How does your game fit the theme?
On the surface, the game fits the theme through literal rolling of a cube across a track being the main mechanic. Thematically though, the game has a random roll mechanic which allows players the option to switch up the orientation of the cube on tiles they otherwise wouldn't be able to, risking an instant loss for the chance to break the level.

There are too many games of this kind, but what I particularly like here is that 3 colours makes it much simpler, which makes it more playful.

Super similar to this game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/903630/The_Last_Cube/

Oh wow, this is like, Extreme-Sports Cube-Rolling, I'll take that as a compliment!

Fantastic! This is THE best "roll the die around and get the correct side facing up/down" game I've played so far (and there are a lot in this jam!). Most of the others used normal die numbers, which is very unintuitive. Using colors and starting with only two makes it far easier to keep track of. The gray spaces acting as little "safe zones" so you don't have to plan moves out across the entire level also help a lot.

Like some other people mentioned, being able to move the camera would be nice. Also being able to rotate the die on the 3rd axis during the jump rotate would be helpful - I know it's possible to manipulate the die the way you want it using the other two, but it'd be easier. Also, I guess you put in the "random roll" mechanic for the jam's theme, but I think it meets the theme perfectly fine without it. And the chance to just randomly get out of a jam feels like it doesn't quite fit in a puzzle game.

Developer

Thank you so much, this means a lot!

And you're pretty spot on with the random-roll mechanic. Interestingly enough, random rolling was originally going to be the only way you could change the cube's rotation, and let me tell you, that version of the game was... not fun. At this point, the random rolling is entirely optional, and really just there as a hail-Mary tactic for people who aren't as concerned with finding the "correct" solution (I'm a fan of people enjoying games their own way).

I'm still super interested in how randomization could be incorporated where it feels more integral to the process and adds to the fun rather than detracts from it. Hadn't quite cracked it by upload time; hence, this version where it is situational and non-essential.

Love it! Super puzzle could lose hours playing it

That's incredibly kind, I'm so glad you had fun!

Really fun to play! And also a really creative idea.

I wish you could move the camera around so you could see what side would land on when you moved around, but other than that this game is very amazing.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you had fun!

Def considered having an option to rotate the camera,  just didn't make the cut for time's sake.

So good! I loved it!

I even build this at the last level:

Omg, this is amazing, haha! Thank you so much for your kind words, it means a lot that you enjoyed it!

So far, from all the games I've played in the game jam, I enjoyed this game the most! Simple mechanics but they still manage to make the player think and strategize. But since I'm trash at puzzle games I got stuck on level 10, lol. Only problem with the game is the camera. I wish I could rotate the camera to see what color is on the other side of the dice.

Developer

That really means a lot, thank you so much! I worked hard to try to get the simplicity to strategy balance right, so I'm glad that came across well.

I agree that rotating the camera would help in solving the puzzles, and I almost put that functionality in there. I wondered if having to keep track of the sides should remain part of the challenge of the game, but you never want the difficulty to ultimately detract from player enjoyment, so this is great feedback to have!

Haven't seen the color thing yet in this kind of game. Very interesting.
The reroll thing kills me way too often. It is frustrating when you need it and it kills you.

Developer

Glad you thought so!

And very good to have the feedback that the rolling became frustrating for you. Exploring how to incorporate an element of randomness into a "traditional" puzzle game was the main challenge I gave myself in designing this, so I'm interested in how people do or don't interact with that feature.

Question for you, if you don't mind: Was it clear to you that all the levels could be solved without using the randomizing roll, or did you think you had to do that to clear certain levels?

Thanks!

Submitted

I realized that sometime later. But there are many situations where you can't go on without the reroll.  Those are (in hindsight) obviously not part of the real solution but "try to smuggle your way through the puzzle, maybe you die and have to start again" is a questionable message to send your players.

i really like the mechanic of rerolling, well done overall on this game!

Developer

Thank you so much, and I'm glad that you enjoyed that aspect, it's good to hear!
