Did you work in a team?
I went solo (as I normally do in jams) because my available time is typically unpredictable so working with a team is difficult.

Was the resolution a challenge?
Communicating the state of the world without a bunch of text was a bit difficult. I don't think I communicated the objective of the game as well as I could have.

What did you learn?
I've never made a platformer before, so wanted to give that a try. I also put a lot more effort into art for this jam, as it's something I'm trying to improve on, and I feel like the result is generally a good improvement.

The wee vampire was NOT in safe hands—I did my best but I just couldn't feed the dark altar fast enough. Shame, because the character sprite is absolutely delightful—I love that little *forward jump* frame.

The game took a while to understand what I had to do, wasn't aware the essense was thing I had to collect after killing the enemies then had to bring to the altar to deal with the sunlight but not bad once that was figured out.

This is great! Cool concept, adds time pressure and constant incentive for the player to kill things and keep moving. Enjoyed the vampire vibes

Thanks so much!

Enjoyed playing the game. Music added to the atmosphere nicely. Took me a bit to get the jumping right, but then got it. Well done on the entry.

Developer

I had planned to make the jump relative to how long you hold the button, but had no idea what I was doing, so naturally I ran out of time 😅
Thanks for playing!

Totally understand running out of time. You might find this tutorial on character movement helpful (I know did).

This looks like a nice tutorial, thanks for the link!

I'd like if you added a time counter, so that the player knows how long they have already survived. And it would be even better if you added saving the best time and showing it on the main screen. Your game is well done. I like the essences flying away. This game is quite creepy!

Developer

I think it would give the player something to aim for. Hopefully I can add that after the jam ends.
Thanks for playing my game and love the idea!

Nice little platformer, lacks a bit of contrast in terms of identifying relevant elements in the game (f.e. the essence dropped is not visually obvious as a pick-up) so maybe a bit more context information is needed to understand what you are suposed to do.

Good control response and the physics on the shooting with the pushback are quite good. Shows a small jittering while moving horizontally, not sure if intentional, but looks a bit off.

Overall a nice game, and a very recognizable vampire character ;)

Developer

Yeah, I had to clamp the position of the camera to prevent jitter, but I added parallax right at the end and don't think I properly clamped those layers so it is pretty jittery.
Looking at it now, I think if I made the essence a more purple color it probably would have fixed a lot of the color merging issues.
Thanks for playing, and really appreciate the feedback!

when just 1 px is close to 2% of the playing area jittering is hell :P took me a while to fix all the jittering issues when adjusting camera position as well, so I can feel your pain. Palette and color contrasts are hard to master… I’d suggest you go dire and try… sometimes it is quite surprising finding out which color clashes do really work :)

It was nice and felt good, was a bit jittery, and i noticed some of the ui elements were similar colors to the background. Shooting felt nice but i didn't understand what the altars do. Overall very nice!

Thanks for playing. I didn't explain it very well, and didn't have time to add a tutorial, but basically the enemies drop little essence that you can pick up to fill your flask. Then you can go to an altar and right click or press E to make an offfering of essence to push back the rising of the sun.

It was really satisfying jumping around and shooting in this! Felt nice to play!
