This games fun, but there are deal breakers.

Collision sizes feel weird. And there is the focus function but it feels weird with bullets passing you like its nothing and there's no indication on where the center is other than focus. I'd rather have the image match the collision size.

Everytime I reach the bossfight and die I don't restart at the bossfight. I restart all the way at the back! AHH Please implement a savesystem so I can fight the boss already.

Also random colors on the bullets were interesting! but please set a cap so that only light colors are generated on the bullets. If the colors are dark then I can't see them.

I'm not going to go in detail with the bugs because its obvious people mentioned those already!

Other than that very fun game! Fun visuals! Very easy to get into! And you were creative trying a lot of interesting things! At least with some feedback you can figure out what worked and what didn't! Thanks for the fun game and your creative ideas!

First off, let's talk about what I would like different it this game

  • Restarting the game with buttons - The whole gameplay is done with only a keyboard, so it feels strange having to reach for my mouse to click 3 times just then go back to my keyboard while playing.
  • The bugs... - I think making them insta-kill you was a little overkill... Since then you have to start over from the beginning... and replaying a relatively easy part of the game just to try the bossfight again is not that inviting.
  • Although it is nice that you made the hitboxes generous, it feels more like it is a bug... (Now that I read the comments I got to know that there is a focus ability...)

The game is pretty fun - definitely easy to get into -, you can enjoy it right after booting it up. Other than some minor problems, the gameplay feels fair, collecting 100 files doesn't take as long as it seemed. It just prepares you for the bossfight. Which does escalate the difficulty. But if you die... (point 2)

Overall, a fun game, which I enjoyed playing. Good job! :)

Thanks for playing!

I'll address these issues one by one:

Restarting the game with buttons - The whole gameplay is done with only a keyboard, so it feels strange having to reach for my mouse to click 3 times just then go back to my keyboard while playing.

I was originally planning on having  like, space, as a shortcut key for the buttons. However, I knew some people would be playing with controller - and I myself was playtesting with a controller. Godot only lets me assign one shortcut key to a button, so I decided to assign it to the controller - as the people who were playing with a keyboard most likely had a mouse handy with them, while the people who were playing with controller probably didnt want to keep switching between controller and mouse.

The bugs... - I think making them insta-kill you was a little overkill... Since then you have to start over from the beginning... and replaying a relatively easy part of the game just to try the bossfight again is not that inviting.

If I continue developing the game, then I will reduce virus enemy damage, since i'm getting many complaints for that. I was also originally planning on having some sort of save system, so it would save whether you reached boss or not, but I could not do that due to time limitations D:

Although it is nice that you made the hitboxes generous, it feels more like it is a bug... (Now that I read the comments I got to know that there is a focus ability...)

Yeah, I should have probably made the focus ability more clear |:

Thx for playing and for feedback!

Although, you can only have one button assigned. you can still do this. :)

Step 1:

except... don't put it in quotation marks here... my bad! Sorry

Step 2:

Developer

Oh yeah, you're right! Why didn't I think of this.......

If I continue developing this game, then I will definitely do this, and I'll keep this in mind for future projects. Thanks :D

You really nailed the aesthetic and theme here, awesome work! I felt like it was a little too hard, or at least that there were too many enemies that moved too fast at first as I had more trouble with them than I did their bullets. Un-corrupting the files felt cool too. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Maybe I should change the speed for the enemies, you're right!

Negative things first: the intro text was too long, the collision detection was a bit finicky, movement was probably a little slow and sometimes I felt like I got one shot by 1 bullet.

With that out of the way, I really like this game actually, the main mechanics, audio and visuals fit the theme really nicely. Overall I enjoyed it despite the downsides :)

Developer

Thanks - I wanted to make a nice intro, but you know, time, right? The colliders are tiny and you need to use the focus ability to see them - I should have made that more clear, sorry.

sometimes I felt like I got one shot by 1 bullet.

Yeah, that's a known bug. Not sure why that happens D:

Thanks for playing :D

Awesome! I like the boss fight A LOT, its really intense, and considering it took you such a long time to get there, it seems to take EVEN LONGER to beat it XD. The music was really dull at some times, and I wish the spiders didn't INTA-KILL you. I did manage to beat the game though, and it was really fun! Great work!

Developer

Thanks alot!

I like the boss fight A LOT, its really intense

Thanks! I love the boss fight of your game too :D (The whole game is pretty much a boss fight lol)

considering it took you such a long time to get there, it seems to take EVEN LONGER to beat it XD

xD you're right!

About the music, my friend made it - I'll be sure to pass on the feedback to him. I felt that I had to make the virus enemies (spider things) more dangerous than the corrupted files - but I'm getting a lot of complaints about them one-shotting the player. If I continue developing this game, I'll be sure to fix that!

Nice! I'm excited to see how the game would end up if you continue developing it.

Let's get the negatives out the road first.

I think that the player movement was a bit slow, making it hard to dodge the thousands of bullets flying at you while simultaneously shooting and picking up the corrupt files.  The collision detection was a bit weird, sometimes I'd get hit by a bullet but it wouldn't register, and other times it does. When an enemy hits you with a bullet, you don't get a short amount of invincibility time, so if one bullet follows behind another, its an instant game over, with no time to react. I managed to reach the boss but then not long after a bug came and killed me instantly, perhaps you should have made it so that they only take off one heart and then die.

Okay, now with that out the way, let's talk about the things that I really liked about the game.

I love how you took the theme, I think it was really unique and I loved the idea behind it. The game was very challenging and fun too, I think you had the difficulty balance was just right. I liked the games music and sound effects, it fitted the gameplay and artwork nicely.  I also loved the inclusion of controller support, the game felt great to play with one! (I used a ps4 controller).  I found the joke at the start about the new virus known as the "coronavirus", I thought that was quite funny.

So overall, what are my thoughts on this game? It was fun, unique, and I definitely enjoyed my time with it! Well done!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks! About the player movement, the player speeds up once you level up. The collision shapes are tiny - you have to use the focus ability to see them (I should have made that more clear.) Also, the invincibility time is a good idea - if i continue developing this, I'll be sure to add that! I wanted the virus enemies (the bugs) to be more dangerous than the normal corrupted files are, but maybe you're right - it is sometimes a bit frustrating. My teammates helped a lot- I can't take all the credit. And yeah, I know playing with a controller feels great! I playtested mostly with my Xbox controller. I just randomly thought about the corona joke and had to include it xD.

Oh, I see! I honestly had no idea what the focus ability was for, so I never ended up using it. If you do continue developing the game, you definitely need to make that more clear, because during my playthrough I never used it once, I just thought it was a feature that wasn't finished, because all it did was slow me down and made me more vulnerable to bullets xD.

Developer

Oh. xD

Yeah, I should definitely make that more clear. Thanks!

because all it did was slow me down and made me more vulnerable to bullets xD.

I made it slow you down as well so the player doesn't just keep on using it for the whole game

Nice game, so so start the instruction, too much text also don't take corona as a topic. In the game sometimes I touch the bullets but I don't lose any hearts. I like the shooting, feels nice and the corrupted file, super high quality animation I like it. Overall nice game, could be improved :D
