Hey Hex! I thought Turritopsis was a good game that told a really nice story. I felt for Oliver and was relieved I got the good ending my first try. ^^ Your art is so pretty and fit the overall solemn yet hopeful theme of the game really well.

Have you thought about making more of this after the jam ends? I feel like there's plenty of room for expansion! Personally I'd like to see more background info on Oliver, such as how he discovered he was trans, what was his mom's initial reaction to it, and more about Oliver's school life. Also, I would have LOVED to see Oliver going out to the mall and having a good time -- he deserved it after all the bullying/unhappy situations we read through!

Nice work tackling such a heavy topic! You kinda throw us into an emotional story without any build up or introduction to the characters, so even though it IS an emotional story, we don't have any connection to the character. I think it's really important that you're tackling this and sharing these experiences with people (whether they are personally yours or someone else's story you're telling), but right now it kind of jumps from point-to-point with no transitions in between. What you have is lovely, but if you're wanting to build on it even more, making the story flow better would be a way to do that. Also, unfortunately, it didn't hit the 10-minute requirement for me, so adding in those additional pieces would help with that as well.

Overall, powerful story -- thanks for sharing!

I have to say that I really appreciate that you have taken the jam theme in such a unique way. Overall it's a simple game with a very sensitive and delicate story and I'm glad I got the good ending. I would have liked to know more about Oliver. ^_^

Played this. I'm not sure if it's the case, but I'm never comfortable criticizing games if they are about someone's experience or auto-biographic, so I'll keep it as light as I can. Please feel free to ignore me, this is just my opinion and taste.

Overall, even within the simplicity, the game was too dry and not very engaging in the text (which is pretty much all it has). There was not a lot for me to get attached to character-wise since it's only a handful of isolated situations out of context. Conceptually I support it, but as a character for me to like, no one here did much for me, it was just too short and barebones.

TL;DR as a game, I find it lacking. If it's mean to express someone's personal situation, it's not my place to criticize.

I'm happy I got the good ending. A touching and personal story, and one that I know must've thematically been difficult to make. The dialogue could use some editing, but I think the core concepts are there. The game fits well with 'rebirth'. Subtle and good use of sound. I would've liked more on Oliver's journey and their internal thoughts. Hope to see more from you too, as a creator.

I think the concept of a story about a character going through the early stages of his transitioning is really fascinating and does fit in with the whole rebirth theme of this game jam. The execution itself was pretty good if not for a few caveats. The dialogue can feel pretty stilted at times. For example, it's a tad awkward for the mother to come into the scene just to say, “You’re still going on about this gender stuff?” unprompted with no context why she said it in the first place. A lot of the dialogue follows a similar format to the example I provided. I feel like if the characters had more of a (pardon the pun) transition into their lines it would feel a lot more natural.

Aside from that, the writing is good, I can see it striking a chord with other trans people who see themselves in Oliver. The soft background noise is also a nice touch as it makes you feel like you're part of the scene. One last thing to note, the art style of both the characters and the textbox clashes a bit. It's odd seeing an RPG styled text box in a heavily illustrated game.

Overall, a pretty nice game with a sweet story.

Thanks for the review! Yeah, I didn't really have time to worry about the text boxes or the font, so sorry about that. If it gets an update in the future, I'll do that. I tried to make it seem in some cases like you're tuning in to the middle of a conversation, but I guess that didn't come out right.

I really enjoyed this game. I was able to relate to Oliver on so many levels. I especially appreciated the "bad" ending. It wasn't a tragic downer, but it was still just as realistic. It's a common experience for many trans people, one that needs to be told.
