Description
For this OST, we opted for a blend of melancholy, jazz, classical, and ambient. The DAWs that we used were Studio One and FL Studio. We ended up creating a storyboard for the game concept which we have on the project page itself.

“Last Gift” #1

This song is meant to be our title screen for the game. The concept we had in mind was to set a melancholic type feel early on in the sound track that would build onto the remaining tracks.

“Dusting Off” #2

This song starts after the very beginning cutscene. During the initial cutscene, you find out that your grandpa is severely ill. Because of that, you visit him and find out that before he became ill he was repairing an old grandfather clock. You decide that as a gift to your grandpa you’ll finish the clock that he was repairing. So you take his keys to the clock shop he owns and start traveling across town to get there. Once you get there you open up the front door of the shop to see that the shop is quite dusty. After cleaning up the shop you find a broken grandfather clock.

“A Time Keepers Lullaby” #3

This song starts after you tidy up the entire shop & find the grandfather clock your grandpa was working on. You then start walking around the shop, looking at all the things you remember from being in your grandpa's shop as a child. A sense of nostalgia fills the air around you.

“Epoch Pond” #4

Now that the shop is all tidied up you decide to begin your search for all the pieces to the grandfather clock so that you can finish repairing it for your grandpa. You travel all around town taking in the nice summer breeze while asking people where you can find the first few parts. It eventually leads you to a box next to a pond. The box contains a nice amount of parts that you’ll need to fully repair the clock. With the box now in hand you start walking back to the clock shop, but before that you sit and enjoy the pond a little.

“Out and About” #5

You notice it’s now becoming night time, as you walk back to the clock shop all the town's street lights start to turn on. You get a floating, almost ethereal feeling as the sun sets over the town. You see everyone starting to walk home, stores closing up for the night, and even some ducks waddling back to their pond. Then finally the sun sets right as you get to the front door of your grandpa’s clock shop.

“Remember” #6

You walk into the clock shop. It looks as if a clock was knocked over. You pick it up and put it back where it was. Afterwards you take the clock parts you just got and start repairing the grandfather clock. You start to remember how amazing it was repairing clocks with grandpa when you were little, but nonetheless something seemed off, almost like you were forgetting something important. Just then you pass out on the ground from a long day of work.

“Mission Completed Lick” #7

This is what plays when successfully completing a mission.

“Breezy” #9

It’s early morning you wake up in your grandpa’s clock shop with the sun hitting your face. Today you feel productive, like you’ll be able to accomplish anything you set your mind to. So you get up and make yourself a nice warm breakfast, get the rest of the clock parts you haven’t used, and repair as much of the clock as you can before needing to go back out to get more.

“Steps” #10

Since it’s still early in the day you decide to go out and get some more clock parts to repair the grandfather clock you’re working on for your grandpa. Surprisingly enough someone in town has some more of the parts you need for the grandfather clock. You tell them why you need the parts and find out they are more than willing to help you with repairing the grandfather clock.

“Picnic Waltz” #11

After getting back to the clock shop you and the townsperson get to work on repairing the grandfather clock. Time flies by as you two rebuild the clock. You both work through the afternoon all the way until dusk. While working the townsperson tells you where you can find the last clock parts you need. They tell you about a dark, off putting place, but that doesn’t stop you from repairing the clock.

“Tension” #12

The next day you wake up with an anxious feeling. Almost as you thought you were in danger. As you leave the clock shop for the day, you head towards the place the townsperson told you about. Once there you see a grand tower. With your anxiety getting worse and worse you slowly creep up to the tower's entrance.

“Times Theme” #13

As you enter the ominous tower you see a person. Their name is “Time”. They warn you of what’ll happen if you repair the clock. The sadness that it’ll bring. The destruction it will cause. Even so you insist you need the piece. “Time” refuses and proceeds to attack you. A fight begins!

“Times End” #14

You defeat “Time” and claim the last piece of the clock for yourself. After repairing the clock you bring it to your grandpa who is so happy you repaired it for him. He thanks you for doing it for him. Although something feels wrong, like there’s more to the clock than just being a simple way to measure time. Maybe “Time” was correct after all…

How does it fit the theme?
The game revolves around our protagonist fixing up his grandfather's clock shop. We incorporated clock folly throughout the whole soundtrack.

One of the most technically sound entries of the entire jam. Beautiful instruments and clear mixing. Composition wise, you were able to capture a large range of emotions to support the story. The instruments were expressively performed and with a good attention to detail. Excellent job.

Last Gift: That ticking sounds very similar to the effect I used! Very nice. :) That violin is so sweet over the piano. Great job with the melancholy vibes you were going for - nailed it.

Dusting Off: Those piano rolls feel like broom sweeps which is a great way to represent your story musically. The beauty of the chords adds to the emotional impact of this track.

A Timekeeper’s Lullaby: Nothing says nostalgia like Pachelbel’s Canon!

Epoch Pond: I can easily imagine this as one of those cinematic moments where all sound from the scene is removed and the pretty piano plays as is over the video giving you a sense of many emotions at once. I like how this track goes from slow saunter to happy vibes and finally ending on a sad note before ending contentedly.

Out and About: The pads behind the bells really ties this track together. This is a really serene sounding track that I really like the idea of it conveying night walking.

