I really like games where you teleport from place to place as it avoids having too big a map - it also provides new interest every time you move!

A few issues with objects:

GET TRASH CAN in Santa's office - 'What trash?'

GET CAMP FLYER - 'What flyer?'

In order to do most things with the handful of leaves, you have to (VERB) LEAF - HANDFUL and LEAVES don't work.

X AD just results in 'You see nothing special.'

If you drop the letter, the mud or the D battery at the Maple garage (and possibly in other places), you can't pick them up again.

I also spotted quite a few typos - I can post them in the community forum or send you a list if you like.

Nice original story though and I was really rooting for Bigfoot!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I'd love a list of typos, I'm normally terrible at typing the first go around and I haven't had much time to do all the double checking I would have liked.

Have posted list in the forum thread https://itch.io/jam/an-adventuron-christmas-jam/topic/1122180/entry-save-bigfoot...

A strange use of the Christmas theme, but that worked well.

A bit more polish is needed though. For example:

  • I couldn’t take the camp flyer (the game kept asking me “Which flyer?”) so I had to use TAKE ALL and go to another location to examine it.
  • X AD doesn’t work, but READ AD, yes.
  • You can’t examine the leaves in your inventory.
  • There were some guess the verb, as mentioned by others.

But while the game is rough at the edges, the interlocked progressions at the multiple regions were interesting and natural, and the puzzles were creative. And the teleporting graphic was a nice touch.

So a interesting entry, that deserves a bit more work on it!

Thanks for the feedback! Definitely agree about the parser polish needed, that's the part I ran out of time on. I've been working on an update, hopefully I'll have it up soon.

I liked the graphics and use of animated gif (for teleporting sequence and the falling snow), I did not think about that possibility and adventuron.

The woods layout and puzzle is my favorite and the other puzzles were well linked to the story and it was nice that they did not just require one step to be solved.

I finished and was well rewarded by santa. I had no major issue, I just had a little difficulty with the wording of slide puzzle because I had already made lot of test before getting the right tool (but it would be nice if the sentences worked with BOLT noun).

So I think it's a very good contender for the contest )

ps. a friend told me he was blocked because he dropped the can at the campfire, and was not able to take it back with message "you leave the bottles and cans where they are".

Developer

Oh wow, thanks for that bug about the can - I can see exactly how that happened. I've been working to try to smooth out the vocab guessing and hopefully will have an update soon. Thanks for the feedback!

Really enjoyable! It's especially engaging because puzzles seems extremely frustrating at first (getting lost in the woods with no clues...) but as you start exploring you quickly find ways to make progress. It is also very satisfying because it almost feels like you stumble on the right answers, not that you were guided to it.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

This was an interesting game to play, and it took me a few breaks away from the keyboard, mulling things over, to solve all of the puzzles. Each of the "cases" worked really well, and were satisfying to solve, because they all made sense in terms of the story. One constructive thing I would say is that there were a couple of situations where puzzles required multiple steps to solve, and I wished there had been a hint that I was on the right track after having done one or two of the steps. The example that sticks out in my mind is (being vague to avoid spoilers) how to deal with the campers in the woods. Having taken one step that seemed necessary (and turned out to be correct), the campers didn't change their reaction to me at all, so I thought for a while that I had the wrong idea.

Finally, I think that you managed to pull off the very low resolution graphics nicely, and gave each location a nice flavour that supported the text very well.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I can definitely see the need for some sort of feedback for the mask puzzle - changing their reactions would help a lot!

Great twist on the theme, and it was fun finding evidence to save Bigfoot! Good job!

What an  excellently fun game! I played this with my (nearly) 8 year old who is now a bit of an expert at these sorts of games and we spent a couple of hours over it. Apart from the opening and closing scenes, the Christmas theme sits nicely in the background which is quite a refreshing change from the more overt reindeer and elf -ridden settings of other games (not that I have anything against reindeer and  elves, you understand), and the falsely accused Bigfoot storyline is a fun and motivating premise (I was burning with righteous indignation throughout). The puzzles are just the right level of hardness to keep grown ups and kids interested without becoming too frustrating and I'm a sucker for teleporting in adventure games - it's a great device for breaking up the uniformity of the experience by zapping between disparate locations,  and scattering  the puzzle elements between them helps to maintain an overall coherence. There is certainly a satisfying sense of achievement on completion.

There are a few bugs to highlight and specific comments to make (compiled from my child's notes, so there may be one or two other things that are not listed here - but these are the main things we spotted):

- Santa's desk= "Santa's desk is filled OF [with] letters and lists..."

- GET TRASH CAN (in Santa's office) = "What trash?" / GET CAN = "You can't find it";

- The teleport graphic is great but it is crying out for an accompanying sound effect!;

- You can't cancel the teleport once you've ENTERed COORDINATES (provide an option to cancel and stay in Santa's location);

- There is no TAKE message for the ratchet;

- PUT BATTERY IN x produces the standard "not a container" Adventuron message (the same issue I've seen in several of these games). I'd suggest you anticipate and override that system message as I find it really does break immersion (for me, probably because I'm looking out for it in Adventuron games by now);

- Typos when finding the band spray paint evidence: "must have been A [delete] their REBELIOUS [rebellious]..."

- Typo in end scene: "you deserve a special COMMODATION [commendation]..."

- we struggled slightly with guessing the verb to deal with the play apparatus: UNBOLT doesn't work, RATCHET (as a verb) doesn't work, BREAK doesn't work... but we figured it out in the end.

All the above are easily fixed and don't detract too much from the overall experience of what is a very jolly game. Well done!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback and finding all of the bugs! I totally agree that the teleporter transition really needs a sound effect - its one of the things I was working on but just ran out of time. Once I get a little more time I'll probably go back and add one.

What was the solution for the slide? I can't figure it out, myself. Although I haven't found any ratchet!

You need to UNSCREW BOLT (as far as I remember) when you're in possession of the right tool (if you haven't got it then go away and look for it elsewhere).

I would definitely recommend playing with tutorial on, the command “activate teleporter” wasn’t immediately apparent and had to restart the game with tutorial on to find out how to use it.
