u should've seen my reaction when I woke up and the game went from looking like the whiteboxed mess it was to the state it is rn 😂

our artist really is a gem 💎

yea that's actually a common thing on itch.io, it's like filling out a form online, if you refresh the page without sending the form it is not saved.

what i do is i do the rating, save it and then i write the comment! :)

u're more than welcome to try and beat my score, its on the second screenshot 😏

Fun! I must confess I just collected every speedboost I could and at some point i was REALLY fast, these crows must have superpowers to catch an ant that fast lol

I like that it's a bit like templerunner but the corners add depth to it, makes it stand out for me, good job on the submission!

I think this game suffers from a few design flaws: With a bit of luck, you can dash through all three levels without ever trying to play the game. I completed all 3 levels just by dashing and jumping, which made hitting irrelevant haha

I'm also not so sure it fits the theme at all, I understand that you're a deer and that deers can be considered food, but here you're playing a deer in space that gets attacked by medieval knights shooting fireballs?

It's a good try, but I like to think that it could have been more than a platformer where the stretch is "deer is food"! No hard feelings though.

This game is really really cool, my only issue with it is there's too many effects, once I understood that I can literally just play around "1" and get my energy back for collecting as many plants as possible, I just defaulted to that strategy and won all 3 maps without even trying to play with the effects of 2-5.

Personally, besides what people are saying with the tutorial, I think it's impressive to think that you had enough time to design that many mechanics and then implement them too, maybe the game would've been a bit easier to "swallow" with less mechanics but then it would've been less impressive as well. It definitely left a mark on me though!

The idea is really cool, I would've loved to have different kinds of food though and the cooking time is a bit long. A little bit of fine-tuning could go a long way with this one!

I liked the idea of having different stats on items and choosing which ones you eat, I would've loved to have more time to read the effects or feel the impact of them a bit more. Regardless, very nice concept.

I spammed spacebar and ate all the pancakes, Kila asked me to drink the milk but I REFUSED.

She gave up eventually. That's what you get, Kila.

I tried my best to play the game, but I just could not get it to work to the point where I could review it like the others here. On Firefox, it did not work at all, no matter which zoom in / out. On chrome, it worked but the first trap seemed impossible to dodge, I tried a lot of timings but maybe I am just not good enough for it lol

It's too bad that there isn't anything envelopping the experience (sounds, menu, and whatnot) but time is always the biggest issue in jams like these. That aside, this idea is unique and does indeed stand out, I could totally see this as a mobile game on the market. I hope you consider polishing it, if it were published it would 100% be on my phone haha

Very fun little game, very admirable that you drew the characters yourself, that must've cost a lot of time!

Not sure what you mean with "nothing uploaded", there's a playable game in the downloadable folder? Maybe it was uploaded after submission? (?)
The game looks pretty interesting, I like the added bomb mechanic but I think there's an issue with the keybinds, if I press F it drops a timed bomb, if I left click it just blows me up and stuns me for what feels like an eternity!

I kept missing 1 or 2 berries when I tried walking in a straight line but I think that's just my incompetence haha

I can see that the game feels a bit like PacMan! It definitely has appeal but I think it lacks a bit of polish and maybe another mechanic to make it stand out more, good job on it regardless!

Not to crash out, but this is the first time ever since I started doing jams where the theme feels ...wrong.

Themes are supposed to be blurry, give way to different train of thoughts, different approaches, but this? Frontier? With the image portraying the old west and an american flag?

This narrows it down so much already, even if you ignore the chosen image and just go for frontiers in general, it's already so... specific?

"Build to Scale", "Losing is Progress", "Duality", "Everything must go right", idk, those were old themes from various jams that felt like you could do anything and still fit the theme, but Frontiers?

I'll still do my best to think of something out of the box, but I have to openly admit, this is a first for me, first time I look at the theme and instead of going "Oh!" I just go "Oh....".

