For a first game, it has quite some good ideas !
I really like the atmosphere and your use of lighting it really conveys the tension of being lost in a dark place not knowing what could come after you, the breathing mechanics are quite an original idea and well implemented with the theme.
Just one small isue to point out, your game's window seems to be a bit cropped on the page for the HTML version.
Other than that it's a solid entry with some good ideas, i feel only lacking a bit of polish for the character movement which seems a bit too fast if i had to nitpick but it's not that big of a deal.
Well done :)
Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad the breathing mechanics added to the atmosphere, I did feel like it might be a bit frustrating to have to stop and breathe every now and then so that's good to hear.
I noticed the window size too, I wasn't sure how to set up the window size properly when I uploaded the project, so it's definitely something to fix in the next jam.
I definitely agree that movement is a bit too quick – the idea was to have the player's movement speed change with the heart rate (the lower BPM = slower movement, higher BPM = faster movement) to help give the player the same sense of anxiety and panic the character would be feeling, but I think this definitely could have been clearer.
Thanks for checking it out :)
No problem :)
i think window size you can adjust on your itch.io project page where you can set a manual size.
Cool lighting of the game, liked the mechanic when you have to slow your heartbeat in order to continue as if it was your lifebar (which in real life kinda is xd), missed some audio effects in the sword or the monsters, but cool game :P
You're absolutely right, audio for the sword and monsters would have been a nice addition, I'll keep that in mind for next month! Thanks for checking it out :)
Congratulations on your first game. I love the breathing mechanic a lot, added quite a bit of challenge. Cheers.
Thank you! I'm surprised to hear the breathing mechanic was the biggest takeaway as it was quite a last minute addition, but glad to hear you liked it. Thanks again for helping with the reupload too
Loving the breathing mechanic! Such a neat way of controlling your heart beat! Well done :D
The breathing mechanic was a pretty last-minute addition to help with difficulty so I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking the time to check it out :)
I tried running it by extracting the PCK from the Mac version with 7z and using
godot --main-pack Heartbeat.pck
but it freezes after the splash screen due to missing resources.Did not expect anyone to go through that to try and play this, but top points for effort! The browser, Windows and Linux versions should be working now too if you wanted to give it another try :)
Tried it on mac. Spooky atmosphere. I really like the ambient music.
Thank you! Credit for the music goes to Philippe Groarke (https://opengameart.org/content/dark-ambiance)!
The HTML did not play. I downloaded the Linux file but it says: .pck file is missing. A shame really, as I was looking forward to playing it.
Congratulations on your first game!
The HTML and Linux versions should be fixed now if you'd like to give it another try! Thank you! :)
Nice!
I enjoyed the controlling the heartbeat while having to decide if I walk or not. Made it scary to face enemies especially without a sword.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I was worried that would seem tedious or frustrating so it's nice to hear it worked. Thanks for coming back to check it out!
didn't seem to want to play on browser for me :( (using Chrome 88.0.4324.182 (Official Build) (64-bit)). Might try to play the Windows version later or come back to see if the browser version is fixed. Congrats on your first game!
Both the browser and Windows versions should be fixed now if you'd like to have another try :) And thank you!
