I like the rhythm based combat idea. I think your game pulls it off really well. I used a similar idea in my game and in my opinion your rhythm input system feels much better than the one I was able to make... 😅

However, I did find that ultimately the combat system was hard to work with.

I think the primary reason for that is because attack direction is tied to movement direction. This means that if I am running from an enemy, I have to rather awkwardly turn around in order to attack it. The attack animation also freezes the player in place, which makes it even harder to attack and still be able to avoid the enemies.

I do think that tying the attack direction to movement direction is not necessarily a problem. I think more generally, the combination of all these factors:

  • Attack direction tied to movement direction
  •  Slow moving player
  •  Attack animation freezes player
  •  Short range of attack
  •  Large number of enemies
  •  Enemies move quickly

Causes the combat to be particularly difficult. I would recommend tweaking some of these factors in order to make the combat easier.

That said, there is an aspect of the combat I really like: it seems appropriate for a furnace to move slowly and somewhat awkwardly. Playing this game, it really feels like I'm playing as a furnace lumbering around a house. I think that it just needs room to breathe a little.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and for the feedback of attack. Glad you enjoyed it.

I agree that combat can be worked on and improved.

This is a cool concept! My combat skills are not great (I'm more of a tank type of player where I'm not so good at moving and not getting hit xD), but would be interesting to see where you take this after the jam.

Might be cool to have a little bit of the heartbeat mechanic built into the player character -- like lil tiny sparks on the beat, so it's a bit easier to time attacks if you're not super great at keeping a beat.

Developer

Thank you for playing, and that sounds like a good idea. Something on Flick that shows the beat so you don't have to rely on the bar in the corner.

Make sure you check out Mr.Bloo and Rosie for the art. They don't have Itch accounts so they can't see these comments.

Music and Art are awesome! The concept is very great. I really enjoyed playing it :)

Developer

Hey, thanks for the kind words about the music! I was the composer and sound designer, was a really fun game to make and I hope we can polish it up more soon! There are some great ideas that weren't implemented in time for the deadline. Definitely check out the programmers and artists, who are very talented!

The music and the main character animations are pretty great here. I liked the concept behind the combat too, but the attack felt pretty weak, and eventually I stopped using it altogether unless an enemy was directly in the way, and just focused on lighting candles. I did eventually manage to win, although it took quite a few tries.

Hats off to you for winning as well! That's amazing I still haven't managed

Developer

Thank you for playing! I agree that the combat could be improved. We do have other plans for blocking and counter-attacking, but we ran out of time to put them in before the jam ended. We'll definitely be working on that.

Also, make sure to check out Mr.Boo and Rosie, the artists behind this game. They don't have Itch accounts so they can't see these comments.

The concept is quite unique, but I found having to match my attacks to the beat more frustrating than anything else. I like that the beat is tied to the music, though.

Developer

Thanks for playing our game. I know it can be difficult to get use to, but we are going to work on it some more and smooth some things out. So anything that can help us make the game better would be great!

Submitted(+1)

Very nice game - like others have said I found the combat a little difficult, I think aiming mainly was my problem - but did like how the music was a cue to the beat, that was a nice touch. Loved the animation on the Flick/The Main Character.

Those pesky eyeballs kept getting me! grrrr

Good work :)

Developer

Thank you for playing. We had a couple of ideas on how to make the attacks smoother and even some other attacks, but the time got to us.

Make sure you check out James Foss, the brilliant composer behind the music. And also check out our artists, Mr.Bloo and Rosie. Our artists don't have accounts on here so they can't see these comments, but James does at least. Just scroll up and he should be there.

Developer

Hey, thanks for the feedback and kind words! I'm the composer and sound designer, it's the first rhythm-based game I've worked on so I am glad people have enjoyed the music. The programmers did an awesome job with the game mechanics as well, if we get the chance to polish it up and add everything we intended, and it could be a really cool game.

Nice work! I like the main character and atmosphere of the game. I find the rhythm/attack mechanic quite challenging, but I like the concept!

Thank you for playing. We're going to add some more to the game like more enemies and more attacks to the game after the jam is over.

Really nice design of the main character!

How did you pull of the attack mechanic?

Creative take on the theme!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for playing! The attack mechanic was done by checking how close your key press was to the beat timer. We also had 3 different speeds of the same song and we would fast-forward them to where they should be when the rhythm changes.

Also check out Mr.Bloo and Rosie for the art. They don't have itch accounts so they can't see these comments.

I was confused in the beginning.. expecting to be a flicker and see a sort of spider on the screen... then i read carefully... :D my fault...

nice game, good job bro!

Developer

Thank you for playing, and no worries. No spiders in this game... yet.

Pretty cool, i like the main character idea of moving around as a furnace armor for a fire spirit, and the flame's design on the cover art is really cute  :)

I'd just say the attack range feels a bit short, and it would help to have some indicators or a radar of sorts to help locate the enemies while you wander around the house to light the candles.

Other than that i liked it still, it's a cool concept with some nice artstyle.

Congrats to you guys !

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! We did have more plans for attacking such as counter-attacks and blocking, but we ran out of time. I do agree that the attack range should be more visible.

No problem the deadline speeds by pretty fast so i can totally understand not having all your planned features in :p

Too bad your artists can't see the comments but their work deserve the praise for sure :)

Good game! The atmosphere was really nice, felt spooky but not too spooky. Well done.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! I'm glad it wasn't too spooky, I can't take horror.

Developer(+1)

Hey velopman, thanks for playing the game! I was the composer and sound designer, and your description of "spooky but not too spooky" is the exact vibe the programmers asked me for :D I love those playful, cartoonish alien noises

Lovely game. The music was hauntingly beautiful and I really enjoyed the art, esp your cover image :) I found this really hard though, so i'm afraid I didn't get very far! Well done on your submission!

Thank you for playing! I know, it's pretty hard for me too.

Lovely music, and the main character is great! The sfx are a bit too loud tho.

Developer

Thank you for playing!

Glad you liked he music and the character. Thank you for the feedback. I do remember having the death sound be loud.

Developer

Thank you for playing, and I'm glad that you like the music.

Developer

Hey, thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed the game! I'm the composer and sound designer, thanks for your comments on the music! The SFX will be mixed better if we polish up the game, unfortunately I sent a couple of the sounds to the programmers too close to the deadline for careful implementation! If you're interested you can see other games/audiovisual projects I've worked on here: https://vimeo.com/user132445511 (or on my itch.io!)

I second the "miyazaki-vibe" comment.  Very nice atmosphere, visuals and sound. And I totally love the little guy :D

But I have to confess that I didn't make it very far, as I had a hard time getting the attack timing right. But I also suck at rhythm based tasks, so that's probably my fault.

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the compliment.

Our SFX guy, and artists did create a nice atmosphere for the game.

It does take a while to get used to attacking on the beat.

Developer

Thank you for playing, and don't worry. It was difficult for me as well.

Make sure you check out Mr.Boo and Rosie's art pages, they are amazing artists.
