How does you game fit the theme?
It is a remake of a classic single player game, but this time you are not alone!

Oh, and please post your best time finishing the game! ;)

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
No, we used some assets from the asset store and we adapted music from Epidemicsound. But we created many assets and the game play logic ourselves.

As a "long time minesweeper" player with countless of hours into the original game I must say I enjoyed the challenge. I heard rumors of a time and after trying it out a bit I felt it was beatable (15 sec). I've not read all commments only the first page so my bad if something has been pointed out before, but some feedback.

The game plays out slightly different then the modern version of minesweeper which allows you to double tap certain unlocked blocks to reveal more of the board, this in combination with marking mines makes it much quicker to clear and another type of game. If you are used to playing like that (which I am) you need to rewire your muscle memory to adapt which took some time and still feels a bit awkward. The extra challenge in my mind addition to this is the transition to 3d which makes it harder to adapt while going at high speed, same with when the tanks spawn (he never reached the board for me though since I think you have to clear it before it comes to get a decent time). Another thing that's common with minesweeper is that the smiley is also a reset button of the board. Could also make sense to start the timer once you first click on the board instead of when you press "play again"

All in all a fun take of a great classic :) And nice music ^^

Developer

Thank you for your in-depth review! Happy to serve a connoisseur ;)

The double tapping was new to me. It could easily be added to the game. Of course the changes of the camera will make it more difficult (so many times I clicked the wrong square when the camera moved sideways for the tanks....), but I guess that's just part of the game. Starting the timer on the first click is obvious now that you mention it! Also an easy fix!

Now, 14 seconds is REALLY impressive!!! Great work getting that time! :D

Okay, I'm going to be honest, Minesweeper is NOT for me, and it gets really chaotic, that I have no idea what to do. I gave up when the tanks starts spawning.

i like the music transitions

the tanks moving away from actual mines is nice unless the marked mine is not a mine (how do they know?)

the face of the smiley is unsettling and i love it.

phase 1 is very faithful to the classic minesweeper but with a z-dimensional coat of paint(tip: phase 2 only happens after the 5th clearing)

phase 2 for me makes me extremely focused to the smiley (the smiley alone can used to the advantage of removing rather than marking mines)

phase 3 can just be utterly frantic with BOTH things that remove your progress and things that change what the goal would be.

flag marker my beloved

fun game

(during the run multiple tiles got a question mark yet only the smileys hit changed anything)

Developer

Thank you for your detailed comment! Glad to hear your full analysis of the game! And congratulations on beating it :D

On your last comment "(during the run multiple tiles got a question mark yet only the smileys hit changed anything)". There is a known bug where sometimes two question marks appear at the same time each time, instead of one. If this happens, finishing the level (by winning or losing) usually solves it. Otherwise, restart the game.

Awesome idea! Nice graphics and music!

Thank you!

an interactive minesweeper!! this game felt really solid and the music fit so well. i like it :D

Developer

Thank you! :D Glad you noticed the music. We put some effort into finding the right one, and recut it for the different stages and transitions :)

Darn, and here I was thinking we had come up with a unique idea to put a spin on minesweeper! and now I'm scared you guys did it better.
I came up with my idea in a dream, I'm scared to wonder how you came up with this chaotic kerfuffle of a game.

All jokes aside, This was a really fun game to play and everything felt intuitive and responsive. The fact that the board changes as you play adds some really interesting depth to the game. And with different difficulties and a bit more balancing I could genuinely see myself wasting hours at work to this.
The graphics were clean and the transition to 3d was great. The music is a perfect choice for the franticness of this game.

One thing I noticed is that the board generation is sometimes a bit unfair.  Sometimes the first click only revealed a tiny area that I had to guess to get out of, and sometimes it cleared basically the entire board. (Mine is much, much worse so I can't pretend like I'm any better here)
I did find the tanks to be a little annoying sometimes. It seemed like they were always targeting the same spot the whole time, which made it hard to clear as it kept getting reset.

Anyways, Great submission!

