Soo... I may... have done a thing. A big thing. But let me start of by saying the first few nights/days were incredibly fun! So far this game has been the most *fun* out of the games that I have played. It's hilarious.

The graphics, sound, gameplay all worked well and was pretty simple in design. I did start to wonder if it got harder or not because I figured out a strategy that allowed me to fend off the wolves fairly well... And then the thing happened... What thing you ask?
Well... let me show you...

Also - I noticed around night 5 when I had like 50+ chickens and they were huddled the wolves lost accuracy on their ability to pick up a chicken. It was like they were going for a chicken in the middle of the group and hence they kept walking around chickens that are closer, into the middle of them all. And then they got stuck (like Wolfy).

BUT! Did that stop me? NO SIR! I kept going, till I got 150 chickens. Because nobody be taking my chickens away from me, ya hear me? NOBODY! xD hahaha

Seriously though, I was dying of laughter! This was awesome.
My suggestion would be to have the player not collide with chickens so I can pick up the eggs (helps with performance) and then have wolves find the chicken closest to them... And, possibly tweak the gameplay to scale up the wolf count each night.

Awesome job! :D

Developer

Wow, I never thought obtaining that many chickens was possible! I suspected it might be a problem later on if someone were to obtain that many, but we were never able to.

Thank you so much for the feedback! We were already planning to add difficulty scaling depending on the amount of nights the player survived, and now, thanks to your testing, we will fix the collision and enemy behavior so that future players won't run into this same situation!

Thank you again, and we're happy that you loved the game enough to play as long as you did! That's an achievement!

I did not get the full experience(because of problems with the mac build) which is not being able to use the mouse aiming system, so I had to rely on the arrow keys. Still, the game was very enjoyable and so much fun to play. This is the best 3D rendering I've seen yet in this jam, that means the art work was simply awesome. The music and sfx were pretty good.

Developer

Thank you again for attempting to build a mac version for us. Sadly, the code did not perform as intended when translating from windows to mac.
About the art, we can't take credit for most of it, as most of the assets were from the Unreal Marketplace and kenny's assets. The only 3D objects we built were the hammer and the egg.

I'm still very glad you enjoyed the game as much as you did!

Such a FUN game! Like CodemakrJon said, the music and graphics and gameplay all worked together! It was really really good. Although was quite difficult, but I loved the heavenly chickens coming back, didn't realise what was the meaning of those eggs though?  They didn't seem to give any points, or did I miss something :D

Anyway great game 5/5 on every aspect!  :)

Wow, thank you so much! We really appreciate your feedback!

If we actually move forward with releasing this game, we want to scale the difficulty as the player survives more nights. We also plan on spicing up the menus a little bit to create more interest as well as playing with additional set dressing and mechanics.

If you review the How to Play screen and scroll down, we explain the reward for picking up eggs!  Those heavenly chickens come from picking up eggs c:

Cool! Have you thought about getting this on mobile? I could imagine a lot of people downloading it and could be fun, having like a highscore list and you could even add different animals attacking and different animals to protect.

Developer

Yes, we definitely have! We were planning on releasing it after we had accumulated enough spare time to implement a couple fixes and mechanics. The high score board definitely does seem like something we would love to implement. Thank you again for your feedback!

Wow -

Sound - check

Graphics - check

Game play - check

It was a bit hard for me, but I enjoyed playing. Right from the get-go it felt well put together. The graphics are awesome and the models so well done on that.

Developer

Thank you so much! We learned a lot while making it. Unreal is a new engine for me (Valerie), so Rodel did a lot of teaching while we were working together.

We scoured everywhere for free assets and took advantage of all the assets that fit our theme. We did make the egg and the hammer models, but everything else was free assets. Most of the UI was made with just some free fonts and various images from Kenny's Assets.

As a side note, I don't always make it out of the night cycle with more than one chicken either! Although, Rodel did make it to thirty chickens once.

OMG  what a mad game  that was crazy fun . the arrow shooting seemed a bit strange  like the other guys said may be mouse would be better. Yes Love it :-)  Keep on with it

Developer (1 edit)

Great news! We just implemented mouse controls! Please feel free to check our latest build and let us know what you think.

