Nice little development on Snake. The controls were definitely a brain bender in depending on what  direction the snake was facing but that almost added a nice fast paced sense of difficulty in a way.

How was I still able to play the game after the chicken was eaten by the fox and I couldn't collect any more eggs?

Why was I able to eat the baby chick and why wasn't I punished for it with a game over?

The controls also screw with my sense of direction especially with the half second delay that makes me second guess my own inputs; I'd much rather they be Up for Up, Down for Down, Left for Left and Right for Right. I get that the choppy step-by-step animation harkens back to snake on Nokia phones and the chicken guarding, but it's also not very easy on the eyes...

1. Why could you still play the game after there are no more eggs or chickens?  We didn't set up the logic to detect that. Actually this is a valid criticism, but I don't think you need to ask why... rather as a critic you should have conviction in your opinion, or just state your observation. It feels kind of condescending to ask why... like you are implying I am a total idiot and you would like me to explain my backward logic.
2. Why weren't you punished for eating baby chicks? We rewarded it. I made that decision. You can blame me personally. Actually we debated several mechanisms [instant death, vegan-snake, pushes chicks/chickens aside]. I chose this route because it was the easiest to implement, given the other code that had been written.
3. Definitely going to change the control schema. I notice a ton of people complaining about the movement not happening smoothly... smooth movement it is!

Thanks for the feedback XD

"It feels kind of condescending to ask why" sorry, I didn't intend to come across that way, I was trying to communicate surprise and maybe confusion too, but maybe I should have chosen my words better :/

No worries. I was being a bit overdramatic myself.

I'd like to revisit these elements, but I'm still struggling to sort out how the logic should be.

If I were to take your implied advice on the previous comment and make the player lose when they collide with a chick (or any moving object), I expect that this will lead to frustration for the player, since they can't reliably predict ahead of time if the chick is going to move into their path on the next game step.

I'm leaning toward, if the snake doesn't eat something, it should  push the thing instead... but this leads to unanswered design questions: in particular, what happens if I push object A into object B?

Snake with a twist! Nice idea! I agree with others about the jittery gameplay, but I like the concept.

The game was okay... Didn't really get the gameplay to be honest. It was kinda jittery(perhaps not the intended gameplay). Liked the sound effects and UI though. The game overall was good, could use some improvements though.

If you don't mind, could you check out and rate my game?

How I love simple games!

It is definitely a challenge to find an answer to "how do I make a simple game that's fun in a short amount of time" question, and I think this is a good answer!

The jitteriness of the gameplay was a little off-putting, I would have been able to enjoy it a lot more if the snek and chickens and such moved with no interruptions, but i'm sure you could make the 1-unit movement work too with some small refinements.

Overall very cute and enjoyable game!

Funny concept! The music fits well with the relaxed and cartoonish style of the models and your itch page is well polished!

The only improvements I could spot would be to allow the player to Full-screen the game on the itch page and to improve the frame rate, because sometimes it was hard to play.

But the overall experience is pretty engaging, I spent quite sometime trying to fully grow an army of chickens and keep the fox at bay xD

I like it! The artwork is nice! Could be in an asset store pack

I have to admit wen I read the description I thought snakes really? But actually the twist that was put on was simple and effective. It was fun trying to corner the fox and when it slipped out of my traps it became a race to make up the ground and save the chickens. It felt a bit sparse in terms of audio and juice. With a bit more refinement this will be a really compelling game. I enjoyed it.

I'd have almost argued that this game went under the 'anti-lens' of every life counts, if going under the lens of "snake eats lives". Then again, it could ironically be implemented under not only the lens of 'if the fox eats all the chickens and eggs. They'd be no lives left to feed from'. Along with the objective giving the 'twist' ending of having to strangle/circle around a chicken.

So, tangibly wise. The twist, makes it nicely related to the game jam theme, for a 'simple' snake game. :)

Developer

That is an interesting way of seeing the theme.

Thanks for the feedback!

I struggled a little bit with only having A and D controls relative to the snake but we're seeing him from a different angle... but I really really liked this.
Beautiful art style, I enjoyed the sound. It's such a cute concept to protect the chickens whilst playing snake.
Really enjoyed.

This is an interesting twist on the Snake formula, though in my mind, the snake would probably want to eat the chicken instead of protecting it?

I like the polygonal art style for the creatures and levels assets. I think more work could be spent on adding to the gameplay formula, as it feels a little barebones and uneventful. It's a fun idea though.

We had played with the idea of a few more game mechanics including one with poison eggs, but due to time constraints had to keep things simple. Thanks for the feedback!

This is snake with a mechanic where you protect the chicken, funny! XD

I think would be better to have instructions in game too. I had few problems at the beginning, because I didn't understand what to do and why I was losing after 5 seconds xD

Latest polish has some (minimalist) instructions. Thank you again for vital feedback!
