How does you game fit the theme?
The boy is being helped by the souls to try and save himself. The boy is stuck in "The Between" and the only way out is to get HELP from the souls, so he doesnt end up alone.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
Mostly all of the content is made from scratch.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The introduction was really impactful (no pun intended) and the ambience was eerie but not necessarily scary which I think it right for what you were going for. I think others gave good feedback about communicating what the player is supposed to do, but I happened to get lucky on my playthrough and stumble across a pretty straight path to the goal that had plenty of souls (except one section where I had like a sliver of bar left when I picked up my next soul which was pretty intense). I really like what the camera angle did with the overhead tree branches, implying motion where there wasn’t any.

Short game but to the point but effective. I liked it a lot, thanks for sharing guys. My game is linked below if you want to check it out.

Thank you for a detailed and honest review, means a lot. Will give yours a try!

I found myself not knowing what to do, running in circles, then stealing other peoples souls... Interesting game...

Developer(+1)

Haha your review gave me a good laugh.. we agree it lacks some instructions or help, it will be updated! Thank you for playing!

Really nice game, I think that the concept works, but an explanation is required in-game, and it is quite unforgiving if you end up lost or take a wrong turn.

Developer (1 edit)

Hi, thank you for the feedback and yes you are right, we didn't think a lot about that part. In the next update after game jam ends we will give player more clearer instructions and leads to the end.

Good game. Although I should note that sometimes it became too difficult to search for the soul.

Thank you for playing, and for the honest review!

Hey! I have some hopefully good criticism! I think that the environment and art really complements the primary game mechanics. The atmosphere is done well! A walking sim/exploration game should have a good environment and atmosphere and that was right on the nail! Well done!

However, I feel that the games mechanics are not communicated very well, I didn't know what to do, and I didn't know where to go. From what I understood, it looked like you were supposed to  find all the souls and follow the path of the souls, but first that requires exploration. But it felt like the timer punishes you for exploring and accidentally going the wrong route, which weakens the primary game mechanics as a walking simulator/exploration game.

Phenomenal art! Great sounds! Fits the theme well! Design could use some work.

Thank you for making this game!

Developer(+1)

That definitely is some good criticism. Thank you for playing, it does mean a lot! :)

I wanted to comment how I felt about this game but Alien Tate really summarized it already.

Thank you fellow developer. Played yours, really impressed with the graphics, also the physics are really cool. It really fits my cup of tea haha :)

This could be a winner for me. Getting helped by souls is an interesting mechanic. I feel like checkpoints or save/load mechanics would be good for future releases. The audio was amazing and I really  felt creeped out throughout the game. This was amazing!

Developer(+1)

Checkpoints definitely coming at some point. Thank you for playing and for the nice review.
Good luck!

Very gloomy story - but the gameplay really fits to the narrative; At first I didn't quite know what to do, or where to go, but slowly figured it out until I finally reached the end and realized, what it was all about. Good job!

I can understand, that some people might get frustrated walking in circles. Maybe you could "hint" at the right path with occasional fireflies flying in the right direction, or maybe a little bit of fog creeping along the way.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you very much.
It does really explain itself at the end doesn't it. We gave a couple of small hints with the description. And the rest, or should i say the end is in the players hand, to develop in his own mind. It could hint at different things, there may be something else coming, or there might not. You never know. :)

Thank you for your kind words fellow developer. Look forward to playing your game also. Best regards! :)

I loved the graphics and sound. Very nice - especially if you built all the assets from scratch. The controls were a bit wierd, but I got used to it. I didn't quite get the game mechanic, though. What was I supposed to do? I tried running around exploring to the sides and found som blue souls (seemingly in random locations?), but then I died. I tried just walking forward slowly. That way I got much further, but it was not so much fun, and I didn't find any souls, so I died anyway. When I died I had to rewalk the whoooole way, just with a bit different path. In the end, I gave up. Perhaps I missed something? Otherwise, my suggestions would be:

  1. Add some kind of clues or ways to figure out where you should go.
  2. Add some kind of saving points.

Right now, I didn't feel I have any agency or way to improve, except perhaps slowly trail and error. With all that said, the mood, environment and sound design are among the best I've seen yet in this game! Good work!

Developer(+1)

We understand what you're trying to say. First of all thank you for playing.
Not all of the assets, but like 90% of them are made from scratch, especially the modeling.
About the game mechanic, or what you're supposed to do... You're supposed to find an exit on the map, it will present itself well, so you will definitely know that's the end. I agree about the clues, but we just thought it would be too easy, or to say, the game just wouldn't last long enough. Also we gave some thoughts about checkpoints, also seemed unnecessary, although now when you as a player from outside our development circle point it out, it makes sense.

All in all, thank you for a nice and honest review. Every critique is always welcome. Look forward to playing your game. We appreciate you playing, and will take your tips into consideration.
Thank you very much kind developer! :)

After reading your reply  (and some commets talking about the fantastic ending) I tried a few more times. This time I figured out I can bring the blue souls with me to use only when needed. I walked all the way along both sides, and also into a "cave" where thunderclaps started to sound, but I still never managed to find the end :( I just kept hitting dead ends :P Anyway, it truely is beautiful and with a nice mood.

Nice game with a silent hill feeling. Good job there!

Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed it!

I like the creepy sounds and graphics. Well done! I'm not sure why I died a few times. The scene restarts instantly, and I'm not sure what can I do better in the next round. Some feedback for the player would be nice here :)

Developer

So 1st thanks that you like game. The thing you should improve is to not wander around a lot, try to go more straight and upwards. Also player dies everytime your lamp reach 0 power. (You can see how much power your lamp has in the right corner). You gain power from lamp by taking blue souls around map. Also each time u sprint you get better light and speed but also your lamp will lose power faster.

I encourage you to try to come to finish because you will probably like it :)

Good game! great graphics. I could get stuck on alot of models though. And I think its cool you have a beginning cutscene. Not alot of submissions have cutscenes. good job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the critique, both are welcome. Also, thanks for the tip, it will get fixed in some updates.
Great game on your end also!

The environment was well put together and looked nice! Not sure I really liked the 1 button move thing though, kind of threw me off. Good game!

Really interesting game! I like the exploration and audio is really nice. I really like the concept of the game, and the graphics look very good.

I did find a tiny bug in the game. There is a place with lots of ghosts and graves and I found a wall that you can walk through into just an empty plain with nothing on it.

Developer

Thank you for playing, both good and bad critics are always welcome :)

Cool game, nice way to keep exploring the area and collecting souls. Audio has a nice ambient and while being near ghosts. :D

Thank you for the nice words. :)