Yea that's  so much better , It's not improved my playing  :-D Good Job a fun Crazy Game.

Hilarious and fun! Only complaint I have is the keyboard controls - it would have been nice to use the mouse to aim. Otherwise, adding a progression system/meta game would definitely keep people playing. I loved it.

Developer(+1)

Good news! After all the requests for mouse support, we took the initiative and implemented mouse controls! Players can now switch between mouse, keyboard,  and controller while playing.

We initially wanted to implement a progression system which scaled the difficulty depending on how long the player survives, but we ran out of time. Implementing it now would probably disqualify us!

Please feel free to check out the latest build which includes mouse support!

This game is awesome. I lost all my chickens except 1 in night one though :-D I could keep the last chicken alive for a while because I only had to focus on one.

My VR system didn't boot up, which is good. So I could play (I'm Mr.Sunshine from Discord).

Great work, it feels quite nice to control. I used an Xbox One controller btw :-)

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you, Mr. Sunshine! We were afraid people might not be able to play our game due to the VR plugin being enabled in the previous versions. Thank you for testing that Steam VR doesn't show up now.

Haha, we also found out ourselves that guarding one chicken is much easier than guarding your entire flock!

We're fellow console players, so we initially geared the controls towards controller. We have just released a new build which allows players to utilize the mouse, keyboard, and controller on the fly. Feel free to check out the new build!

OMG this is Blizzard meets Warner Brothers.
Of the games I've tried this has the most polished graphics and music, its making me consider re-calibrating my ratings.

Movement is smooth, but I'm not a fan of arrow keys for the shooting controls.
I think I'd prefer the mouse for that, but of course for a console build it makes sense.

Is it possible to give some feedback on the health of the wolves? Maybe change their transparency as they lose health so that you have to make split second decisions on which one to target based on their current status. It would just add a level of choice and complexity.

I wouldn't be surprised if I went to Steam and this game was already there, it just feels so finished.

(Btw - please remove the old builds from the download section on the page - wouldn't want people to use an old one.)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words!

Hmm, we'll definitely take what you said about the wolves into consideration. We thought about having an arrow over the wolves to indicate they stole a chicken, but we didn't have time to debate whether or not we should implement it. The due date was fast approaching for this jam and we needed to finish the overall core gameplay first.

If this game got good reception, we were actually planning to release it to steam with additional mechanics such as traps, additional enemies, and upgrades. As this is our first game and first game jam, we were unsure what the reception to this game would be. I'm glad to see you loved it as much as you did. We had a great time making it!

I much prefer the mouse controls, thanks for doing this.

Of the games I've tested you are the winner in terms of visuals and audio. Mood is very hard to rate but I'm happy to say you are equal top for that also. I have another that wins in terms of gameplay but its a very different type of game.

All I can say is that if you plan to commercialise this and want more help to do so I would be happy to put my hand up straight away.
I would love to work with a team doing this level of work.

Developer

With most every comment asking for it, we felt it necessary to include mouse controls for everyone to enjoy our game.

What is the other game you feel also wins in gameplay? We'd love to check it out! We've enjoyed looking at the other entries to see what other have come up with.

https://itch.io/jam/gamedevtv-community-jam/rate/658251 is my favourite for gameplay so far, its the one I've been annoying my family to try

https://itch.io/jam/gamedevtv-community-jam/rate/631273 this one is second for now - I love how the game expands as you interact with it

One silly idea I've had for yours is that the farmers family appear near the top of the screen each daytime, and depending on how you have progressed that cycle they either look more or less happy, if you are adding more chickens they do a dance and wear nicer clothes, otherwise they mope around with torn clothes, a feedback to the player to keep going, a progression if you will.

Whilst playing I thought that after I got down to one chicken and then voila I created a second one there was no real reward for doing so.

I'm not talking about things that should be there for a Jam though of course, but things to make it a commercial product. The other two games need polish or more content, but what they did in gameplay is a rough diamond.
