This is a fun idea, and I don't think it's really too complicated, but the controls are a bit awkward and it's very difficult to aim at the space you want. Maybe use mouse control for stuff like that next time? I like how the music gets faster so it sounds more tense.

How does your game fit the theme?
You're constantly having to juggle between keeping the weeds in check, and growing your carrots to finish the level. The weeds very much do their own thing.

Hello! I played your game on stream! If you want to see your game played with live feedback, you can find the VOD and watch from this sheet: http://bit.ly/bean-stream
Thanks for giving it a look, I appreciate it.
As you mentioned, an interactive tutorial would have been pretty needed to make this game digestible without multiple sessions to play it. I wanted to add one, but ran out of time. If this was a 72 hour jam, it would have been the big day 3 addition.
I’m glad you appreciated the art for what it was, aka not great, but not terrible.
I can do better pixel art (though not quickly enough for a game jam). This art was from 3 artists, myself, my teammate, and my wife. She did the buildings and trees, @goomplez the tiles, and I did the stick man and the weeds. My art was mostly aimed to be servicable, and then I got too caught up in the programming to clean it up during the jam.
If you do give it a more proper try, I am interested in the pacing.
If you immediately go for weeds, you can get them under control quite easily, but then it seems to slow down the game too much. Overall, the pacing seems either too much or too little. If I were to spend more time on it, that’s probably the second issue I’d address, making the pacing a little more adaptive. Right now, the weeds do not care what the player does.
Very nice game! I liked the most the music which was getting faster with time. I also had a similar idea regarding weeds, but with a completely differrent approach. I would be glad if you'll chek it out.
So I saw this in a Twitch streamer's video, and having considered making a weed based game myself, I was wondering how this would be designed. I must say that it actually played better than I thought it would. The neatest design decision was to make the fertilizer come from the weeds -- it makes them a hazard that you can't just ignore, but need to keep in balance.
My first playthrough I was just trying to learn the controls, during which the weeds got everywhere fast. There was no recovering from that, so I reset.
My second playthrough I got to 13 carrots before being overtaken by weeds. It took me a bit to learn the mechanics, and the controls were somewhat confusing (I'm very glad those were on the screen the whole time, though I think there might have been a way to simplify them so you don't use three action buttons). I also noticed here that the music speed increased with the more weeds on screen, which was very effective at inducing anxiety.
But finally my third playthrough I was ready. I was doing remarkably well on these weeds, to the point where I really didn't have enough fertilizer to do anything. And then like usual, the weeds go outside the bounds of the farm, which is the point of no return and when chaos really begins. But I managed pretty well, and got all 25 carrots. It might have been nice to not have a message pop up over the screen obscuring my view while I tried to see how many carrots I could get (though it didn't really matter anyway, since 2 more carrots picked later, the weeds were everywhere and the game was lagging intensely).
Anyway, cool game, it was more fun than I expected.
It took me a minute to understand how the controls worked, but once I got it down I beat the game! Y'all did a great job! The music speed up was giving me anxiety at the end though!
I was not entirely sure what was going on but there were weeds everywhere, that was clear haha
Nice job! Similar to my idea on Overgrowth Valley, but a very different take :)