And good luck fellow minesweeperer

Hi! Thanks for playing our game! Haha, yeah, what are the odds of two mine sweeper games in one game jam - even with 1000 submissions! I have later seen that itch.io is littered with Mine Sweeper clones and variations, so I guess neither of us is uniqe! ;)

We didn't dream up our idea. Instead we brainstormed a lot - we hade horror diving games, hive mind insect games (which I have seen other's have actually made) and much more, but no idea seemed to spark the interest of everyone, until we had this idea of "not being alone in a standard game". Originally we though of games such as chess, but then the brainstorm turned into old classic single player computer games :D

I'm glad you liked the game. About the sometimes unfair placement, that is true. One of our team members is actually a mathematician who wanted to develope an algorithm which makes every game guaranteed to be solvable without taking a chance. But with a board that changes all the time, that didn't seem like the best use of time. Random starts with an element of luck could also be seen as part of the game. But slightly more consistency would be better, for sure.

About the tanks hitting the same spot: Initially they appeared completely at random, but that meant they became irrelevant when most of the board was cleared. Also, it was easy to get stuck with a few unexplored tiles left where it was impossible to deduce the placement of the mines. That's why we made them always aim for unexplored tiles, but that brings the problem you mention. Perhaps we should have made only every second tank or so go for the unexplored ones, and every second appear at random.

Thank you for your in-depth review! It is so interesting to read new perspectives :)

Cool Game, i thought it was a really fun take on minesweeper!

Wow, I've always loved minesweeper and this was a surprisingly balanced and fun addition to it. Kept me on the edge of my seat until I was able to clear it! Well done! -Dustin

Developer(+1)

I'm very glad you liked it and found it balanced! Balance is always tricky, but for someone who already knows mine sweeper, I think this works well! Thank you :)

Haha, performs as advertised. It’s a clever idea and it’s actually not as obnoxious as I thought it would be, it’s a fun challenge to try to sweep the mines quickly and also keep track of the ones the smiley face is erasing. You guys did a good job on the UX, it feels responsive and satisfying to interact with. Nice job. My game is linked below if you want to check it out.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! It is always fun when some detail is pointed out, like the UX! It makes me happy :)

I was not expecting that! Amazing idea and execution! As others mentioned, the game is really chaotic, but I think that's what I love the most about it. It's certainly a unique twist to minesweeper as a whole. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Very glad you liked it 😊

I like the graphics, the idea, and the sound. But the game is SOO hard!!! i just cant get anywhere. pretty good-

Developer

Hi! Yes, we realize it's probably very hard if you don't already have enough experience with the classic, regular Mine Sweeper game. Right now, I believe it is perfect for someone who is already pretty good. Some different difficulty levels would've been a great addition to the game! Thanks for playing! 😊

Good game, could you please rate my game https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-8/rate/1680919 ?

I was looking forward to playing a relaxing game of minesweeper, but this is even better!

Developer

Haha, I'm glad you liked it, even though you didn't get the relaxation youbwere looking forward to! 😉

This game was really chaotic, but still fun overall. Do you mind rating mine when you get a chance?

Developer

Thanks for trying our game! Sure, I will next time I get the chance to play some more games!

Submitted(+1)

Absolute chaos :D

I was thinking that yellow face was just removing my flags and numbers to confuse me. I didn't thought that he was actually removing mines, until I tried to click on such place. But tanks made me laugh xD.

Developer (2 edits)

The yellow face works in mysterious ways. One can not always be sure what its intentions are ;)

Thanks for trying out our game, really glad you enjoyed it!

The mine sweeper we want but didn't ask for. I really had fun playing and see all the chaos while remembering if this was a bomb or not XD. Great work!!

Submitted(+1)

It was really trippy. I never quite understood what was going on. Is the yellow faced man my friend? I still can't tell.

Developer

Thank you for trying our game! =)

The yellow faced man is instructed to either remove an existing mine, place a mine or simply do nothing.

Developer

He works at random to spread confusion, but he may actually end up helping you now and then 😊

This is an amazing twist on a classic game. It’s hard to make a twist that works so well and you managed it! Looking forward to possible future updates :).

Thank you for trying our game and for your comment! Very glad you liked it! 🙂