Good luck to everyone regardless!

ofc man, as long as it's not exactly the same name! 😄

Thank you for rating our game! :) By the way, if you would like to continue developping your game I'd like to help you out! If you think that's a good idea or if you just wanna reach out feel free to add me on Discord! My username is the same :)

as the game designer, this is really hard to swallow ahah 😅 we wanted to come up with something unique and just saying yes or no was not going to cut it, we thought about making a card battler but didn't want anything too pushed or anything too simple and that's what we ended up with, it lacks polish i'll admit that! We had to do a lot of bugfixing and decided to focus on submitting a playable game rather than a perfected broken mess xD

The game does feel a bit overwhelming, but you get full points for innovation, this game certainly has an appeal I haven't seen in other submissions yet, it's very creative and I think if this idea is polished it could be an excellent title to sell as a standalone!

Great job!

I'd love for you to try ours: https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-13/rate/3328267

We only have a few ratings so far compared to all the big games out there, but the game is pretty good! I rate and comment every game I come across! :)

I'd love for you to try this one: https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-13/rate/3328267

We had to bugfix a few things because the card system wasn't too stable, but now it should be good. We only got 9 ratings so far though because nobody really promotes it all too much, maybe you can help us out? :)

This game was a lot more fun to play than most games that just copied a famous game and tried making it their own.
Especially for a first game, it delivered. I had a lot of fun with it!

I'd look into going for a different approach with the physics, maybe drag&drop instead of click (that's what confused me at first because i kept dropping things or not picking them up properly).

Also, the fridges are hella OP xD

Thank you for the fun!

And that's absolutely fine! What counts is that you learn from the jam, time management plays the biggest part in jams but it's also about knowing what could've been.

Feel free to reach out if you need any help :)

An interesting approach on the "Reigns" genre!

Love the artstyle of the game, unfortunately game balancing is super important in games like these, the choices barely impact the game which makes it seem like it's impossible to get to an ending unless you make dozens of correct choices.
There's also no numerical display of the different values / stats, which makes it hard to say how much impact our choices have.

Still, love games like Reigns, with a little bit of tweaking this game could be very fun, I hope you do end up balancing it out! DM me on Discord if you need help with it i'd be happy to contribute :)

I am really shocked at how nobody in the comments has the courage to tell you how awful this game feels.
I think it's because nobody wants to have their game hate-rated in return, however I'd rather have my game hate-rated but give you some actual useful feedback than gaslight you into thinking your game was great when (in my opinion) it has a lot of issues...

The game design feels very flawed, I think having friendly fire on the king would have added some much needed creativity, but as it stands this is just a wave-based shooter game and that's about it. The choice of weapons (manual / auto) gives you the choice between 2 weapons that do the exact same amount of damage, except that one gives you the comfort of not having to click every time with the drawback of hurting your ears while you use it...

The purple slime being exactly the same as the green one with just more health feels like a wasted opportunity to make the game more interesting! I could've totally seen some enemies with different moving patterns or maybe the ability to shoot you!

There's no bonuses or perks that make the game more interesting, every wave just feels like it's the same loop over and over again where you move around the king and shoot the enemies.

As for the sound design, the music is fitting enough but the gunshots really hurt to listen to, especially the automatic one. It's also lacking a lot more sounds that would've added some depth to the game (new wave sound, monster sound, etc).

The screenshake is something people often turn off in games, I think this should've been considered during production if you really wanted to add it in.

Every designer might have a different opinion on this, for me the friendly fire on the king would've made this game a lot more interesting, that aside you should consider adding some variety to the game (perks, bonuses, new weapons) and most importantly look into having the gun shots be more satisfying than just using the same overlapping sound over and over again (using a random pitch already works, maybe using an uzi sound and making it a bit less raw would make it sound nice too!).

I appreciate jams because people get to watch what you made and comment on how they felt about it but I think for this game particularly, people don't go out of their way and just say the game feels nice or fun when I can already see them rating your game a 2 or 3 out of five at best...

I hope that moving forward people will be a bit more honest, because we're here to learn, not to pretend we like something to get more points!

In my opinion the character should be replaced by something that fits the AD a bit more, if you do that i'd probably buy the game on steam right away!