Remember: This piano waltz track feels a lot like the opening scene to the Pixar movie Up. So many emotions encapsulated throughout!

Mission Completed and Mission Failed: I really like the inclusion of stingers in your soundtrack! This would totally add to a “complete” category if that was included in the scoring.

Breezy: I really like the jazzy influences in this track. The guitar over the piano, bass, and kit gives me a lot of nostalgia for the type of music I would listen to with my dad when I was little. Excellent work on this track, this one is my favorite of all of them.

Steps: More jazz influence! There is some spring-like energy to this one that feels very good to listen to.

Picnic Waltz: I love the string melody and the piano countermelody. This feels quite classical and is very well-written in my opinion. Good job on this one!

Tension: I feel anxious listening to this! That makes this a perfect track for this moment in the gameplay since the music itself can elicit the emotions intended for the player to feel. 

Time’s Theme: Time is not being a team player here. Fighting a stranger for a clock piece is a funny concept to think about, but you’ve convinced me in this piece that this is what has to be done!

Time’s End: Bringing back that sweet violin feels so good after the end of this entire work. You have done a good job conveying the sadness and bittersweet feeling that the main character feels knowing that his grandpa is not going to be around much longer.

Overall: What a beautiful story and equally beautiful OST that you both have created. Something like this being made by two people runs the risk of sounding disjointed, but the entire project felt smooth and connected, so props to you both! Great work and thank you for sharing!

So beautiful and well written! Breezy was so cool, and the piano playing is amazing. I also like how you guys wrote the mission fanfares too! and I can't emphasize how absolutely phenomenal Time's End is.

I love how this OST is packed with emotions. Simple, touching, not overcomplicated.

Considering how many tracks OST has, there could be a little bit more variation, but for me it sounds right the way it is! Thanks for sharing such a nice music! :)

Guys I feel frustrated I wrote a big comment and accidentally exit the page and lost it... 

I'll sum up the ideas : I love the approach of evoking concepts/feelings/actions with a very few notes, or a simple chord played in a certain way (Mission Succeeded/Failed works wonders with the atmosphere you created, Tension  also does this). I actually love this exercise and often start composing this way, the rest is decoration and style you can say. If you have the time you may want to check my submission to this previous jam, I went that same road, in my own different style of course, but I see resemblances.. :) 

My favorites were Last gift, Remember, Panic Waltz and Time's Theme if I had to choose some :) 

I also wrote that I could have expected more variations, modulations, or accompaniments at some point in each song but that's a personal taste. (Time's Theme actually filled this expectation). It can help maintaining momentum somehow while keeping the main flow simple as you did for the whole thing. All in all, these 14 tracks makes like a massive starting point for a really longer game and soundtrack. I'm saying you've build a lot of cool materials to play with! And that's fucking great :D

Yes, this a beautiful yet simple ost that would work well with a very story driven game, like a visual novel for example. Great amount of nice work :)

Though I personally felt the tracks could've used more layers or production, I realized the simplicity could go well with a certain genre of games. Game with a simple yet touching story just like your soundtrack. It feels like a collection of fun musical ideas, like a box of toys. Very heartwarming to listen to.

It's impressive that you made a REAL complete OST. So many tracks all consistent, but each one that expresses a different feeling of specific moments in the game. Even the mission complete and fail jingle. Amazing

You know, this might be a small thing, but I appreciated how you didn't stick to one piano sound throughout. I mention it because it's an example of how you carefully developed the mood and atmosphere of each piece separately despite the large number of tracks. Really awesome job! :)

Beautiful soundtrack. Assembling 14 tracks in nine days is impressive, let alone composing something as touching as this while under pressure. I was worried that such a high volume of tracks would dilute the substance. I am glad to be proven wrong.

SO EMOTIONAL! every track really captured feeling of the settings you described, and you totally succeeded in weaving a coherent story through music (14 tracks too? you're absolutely crazy)

you are a brilliant pianist, and you did an amazing job composing these tracks :)))

I think Vito and I were lucky because we bounced ideas off of each other, helped each other out when we were stuck, and we both were able to actually play the piano so that's a plus. Also just working with another person in general made it so we could get a lot more tracks done in our 5 day stretch.

Nice easy-listening OST with a lot of variety, and wow, that’s an amazing amount of content! And hey, I’m always down for a bit of jazz. I like that you used the literal clock in a few tracks, but didn’t overdo it. Could very well see this in a narrative game. Nice job!

I have no clue how it got so loud. Everything else was almost exactly -15 LUFS and this was -17.5 and it's still the loudest somehow.

I assume you played all the piano yourself? In that case it's impressive for a 14 track OST. 

The style is constant and uniform, which is very good! I can totally imagine this game to be in a hand-drawn arts style because the soundtrack is rather minimalistic. Some songs reminded me of certain Zelda Games.

Thank you! Yes Vito and I did play all the piano parts ourselves with a bit of quantizing. We also got a live guitarist on the "Breezy" track so that was really fun. While making all the tracks we tried following a story line so that's why they're really consistent. Thanks again <3

I'm a big sucker for anything jazz related, so I instantly enjoyed this. Favorite track is definitely Breezy.

Also, A Time Keepers Lullaby is suspiciously reminiscent of Canon in D...
