I'll always be impressed by people who can create an entire game by themselves. I agree with ScusX comments below, but honestly, they're rating a game with a lot of detail for something created in a game jam. Well done on your game and i hope to see more of what you create in the future! I really liked the player's look and the enemy animation (i saw 3 of them), but I'd definitely like it if the game moved faster. Thanks for your submission! If you have time, can you try our game as well?

In what way does your game fit the theme?
Gameplay. You have to shoot down hordes of enemies in order to survive.
Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
Yes, everything was made from scratch.

I like the graphics and audio, and can appreciate how they are made from scratch, however I think this game suffers a lot from something I'll call "developer-is-the-only-player-itis", which can especially be problematic for game jam games. There are a lot of mechanics that were designed to make the game more difficult for its only player (the developer), but as a player it feels like I'm usually just circling enemies waiting for my gun to reload or my knife to recharge (which isn't that fun).
Here's some suggestions for things I think could make the game better (probably implementing all of them would be bad, but maybe adding a few could be good):
- Guns have infinite ammo and increased fire rate. The ammo counter seems like a waste (especially since you can reload after running out), and the fact I'm stuck waiting to chamber the next round for so long feels wrong. This doesn't necessarily need to be a buff either, if you weaken the individual bullets but increase the fire rate it will feel a lot more fun, even if the raw damage output is the same.
- Ability to shoot in all directions. While technically being able to shoot in one dimension is unique, what I've found is that it really hinders the gameplay because it forces a relatively simple loop. 1) move to side of screen. 2) shoot a bullet or two. 3) use the fact you move faster diagonally to kite around outside of screen to get to other side. 4) Repeat.
- Enemies get momentarily stunned when hit by bullets and will stop charging you. Would help with the faster enemies, and also adds depth to gameplay. Yeah you COULD shoot a weaker enemy off the map, but maybe it's better to stun the big dude to buy some time.
- Cover and smarter enemies. Adding cover blocks to hide behind could go well with shooting in multiple directions. Since this is a unity game, you can use unity's built-in pathfinding to keep enemies from running directly into walls. Some enemies should also flank the player and stuff like that to keep them from forming a giant blob in the center of the screen.
- Enemies that shoot. This may already be in the game, as I only got up to two enemy types, but introducing these enemies sooner could help spice up the gameplay and dodging, especially if the player is significantly faster than all but the charging enemies.
Also, I think grenades are broken in this build, I was only able to use one of them during my run, even though the HUD said I had another.
Best of luck to you and your game. Let me know if you decide to make a post-jam version!
I like that the graphics are simple but still 100% do what they need to. The audio is also nice, I enjoyed the background music that played. I think my only problem is that I wish the enemies changed color or got thrown back a little to indicate that they've been damaged. (Also that 3d intro thing you've got is cool, I'm going to have to make something like that)
Nice minimalistic style! If I would suggest something it would be a faster pacing :D
I love the visual style, very nice. I wish the second wave of enemies came sooner because the first wave was very low intensity. The "How to play page" said "press q to throw bomb" but for me the bomb was bind to "r". I only realised that at the end of the second wave. Also, when I needed to reload I was always wondering why it is taking so long to shoot. A reload sound would've been nice. Overall a cool game.
This was a lot of fun. You know it is well-designed when just as I was thinking, "I would love to see more variety," it came! The music is sweet. I love the little characters. I give this a rating of "simple, yet effective." And yes, it does get chaotic. Well done.
Cute game! I loved the art style. And your "Ordeal Games" intro was super awesome! How did you make that? Not sure if it's just my computer or something but I was only able to shoot the gun maybe once every 5 seconds? The knife seemed to work fine, and I wasn't able to throw bombs at all. Either way, nice retro atmosphere! Well done!
Hello, thanks for playing my entry! The intro was made by a friend of mine in blender. The fire rate is that slow as I didn't get the time to play test my game but I will fix it in later updates. For the bombs are you pressing 'R'? I know it should be 'Q' but for some reason I thought 'R' is just fine. If you're pressing the correct button then the question is are you playing on Windows? Anyway thanks for the feedback!
Cute game. What is weird is that you use the mouse to shoot, but not to aim. I understand you did not want a top-down shooter, but I would at least make the player turn right-left with respect to the mouse position
Nice job though
Simple and fun! Really, really good.
Not letting up/down shoot really enhanced the gameplay, the weapon evolution, it's a good touch, the monster are great too!
If you want give it a try to my game: https://kailcor.itch.io/donutchaox
Fixed version: https://kailcor.itch.io/donutchaox-fixedversion (the commited one do not start for unity compression.... XD, big fail).
The art style is simple yet nice and the gameplay is fun. It can definitely improve with faster shooting, but the game still felt polished and the UI is pretty clean. The music sounds great too. Good job!
Very simplistic art style was enjoyable.
The game is fun and polished.
The game mechanics themselves are all well put together and work great, just need some tweaking.
The start felt a bit slow and the enemies were a bit spongey.
Great job!
If you have another person and a controller available to plugin please check out my game!
This game have potential - the graphics, sound.
But could it be a bit faster? Faster shooting would fix it all. With this slow fire rate it takes the hell lot of time to get to another level - to see more of the game. This way the game feels be all the same.
I felt like this game was amazing, for real, even though at first I felt like the shooting pacing was a bit slow, I felt like most of the game mechanics and gameplay was well thought out, the way it exponencially keeps growing and growing the chaos, it's really nice, and gives a final well made design. Congrats, btw, loved the design and the choice of pixel size of your artwork, was it 16 x 16?
When I played it for a bit I was a bout to close the game because I felt I had seen everything, but then suddenly those slug-luke enemies spawned. The same happened a bit later with the squid enemies that shoot those projectiles. Unfortunately I died there, and I did not feel like going through the whole game again to see if there is even more content. Did you have any more enemy types?
I thought the game was a lot of fun and very chaotic near the end of my playthrough, with the squid enemies, the slug enemies and the normal enemies all together. I agree that you should not spawn all of them straight from the beginning, but I believe the game would be more enjoyable if you get to that point a better more quickly. Now the beginning is (at least for me) pretty easy and boring, but you have to get through it to get to the good stuff. :/
The art was simple, but looked really good! Maybe some explosions when you killed enemies would be a nice touch, but that is nothing serieous. The music also was great! Did you make it yourself? If so, I am impressed! :O I always wanted to make my own music for my games, but I can never make a tune I am happy with.
Sorry for the long comment. I really enjoyed playing! Great job :D
No need to apologize for the long comment. Yes I agree that the game could be more fast paced, didnt really have a lot of time to playtest. Also i tried adding particles but i wouldnt have made it in time for the submission time. Yes all the assets we're made by me, music included. Also there is one more enemy type which chases you and explodes when gets close enough to you. Thanks for playing the game and good luck with your entry!
