Overall fun and playability#463.2003.200

Ranked from 20 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

Theme incorporation
There are four quests. Each one incorporates one of the themes. For instance the maze has an infinite number of possibilities (well, nearly infinite!). There's a mage trying to write a cosmic horror story, and needs help! There's a barbarian seeking solitude, and a rogue stuck in the ancient puzzle ruins!

I got stuck at the same part as Captain Coder, couldn't find anything else for the Mage. I really liked the game though, cute art, cool music, and simple but entertaining puzzles! Great job!

Developer

Thank you again sir!

Gosh, I'm wondering if I should reveal that location then. Perhaps a little more time spent looking around one of the rooms?

Let me know if that isn't enough. I'll DM you the answer.

And thank you for playing and the kind feedback. It means a lot. I felt like I put just the right amount of time into the dev to get the game completed and plenty of time for testing. Definitely some solid comments about speed and delays and such, so I'll address those after the jam.

Cheers!

Sadly, I couldn’t find the last part of the story for the magician. Solid environment and puzzles. The match game was brutal for me XD.

Thank you so much for playing and streaming. I totally take your point on FOV. You're not the first person that's said this, so I'll update this after the jam. And yeah, turn, movement speed etc.

  • Movement and rotation speeds is one of the key bits of feedback I've received. Will address that after the jam.
  • FOV also. I thought 45 degrees gave a good "old school" dungeon feel, but I think most people would prefer something larger. Again... After the jam!
  • Yes, the maze is randomly generated. It uses a recursive backtracker algorithm which results in longer dead ends (which I think looks a bit nicer). Following a wall is exactly the strategy I use!
  • Yeah, on Barry, might have been quicker to write it down. I thought it might be easier for folks tbh. I might get him to give you a hint.
  • Wow. You crushed those puzzles! I spent ages and you broke them in minutes you swine! Well done!

Thanks again for playing. Really appreciated.

I completed the game with  453 health remaining, after failing once looking for the last bookshelf, the placement of this last bookshelf is pretty good.

The game is cool, it looks and sounds nice, given the context you've got quite detailed and interactive environments and the puzzles are fun to solve.

I think the game plays too slow. First movement is too slow for my taste and I don't like that I can't advance through the dialogs at the pace I want, this is specially relevant when playing the candle game, I ended up making a wrong choice by mistake.

This is a cool entry, thanks for sharing.

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and I'm glad that bookshelf gave you that extra challenge you needed!

Yep, I'm definitely going to reduce the time between movement, and potentially move a touch quicker. It felt just right to me after hours and hours of testing. Clearly I was wrong!

Dialogue has been mentioned a few times too. I'll see if I can improve on that!

Again, thank you 😀

Nice game, quite a lot of puzzles and I like how you made them. Music + characters + writing felt really in place, setting a proper mood for the game.

Movement felt a bit unresponsive, especially in a maze.

Developer

Thank you so much! Yeah, I think a lot of people don't like the delay between steps. It was deliberate, and I can shorten or remove it. I'll try halving it to see how that feels.

Thanks again!

Yes I got the celebration!

Nice little puzzle game without any combat.

Graphics is really nice and the sound fits the game excellent.

The dialogs was a nice touch, but I would appreciate them being easier to skip, I had to re run the entire dungeon after dying from no health. The puzzles were kinda straight forward, except the story thing, it made me revisit all places again, glad the maze were locked, however I appreciated it anyway.

Movement might be my biggest issue, it sure could be a bit more snappy.

Well done!

Developer

Oh well done, and thank you for playing to completion.

If there's two takeaway bits of feedback for me, it's the movement delay between steps, and the FOV. Interesting your point on dialogue. Let me see what I can do about that. You can click on the dialogue box too, which can fly through it. I was using that a lot during testing!

Thanks again!

Nice story telling + nice art + nice puzzles + bonus point for a low FOV (even if its too low)

There is a lot to like about this one.

If I could make a wish: I would change the perspective a bit and soften the harsh stop between tiles.

Good job!

Developer

Thank you for playing and the kind feedback!