I really like the premise of re-using the structure of games like 60 seconds but putting it into a fantasy setting. Sadly, I never made it to the end and after trying 3 times, I had to give up. The game balancing feels off, exploring was almost always a waste of time for me and even trying to skip nights by not using fire and then resting to get both sanity and energy back wasn't a good strat for me. I also somehow feel like a good strat is to come out of a night with 0 hunger and 0 water thirst, that way you can do actions for free since you can't die from hunger / thirst during the day, but maybe that's just me?

I love the flashlight mechanic and I think it adds depth to the game.

I would've wished for some music.

One of my fav games still, I hope u can tweak it here and there :)

(1 edit)

I'm a jazz / blues pianist and I'm really good at music games so this comment will be 100% biased xD

Loved the game, it felt pretty polished and the theme was well put into it. I liked the last song the most, it felt great to listen to.
The only thing I'd critique is that the audio feedback from the note you play comes a bit before it reaches the bar, I understand that u're supposed to have some kind of audio prediction, my feedback is merely that the prediction is off (should be heard a bit later than it is rn).

Great game!

I love roguelikes, the map really reminded me of Slay the Spire which is my favorite game :)

Cute little game! I could definitely see this working out as a mobile game, hope you keep working on it!

I had to read the comments to find out what this game is actually about.

I picked mage, hit the tree and then the bees came so I just carbonized them by fire.
Then I started instinctively hitting everything with my stick (so I dodged the weird spike after the slime that I killed).

I hit the inn and the game told me you didn't have more time. I was shocked thinking it's just a walking simulator with nothing to it but apparently it's about not dying haha.

It's a good game but I would've maybe made it shorter but a bit more packed in content! Definitely like the vibe to it though.

I like the idea of the game a lot. I think what was missing for me was something additional to make up for the loss of my vision of the character. Maybe making it only 2 maps but slightly bigger with checkpoints (where u are visible) would've made it a bit more appealing but then again it doesn't play into the story... you surely came up with something that's hard to work with but you made something out of it regardless!

I like that you did your own voice-acting, I'm fangirling over the voice of X I think haha

🐷 💀

i appreciate you, thanks <3

Interesting. The movement feels a bit clunky which is regrettable with how important it is for platformers. The mechanics are kept simple, yet none of these points hinder the enjoyment of it! I was actually pretty engaged and had fun, the music kinda reminded me of the Terraria ice biome.

I was shocked to finish the first and suddenly see myself in the credits menu, I was expecting double the playtime I had, especially given that you were 2 programmers, did something go wrong during production?

Cool little game regardless, läuft bei Euch :D

I saw you commenting everywhere which really caught my attention so I checked your game out and wow, I'm so glad I did. You know how some people comment "for some reason your art really speaks to me"? This is it for me, I'm blown away by how cute the art is. The game is really fun and super complete, I'm surprised you did this in a week??

Well done!

Game looks pretty fun, unfortunately I was not really sure what to do at the start so I ran around mindlessly for way too long (I guess you didn't anticipate that people would be as stupid as me haha), after I restarted and finally got it I followed the trail for a while but it felt a bit too repetitive for me, the art is great but my favorite part was still when the snowstorm calmed down :D

here's mine: https://nbeeler.itch.io/hollow-pines

i'll be dropping a comment on yours shortly, ty for doing this i appreciate the hustle :)

I managed to get the shop in for my game if you want to check it out! I have to admit it took almost 3 days to get it to work properly though so I was happy I cut back other stuff early, it really is a lot of work especially since it was my first roguelike haha

You really prioritized polishing the game and it shows, the game is very clean and optimized.

I'm not sure how I feel about the gameplay, on one hand it's random perks / upgrades on the hats so it seems to give off that roguelike feel but then again you can't really gain anything for subsequent levels so it's more of an RNG aspect than a roguelike one, on the other hand every level (imo) is some kind of puzzle you solve by shooting snowballs in a specific order and direction, which makes me wonder if the RNG aspect really makes sense here, it definitely is a nice touch but I feel like it's missing something to really justify the game loop on a longer run, don't get me wrong you'll probably win this jam given how short it is but if you want to make this into an actual game it's food for thought for sure :)

One question that I do have: Is this inspired by Peglin or is it just coincidence?

Congratz on the game, it's dope! (please check out mine too :D)
