What do you think of episodic video games?

Are you a fan of any episodic video game? Do you develop one? Do you find it profitable?

I plan to make my half-small project an episodic one where you can play on the web and that this is updated every so often. What do you think?

I’m currently developing something I’d like to release episodically. I do think it can be profitable: each episode release is an excuse to market your game once more. Games like the Half-Life series are good examples, too.

Not sure how you intend to profit, though, as you cannot charge people for playing web games on Itch.io.

I don't intend to put the paid episodes, I'm a nobody at this and I'm not an expert either, so I want the few people who are going to try my projects to do it for free. What I would appreciate wholeheartedly would be optional donations on patreon

I think this should be done more often. Its like t.v. a film is a one sitting and series are bite size pieces. it works. i think it suits more casual gamers.

I'm not a fan nor a hater of episodic video games. Episodic and non episodic could be great video games if done properly.

About developing episodic games, it depends on game's story. If it's complete in one game, then that's it. Next game is either sequel or spinoff or totally new game.

Oh so that's what you meant by episodic. I can see pros and cons of this:

Pros:

1. Stuffs get updated over time, making things more interesting and or have more stuffs.

2. Bugs could get removed over time, making the game more stable.

Cons :

1. If the game had save game feature, the update has high chance to break previous save game forcing players to replay the game again.

2. New bugs might appear after the update.

The game will be a web game, free, playable from the same page of itch.io, with this to be updated without the need to download the game again.

And there's nothing wrong with the first point, I have that part under control.

Episodic games? I love them! If your game has a system anywhere similar to Telltale Games' system of releasing the story episode-by-episode, then that'll be pretty awesome!

As soon as I get to better grips with Godot, I will certainly start working on some sort of Episodic game. As for whether or not it is profitable... I don't know yet :)

I hate it when I'm in the middle of the game and it just suddenly ends without coming to a satisfactory conclusion, so I usually only play episodic games when the series is finished.
