt their fighting style to each situation, but I ran out of time.

This was pretty fun. Thought the fighting game like inputs were a neat inclusion, and they were easy enough to input consistently. I think having some more different attacks would be helpful to deal with the different types of enemies. I didn't end up using  the Down-Down-Attack move very often since launching enemies in the air didn't seem very helpful, but a slower attack that did more damage would be useful for the enemies like the lollipops (would probably make the final boss too easy though, so that may not be a good idea anyways).

Art and animations were very nice, liked the designs and everything. Would like to see some of the designs that you had in mind with more time.

Thanks for playing.

Sure, I can show some designs I had in mind.

These are very cute! Thanks for sharing!

Really beutiful design!

The gameplay is fighter-like which is pretty cool itself, I also like the "tech" upgrade, even through after first upgrade it become less useful. All the animations and graphics are really great without a doubt. Music is cool too.

I've noticed some things you could upgrade through; like the time counter, I think it should be a little higher, On controls there is written that "Y" is attack, so it took me a while to realise it is "Z" button that makes you attack (don't know if it is a mistake or I'm just dumb), the enemies also ave more hp after time (right?) which can make them really hard to destroy.

Lolipops are OP through.

Developer

Definetely a mistake. I use a QWERTZ keyboard, but I should have labeled it like a QWERTY keyboard.

Yes, enemies do grow stronger in time. I'll look to balance out the enemies better.

Thanks for reviewing.

your character designs are always cute. the music is a choice, quite funky. the fighting combine seems working quite well. i can easily trigger special move. The game is quite repeative after a while. i guess the strategy is stand & fight. use empty time to upgrade, and then stand & fight?

this game has potential

Developer

Yeah, that' s basically it.

i like the art, the colors, i didnt understand very well the mechanics, but i liked the concept

Thanks for playing. I might have to build in a small tutorial. Timewise it didn't fit though.
