Nice concept, but i died a lot and respawning breaks movement :(  Really unique idea with cards AND chess, also graphics are cool!

One sniper assist already breaks the game, literally with IndexOutOfRangeError.

My intuition sees the cards as I have to play this card not as a perk, so I got quite confused in the beginning.

Need to restart the game to play more than once.

There's something about this I didn't quite figure out, but that's ok.

I think this is the first chess themed crawler we've had. I could be wrong.

I did not get everything but "Good job you're almost at the final boss ... " then the game kind of stops probably means I reached the end.

I took me several retries, one time I got 4 Sinper assist perks but died to a random pawn, in the end I owned only 3 when I reached the end but they kept killing everything.

Movement is very good and the graphics are atmospheric. The music fits this atmosphere.

The game is super fun, and it's great that you got the time to add perks and consumables, it definitely feels like a proprer dungeon crawler this way.

I think what I like the most about this game is that the scale allowed by the mechanics is perfectly appropriate for a game jam and the adequate game length, I don't want a longer version, it is just perfect as is.

Developer

We expected someone to make it to the end, but we didn't think it would happen so quickly. You're very patient, since you could pull it off in this version of the game! This ending is part of the narrative, but in future versions it will be replaced by something more interesting.

We're going to keep the same game length, but add depth to the gameplay - add more maps, improve the intelligence of the pieces, make multiple characters, and so on. I'm not sure how much it will affect the length, but I think it will increase.

Thanks for the feedback, will be glad if you continue to follow the project!

really fun game and cool concept, the graphics are perfect and the ambience is great. i love this game and i hope for a possible full release! However there is a bug where if i die and restart from he menu, i am unable to move unless i exit the game.

Developer

Hi, thanks for the praise!

As I wrote before, we didn't have enough time for all the content we had planned and for testing the game. As you can see the game was submitted few minutes before the deadline.

I love the concept, great use of the dungeon crawler mechanics! I wish you could start again from the beginning of the floor when you die. There are a fug bugs, but I definitely see the potential. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! We overestimated our capabilities and finished the game in the last hours of the jam 😞. We had to cut a lot of content and didn't leave enough time for bugfixes. In any case, we plan to support the game after the jam.

I did that too, mine doesn't even have any sound 😅 I'll be curious to check your game again in the future! It's really cool to see a chess themed game, I'm closely following the world championship match that has just begun!

Developer

We fixed the game. It’s playable now.

Its a nice fun little game overhaul but one thing puzzles me . Why does it ask for firewall access? The game is as far as I can tell not multiplayer. Also quit button doesn't work.

Here is what I mean by "Asking for firewall access":

Developer

Thank you for the positive response!

About the firewall access, I found it on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/8c7ymb/my_unity_builds_try_to_access_t...

As I understand it, this is how Unity collects statistics and this can only be disabled in Pro/Plus versions of the engine

Interesting concept. It took me a couple tries to understand what was going on but once I got it then it was fun :) I do wish I had more lives or some way to avoid instadeath. I can see this being developed further into a really fun game with lots of strategic gameplay.

After dieing it seems that the controls are borked so you have to restart game.

Clean and nice graphics with good looking pixel art cards and pleasant sound!

Nice and snappy movement controls even though I would also prefer to be able to move with arrows and/or numpad. Nice touch with the small animation when you bump into a wall.

The perspective could've been improved a little bit. Because of the small tile size the player can't see parts of the floor and corners on the current tile and that makes orientation a little bit more difficult.

I am not sure I got the theme interpretation. The unique concept was good but where is the duality?

Thanks for the comment!

We slightly overestimated our strength, so we decided to give up most of the content and made the last versions on the last day of the jam. We did not have enough time for testing, as the page was created 2 minutes before the end of the jam, so there are some bugs, including critical ones. We plan to support the project, so they will be fixed soon and this version will be present as it should be, but not on this page.

Confronting black with white is a common practice, and therein lies the ambiguity. Moreover, once you get to the end, there's something else interesting to learn. I could tell you everything, but that wouldn't be interesting, would it?

Host

Ahhh. I should've seen it. Black vs white. Thanks for explaining :)
