This is a really clever game. I don't think I've ever played a sliding type game that involved progressing between areas before, it's a neat idea! I thought the turtle in particular was a really neat addition that opened up a whole bunch of puzzle opportunities. I wasn't able to finish it, since I couldnt figure out how to get both the turtle and the player into the right spots to get through to the gated area, but I still had fun!

Developer

I'm planning to work on the game a bit after the Jam ends, and create a section for the turtle (block the path coming in, go through an ancient ruin with pressure plates to get back out), and mark the spots where you can use the turtle because the turtle was the part people are having trouble with.

To the gated area? You might have gone too far if you tried going to the gate, the intended spot is in the first area above where you see the farm (there are four paths connecting that area but the path leading right can only be accessed using the turtle). It's also possible to get through the area where you eat the sheep using the turtle. And you can press T to flip the turtle over so it stays in place if you need to reposition the dragon. If you need more help on how to progress just ask!

The last section that you missed is where you get to destroy human farms and villages, and the gate you saw at the top of the map leads into the city where you get a boss fight against the Hero...

Overall super solid game! Ice slide puzzles in pokemon were my fav so I was happy to play a game jam-packed with the mechanic ^^

If I had to be nitpicky I'd say the turtle mechanic was a little confusing to understand/get used to but I was able to get the hang of it right towards the end

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your comment! Did you beat the whole game?

And yes the Turtle bit is the part most people have pointed out, and it was even more confusing before I updated it earlier. I was considering adding a "mark" in the shape of a turtle shell at the location where you should go so that the puzzle is more "how to get there" rather than "and now what?". Do you think adding such a mark to the tile would have helped with your confusion?

Submitted(+1)

Yup beat the whole game!

I think the thing that confused me was knowing the turtle was flippable even when I wasn't interacting next to it, maybe having "T" appear on the UI while the turtle is on screen could help. Overall it wasn't that I was confused on where I had to use the turtle but rather the mechanic of it wasn't introduced fully to understand how to consistently use it to your advantage.

Really enjoyed this one take on the sliding puzzle game, graphics and music work well togheter to fit the style and there are some elements that (for me and relative to the genre) are new and original. Would definitely reccomend playing it!

Nice graphics and sound with a fun puzzle mechanic. I did find the challenges a bit tough, but manageable. Nice job!

Not what I was expecting for this jam, but glad you made it all the same!

Loved the art, music and concept and the puzzles were all well designed (even if I never finished them all, puzzle games aren't my forte). The one thing I wondered, next time a mute music button would be great! I play games while watching movies etc, so that kind of user experience thing I try to implement.

Obviously not a game ruiner though, this is 2 week jam after all, so either way fantastic game, I just like to try and give feedback where possible!

Also I tried to glitch it by just spamming patterns of different buttons but nothing, good job on the movement!

Developer(+1)

Aha! I guess you didn't find the glitch where if you enter a new area spamming the movement keys the creatures that can move in that area will start moving before your character does setting everything out of sync (until you stand still long enough for everything to be still at the same time)...

Thanks for playing the game! Having a mute button for the music and one for the vfx was on my list but ended up on the chopping block as I didn't have the time to implement it. How far did you make it? I figured it would work for this jam as you get to destroy farms and villages and a whole city later on while playing as a giant monster haha.

Submitted(+1)

ah damn, I didn't make it quite that far but I'll come back later possibly to try it!

I loved the art direction and sound direction in this game! the music was super charming, the character was adorable and the puzzles were actually interesting! A great game overall!

Developer

Thanks for your positive message! Did you beat the whole game? I updated the game this morning before you played it to add some messages, like "too weak, eat more", so I am curious if there was any part that was confusing or unclear about what was expected from the player. What did you think about the final fight against the human hero in the city?

This is a link to the music I used here on itch.io if you want to use it as well, it's really nice indeed! https://xdeviruchi.itch.io/8-bit-fantasy-adventure-music-pack

I love sliding tile puzzles, so this game was right up my alley! I loved this one! The visuals and audio were both very nice and the challenge was certainly appreciated! It did end up taking me a good while to figure out where to use the turtle, but outside of that hiccup, I had a lot of fun!

Sorry for the spam, itch froze on me.

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! Well the turtle is the only real "cross-area" puzzle. Technically you can use the turtle at THREE(!) different spots to get into the human area haha. Since you like sliding puzzles were there any parts you didn't enjoy as much or were there any parts that stood out that you liked more?

Well, the only part of the game I had any issue with was the turtle, and that mostly came down to either not knowing where he should go or not knowing how to get him to a particular spot. The thing I did find interesting about this game was the use of multiple spawn points in a room being vital to solving each puzzle. At first I thought a few of these puzzles weren't possible, but finding out you keep your spot just outside where you enter a room and that the room doesn't reset made for some fun "Ah Ha!" moments. I don't know of any other tile sliders that use that.

tl;dr The turtle's usage felt a little vague. I liked that the puzzles weren't self contained and literally had you come at it from different angles.

Edit: My favorite room was probably the first giant bug room. That one has some clever movement.

Hi! I'm glad you enjoyed it, the Turtle part was confusing to more people, I changed the game before you played it I think so that he tells you if you aren't strong enough and need to eat more, and the "T to flip" instruction was hidden until after you flip him over the first time. Before this update it was very confusing what you were supposed to do. So I'm happy you only had a problem finding where to use him.

All the puzzles can be solved without dying, but resetting the progress on death would have required a lot of extra work and would probably have made it a lot more frustrating to progress. Though there are some puzzles where you need to leave the area to either reset the enemy position or enter from another entry point to get everything. I was inspired a bit by the world design in legend of zelda in that you "come back here later", like you get to see the city walls and gate pretty early, you also get to eat a wayward sheep before getting into the human area and you see a farm with some farmland as well that you get back to later to destroy. The purpose was to create anticipation through teasing future content.

While it took me a while to get used to the movement - I really liked how it worked. Will definitely revisit this one!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I just updated it with some much needed polish! Input buffer for more comfortable movement and a "too weak, eat more" message when trying to do things you can't do yet (like breaking the crate and flipping the turtle).

How far did you get into the game? Did you get stuck anywhere?

Submitted(+1)

I like the visuals, fun little puzzle concept. Game design for this puzzle definitely requires some thought given to it! I only ate one sheep, then couldn't figure out the rest of the puzzles. Still, it was a pretty unique concept.

Charming visuals and a unique interpretation of the kaiju theme.

I was impressed by the level of care and challenge that went into the puzzles :)

Great submission, good job! :)

Developer

Thank you so much! Did you manage to beat the whole game? Since I was the one that made the puzzles I don't really know how challenging they are to someone else, like the turtle/tortoise bit. What did you think of the final battle?

Submitted(+1)

I got to the point of moving around the turtle. I found the puzzles challenging and fun. I would have given it more time, but there are lots of games to play for the jam.

Developer(+1)

Alright, just let me know if you need any help. After the turtle bit you get to the humans and start destroying buildings and you get to fight the hero that killed mommy dragon in the intro cinematic. :P
