Description
Hello, we're Jack and Lane from Hoop Snake Games, and here's our submission for the CRUNCHTIME 2 jam, with the Cyberpunk theme! The concept made us think of music with dark, ominous sounding synthesizers and jazz music (think noir films like Blade Runner!), so that's the feeling we tried to capture with the soundtrack. We also threw some heavily distorted electric guitar in there for good measure. All songs were composed in Reaper.

How does it fit the theme?
Welcome to the Cyber Metro - This is the first song on the soundtrack, this would be the game's theme, playing on the title screen. It introduces the game's tone with the dark, sad sounding progression and an aggressive guitar segment. The cyberpunk setting we're envisioning is dirty, depressing, and dangerous: we wanted to capture the feeling right off the bat.

Subway Sneaking - This song would accompany a stealth mission in a subway tunnel. The droning synths keep the player in a constant state of tension as they narrowly avoid enemy patrols.

Next Station - This song would be used to introduce a player to a newly unlocked area. The almost inquisitive sounding saxophone solo encourages the player to explore and to discover more about their new surroundings.

Here we go.  Going in blank without reading anything.

Track 1 - Mysterious opening. I like it. Getting a bit of a noir vibe from the choices in sound design. It all sounds dark. Love how muffled that kickdrum/bass is. I quite like how that beat works here. Nice guitar too and lovely glidey synth.

Track 2 - Getting a bladerunner feel from how this one opens. Then changes a bit more to a mysterious vibe again. I like it. The melody works really well here. I like that automation on the synth as well.

Track 3 - Nice opening ambience. Again, lovely effects on the instruments to make them sound old. This has a really cinematic quality to it. Love it. Ooh, nice sax. Now it must be noir :D

Great work! Really enjoyed the combination of synthy and acoustic tones. Very nice. I find it difficult to pick a favourite on this one. It really works best as one coherent whole.

Really nice tracks, I love the "metro atmosphere". The first track is probably my favourite, it felt so ominous but weirdly also kind of calming to me, like something I would maybe also listen to if outside of the composing jam^^

I also really like the cover and the idea for the different sections of the game and them being connected by the cyber city metro!

Well done :)

Guitar leads and cyberpunk go hand in hand! Nice drum timbre too.

The sneak level track is great, and would fit nicely to a stealth mission!

Oh, and the sax in Next Station is so nice! Saxophone leads like these always make me think of a neon lit dark alley where a small bar awaits their next patron, or something like that :D

I like electric quitar in the "welcome" track  with background syth, sounds like Enni Morricone meets J.M. Jarre ^_^. Good job.

I really like the dark, ominous, mysterious atmosphere you created. It all feels very noir especially with the sax at the end. Good job!

The last track was my favorite. It felt very conclusive with the rising organ-like synth but ending on a mysterious note like the protagonist blending into a crowd and returning to anonymity. Sax sells.

Actually listened before reading your description and what struck me was the ominous tones in building your songs and also the lofi drums in the first track + the horns in the end, so based on your description it seems like you nailed your vision!

Liked the use of those jazz / noir elements to maybe get away from the often exclusively electronic, "throbbing" feel that cyberpunk elicits (I say this as somebody who approached tracks like that lol). Good work!

I really like the melodies you used coupled with the quite condescending ambiance, it really creates a dim neon-lighted subway picture in my head.

I like how your tracks blend in with the sound scape you've created. It almost seems as if it was diegetic music, like you would hear a sax player in the subway. Nice entry!

Really enjoyed the composition of these tracks! Great progression, and it’s fun to hear the mood develop as different instruments come in and out. The overall vibe felt gloomy, sad but disappointed: “this city is broken, but we can still fix it.”

I’m always a sucker for rain sounds and ambiance, too!

One thing I notice is that all the songs sound a little boxed-in, like the full frequency space isn’t being utilized to the fullest. Some sparkly highs and deep bass would go a long way to expanding the range and giving the tracks more contrast.

Love this smoother take on cyberpunk! Really does capture a stealth vibe in that second track. Brilliant addition of sax in the third! What VST or library is that?

Great work!

All of these give me such a cool and moody feeling, straight out of a cyberpunk detective kind of game. 1 and 3 especially with the guitar and sax solo respectively. So jazzy and cool!

P.S. I love the cover!

I thought of Blade Runner *straight* away, then saw it in your commentary. Very atmospheric and moody, I like it!

Eerily nice theme with the dist guitars in the intro piece, nicely done too using L and R channel. Good use of sound effects too in the last piece. That sax solo is beautiful too!
