I'm going to be contrarian here and say that I actually liked the controls, they reminded me of the RC Car from SMO, and I happen to be the one asshole who really like/is really good at the RC Car from SMO. I do think the turn speed could be tweaked a bit to make it easier to control, either that or the maps could be designed to handle turns the car can do rather than these really weird sharp turns you have going on, but the basis for solid mechanics is certainly there!
The game also looks good which is a plus! It has a cute style and I enjoy it a lot.
The SFX got a bit annoying though (more specifically the sound the car makes when accelerating), but I also have auditory sensitivities so it might just be related to that more than anything.
Overall great basis, but it does need some polish.
Finally someone appreciates the controls, I personally didn't like them at first too but they're actually quite fun to use after you get used to them (I will still be definitely adding controller support due to the negative feedback though)
Hi! Thanks for the game :) Here are my thoughts about it
Overall, as it has been stated, controls are a real issue. You asked what to do, I'd suggest implementing controller mapping first because it would fit really well, or check racing game to see what mapping they use. Always use references !
So yeah controls felt pretty terrible, and they were not helped by the camera and level design. It's hard to see where you're going since the camera is always focused on the car and the road is tight, at least for a beginning map, so you have to really improvise when turning left or right, and most of the time it will just not work. The arrows next to the road are, in my opinion, pretty much useless as in racing game, they're either shown in first person view because it's obviously harder to see the road, either to warn the player about a huge bend, which is more the case here, but they're definitely not shown with enough size or particles to put the emphasis on them. So I most of the time ended up colliding the arrows, which made me being soooooooo slow for long seconds, before getting back on the road. Or I ended up in the water and I was excepting it to make me respawn on the road just where I was, but no, I was teleported to the beginning, which felt frustrating.
The game also felt a bit boring because the AI just run away at the start, and at the first misplay, you just completely lose them and you end up being alone on the road. It's okay in a racing game to do mistakes, but what is fun is that you're playing against other car, colliding them, etc. being alone in such a game is very boring. And that's a shame because colliding other cars and speeding up is well made and fun ! So I wish the game helped me doing it a bit more :)
So maybe work on smaller maps, with AI cars being of different speeds, and what you can also do is slow them while they are far from the player, to help him reach them and feel like he can still do it. AI in games do not have to be realistic, they have to SEEM realistic, and you can tweak them in such ways to help the player.
About the art style, I'm not a huge fan of bloom for pixel art games, and it does not fit the day map in my opinion. Looks better during night but still, not really accurate I think. Otherwise this is good looking, everything's clear and the menu looks good though the texts are tilted a bit too much :p
And I think that's it ! I'd play again if you work on some improvements, and also keep in mind that racing games are not the games I play the most so maybe some of my feedback are not so valuable :p but those are my thoughts ! Still, congrats for making a working and polished game during this week !
Thanks for that absolutely massive amount of feedback! I was considering adding controller support because almost always games like this use controller but I just didn't have time to learn a whole new set of inputs for the jam but I already started adapting it to the post jam version. The map design suggestions were also very useful because this was one of my first times designing maps that aren't randomly generated, finally, about the post processing: I probably won't change it too much because I personally really like pixel art combined with more realistic effects because it adds a really nice vibe to the game in my opinion, kinda retro but at the same time modern but still thank your feedback and I will adjust the visuals a bit because of it.
This game is getting a surprisingly large amount of feedback and I appreciate all of it. The biggest issue it seems to have are the controls, so can someone tell me exactly what I should fix because I myself feel like the controls are quite flawed but I have NO IDEA how to actually fix it because top-down cars and keyboards don't mix well.
Fun game, but controls are pretty hard to control the car i spend more time in practice then playing XD
overall I like it!
Fun game for a jam. probably would have more control on the car, but it is still ok ^^
The main menu music is amazing, and the audio is very nice, I really couldn't control the car at all though, maybe I just suck but I think the car just accelerates way too fast from rest, you got alot going in though, there's a ton of options in your game which is great, good job!
Juicy game !! Visuals was epic and I found all the little details very nice. The only downfall for me were the controls but everything else was great!! The racer ai is actually good!!!
cool little racing game! the effect for crossing the finish line is very juicy.
You nailed the visuals part quite well, audio could've been better but was OK. It lags in my system, idk I have a problem or unity...
Some of the audio did also work strangely for me but I just didn't have time to fix it, could you please tell me what sound was lagging exactly?
I meant the game itself was lagging, I fixed it, turned out to be hardware acceleration restrictions in unity games
The visuals are amazing. Beautiful art, great audio and the boost effect is very nice. You got a lot done with the short time so credits to that. But I just can't control the car very well, the turning speed is a tad too much but maybe I'm just bad lol. Anyways good game, keep it up!
Very cool UI/graphics! Maybe a bit too much bloom/glow ?
there's no such thing as too much bloom (:<
