Theme incorporation
I have incorporated the themes of Ancient Ruins and Solitude by having a modern day player stumble into an old Rite of Passage Trial from an unknown time with an unknown past after a rapture of sorts occurred, and attempted to incorporate Infinity/The Endless by way of looping back to the beginning of the small maze until all criteria are met.

I was a little confused as to what was going on, I explored a bunch and then I think I died and I didn't quite understand what the arrows were for.

That being said, I really really like the visual style of this game. It looks really cool and the fact that it's an actual gameboy game? That is wild!

Developer

The arrows were indicating which ways were open to moving, the colour depended on if you were about to or immediately could. If you got sent back to the title screen after the skull conditioned flashed then yes, you died XP

I do have an updated version ready and waiting for when I'm allowed to change the file so things are a bit clearer but I'm glad you liked it!

I reached the beach ! ("You have proven yourself." ect.)

Here is my attempt at mapping the game, I'm almost sure there's something I did not get about how the map of the game works as there are problems , yet maybe I just made some mistakes, but it was good enough to identify the different paths and complete the game.

I enjoyed the game, mapping the game, finding the paths which lead to points of interest which don't kill you, trying to reach the hands first with the "good find", which did nothing, discovering the smoke part, then getting back to the hands with the tool that I was quite confident would actually do something. Then I got into the shortcut to the smoke part and followed the most illumanited path. This is an engaging structure which creates a interesting narrative. I like the beach ending picture (I almost stopped there and missed the following text by the way).

The game looks nice and controls well. I really like the overall deadly and cryptic atmosphere.

From what I understand it is also an actual Game Boy game? That's super cool as well.

This is a fun and cool entry, thanks for sharing.

Wheyy, well done! You did get a good chunk of the map, all the main parts so I can't complain about that.
Thanks for letting me know I should auto-change the scene for the ending though.

Yes, it is, if I had blank cartridges I'd be able to transfer it and play it on physical hardware. As all games are, they're just on the pre-cartridge stage.

A really interesting game. Movement felt very awkward but I really loved the aesthetic. I did find myself feeling quite confused. I was never quite sure which directions I could move / when the game reset.

You can watch my play through here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2115206073?t=00h53m50s

I will watch it, but I thought I'd made the arrows at the corners point out obvious directions (black is upcoming, white means you can immediately go). The game only resets if you die minus the opening dialogue box telling you that you can't retrace your steps, otherwise it just teleports you. I wasn't sure how to explain this without breaking what I perceived to be the rules this being my first Jam and all.
I'll probably come back and edit this once I've watched your playthrough, thanks for trying it out and recording!

I will figure out a way to indicate that you've been teleported back to the beginning.
The Spechoes wouldn't know your position on the grid I was working with so it's not like I could put a coordinate and have it make sense lore-wise. Clearly a map wouldn't help for a blind person or I'd've easily set one up.
You died via a trap door, btw, you had a lot left as you twigged onto. I wasn't sure how to make it clearer than the darkening heart and the flashing skull. You were going the right way before that, until you turned into the dead end XP

Interesting idea. I completed it, however I had no idea at some points what was going on. Was I transported back to the beginning of the dungeon, or was I just back in time, or what was that? Maybe more feedback from your actions will help understanding better what is going on.

Developer (1 edit)

That was back to the beginning, yes, since you couldn't turn around to backtrack, so I thought it would be the easiest way to go backwards. That was the 'solution' the ancient magic of the maze had formed as said the first time you go in.

Submitted

I see, that make sense. Though I’ve arrived to the same conclusion it would be cool if that part was described a bit more in the beginning, or had some feedback that you’re back (maybe a different transition?).

Developer(+1)

Fair enough, I'll think about it and add it to the edit I'm planning on uploading once the jam's over and I'm allowed to update the file.

This is a nice idea, and well implemented.

Can I suggest removing that white flash after each move?

This is what game jams are all about. Trying something out and seeing where it takes you. You've done that really well here. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Well I can't remove it, it'll either be white or black because it's a scene change, but I'll change it to black. I wasn't sure if the black would confuse since I ended up putting black with outside-the-maze stuff, but I see how it hurts since it's all dark anyway.
To be fair - and I just realised I'm gonna put this in the desc - the white is supposed to be the sound of the next step that the glasses use to take a snapshot of the environment at its brightest frame so it makes sense lorewise, but not for the seeing being blinded I suppose XD

Thanks regardless!

Thank you! ^_^

Cool idea going down the gameboy game, I was absolutely terrible at it, but it was a cool idea to explore nonetheless.

Developer

Thank you!
Was there maybe something I can help with?

A gameboy game?! REALLY? Dude, that is cool as heck! But movement is a slow of maybe to hard to read for me. Maybe this works better on an actual gameboy.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you!
I wouldn't think it would work any better since this just runs the gamefile itself (I've tried it in both GBStudio's emulator and an off-comp emulator, I can't put this on a cart.), but I put the scene-change transition speed as fast as it would go.
Sorry, trying to figure out if you're saying the font is hard to read. I think I've understood 'But movement is a slow of maybe to hard to read for me' correctly in the first part at least?
If not, let me know.