Yeah, you're not the first to mention that the FOV is a bit narrow. I was shooting for an old school look, but I think people prefer to see a bit more.

It's currently 45 degrees. I think I'll add an option to increase it up to 60. And a button that lets you look down. Something like that!

Thanks again!

You could try an oblique view frustrum (in professional photography also known as lens shift) instead of the default symmetrical.

A manipulation of the vanishing point creates an non uniform frustum and lets you see more of the ground without tilting the camera. I think you can create something like this in Godot, otherwise you just need access to the 4x4 camera matrix and change 2 values in it and pass it back to the camera.

Developer

Thanks for the advice. I'll try and find out about some of this stuff. Never heard of it before. I'm using Godot, so I'll see what I can do.

Cool variety with the puzzles but I think I'd prefer more exploration and combat, loot and treasure etc. Graphics are well done, the puzzles are good and I didn't encounter any bugs. Nice entry.

Developer

Thanks for playing. It was always intended as a puzzle game, so never going to fit in the treasure or exploration, as I wanted to make sure it worked first!

I might expand on the recursive backtracking maze to see what I can do with that another time.

Thanks again!

I like the look of the maze/dungeon but I was bothered by the camera. Maybe it's just because I've been obsessing over how I needed to increase the FOV in my entry (in order to see a bit of floor even when up against a wall) but the problem is even worse here. Relatedly, and this is a nitpick, but it bothered me that we're so much taller than the NPCs, so the camera has to look down whenever we talk.

Developer

Haha, yes, that FOV was something I spent too long thinking about too! I wanted a narrower FOV, as I thought that more represented the dungeon crawlers of old. So it's currently 45 degrees, but maybe I'll add an option to take it up to 60 or something.

And also a "look down" button! This would have been very easy tbh, but I could see ways it could get stuck looking at the floor, so I pulled it.

Appreciate the feedback. Thank you.

Easy 5 star. I think this entry is underrated. Nice doll/chibby like graphic,  music is spot on. I love puzzles and this game delivers.

Developer

You legend, thank you!

I really enjoyed making it. I feel like I could have improved on the lighting, but Godot seemed so temperamental at times that I left it once it looked ok!

Good luck with the jam.

Yeah puzzles.
Came here for a raccomendation and got what i came for.
Unfortunately i'm too dumb for barry's minigame :(
Good job!

Developer

That made me laugh! Thank you for playing.

I'm sure you can beat Barry. HInt: Look at the number of matches he leaves you with after each round.

Another hint on request 😀

Thanks for playing. Really appreciated.

Well, that was a nice surprise. The puzzles were fleshed out quite well. The graphics are charming an it controls well enough. While the music is nice, the sound effect are a bis sparse. But anyway, well done!

Developer

Ah, glad to hear you enjoyed it. Thank you so much!

I tell you what, that's the first time I've been arsed to actually use sound effects. So this is a whole new world for me! The actual rotation sound is labelled as "Sword Attack". Gives you an indication of how bad I am with audio!

Good luck with the jam :)

I finished a playthrough of this nice game. What a cute and original experience :)

But you are an evil GM I must say, hiding that bookshelf in there (its in the puzzle rooms)

well made game / 5

Developer

Haha, thank you so much! I'm glad you found it ! Yeah. I didn't want it to be too obvious where that last shelf was.

Appreciated the feedback. Thanks again :)

By the way... GM? Games Master?

Submitted(+1)

Cool idea to focus on environment puzzles. Enjoyed it a lot!

Developer

Thank you for playing! Glad you enjoyed it!

Hey,

neat game. I liked the puzzle room, except that there was a shelf, which I missed the first time. The maze was too straight forward, I think. And the movement could have used one key in a queue so you would walk a little smoother.

But everything is well implemented with neat mechanics.

Cool entry!

Developer

Glorious. Thank you. Yeah, that shelf was deliberately "hidden".

That damn maze can be so easy sometimes and fiddly others! It uses a recursive backtracking algorithm, which can produce interesting mazes. But often they're way too easy as well.

A couple of people have mentioned the walking. I'll take a look at that after the ratings.

Thanks again.
