I am developing RuneMire, a 2D top-down RPG heavily inspired by the classic, peaceful eras of games like Tibia and RuneScape.
www.runemire.com
My goal is to build the continent of Aeterna into an expansive open world that fosters a warm, tight-knit community.

I am handling 100% of the programming, systems design, and backend networking in Godot. What I need is a dedicated world builder to bring the environment to life.

The Role: I am looking for a Level Designer / Map Builder. You do not need to draw pixel art from scratch. I have already invested in a massive, premium library of high-quality 2D asset packs (the complete Epic RPG World series, covering everything from grass lands and villages to oceans, crypts, and volcanoes). https://rafaelmatos.itch.io/epic-rpg-world-collection

Your primary role will be taking these existing assets and using Tiled to expand the map, craft beautiful transitions between biomes, and design towns, dungeons, and landscapes.

What you will do:

  • Design and layout expansive, hand-crafted 2D maps using the Tiled map editor.
  • Focus on organic detailing—placing clutter, trees, paths, and landmarks so the world feels lived-in and intentional rather than procedurally generated.
  • Collaborate with me on the geography of the world, designing cozy villages, player-housing plots, and of course your danger areas

What I bring to the table:

  • All programming, UI/UX implementation, and database management in Godot.
  • Access to cohesive 2D assets ready to be mapped.
  • A clear, steady vision for the game mechanics and community structure.

Who you are:

  • You have a good eye for spatial design, color composition, and environmental storytelling.
  • You understand the charm of classic, grid-based MMORPGs and want to create a world players can get lost in.
  • You are comfortable working inside a tile editor (like Tiled) and understanding layer management (base grounds, collision layers, overhanging elements).

If you love the idea of quietly building a massive, peaceful world piece by piece, I’d love to chat. Send me a message with a little about yourself and any examples of maps or levels you’ve put together!

I'll pay 100-200 depending on your quality. With more payments as we expand the world.

Hey. I'm possibly interested, but how many map designs do you need ? Are you paying $100-200 USD each? Do you process transactions with Zelle or Paypal? I haven't used Tiled in many years but I'm willing to re-download it again and learn the software. It could be something I work on in between work for my other freelance clients. I'm an Aseprite pixel artist and here's my portfolio (even though it sounds like you don't need me drawing new assets currently). Aseprite has a tilemap feature, but I'm sure Tiled is a bit different (possibly better) regarding the tilemapping process. I'm also learning low poly software like Blockbench and Crocotile3D, so overall I'm interested in learning new software and branching my game dev art skills.

Yes I can do PayPal or Zelle. The asset dev did a good job setting up the tileset rules etc I’ll add you on discord.

Hi! This projects sounds rather cool. Are you still looking for a level designer? I have been working a game&level designer fot 3 years now. I always used Tiled when it comes to dev 2D levels, so I can start right away, once we have clarified a bit more the scope and the details of the request :)

Wr could run a small test to see if we collaborate well together! That is totally fine for me.

Feel free to reach out in discord _scr_ and we can schedule a call if you are interested in my profile!

sounds great! Let’s connect via discord

Hi! I saw your post for RuneMire and am highly interested in helping you build the continent of Aeterna. I have strong experience in 2D top down level design and am highly proficient with the Tiled map editor including strict layer management collision setups and crafting organic transitions. I love the classic MMORPG aesthetic and excel at environmental storytelling by placing intentional clutter and landmarks to make the world feel lived in. Since you are using Godot for the engine will we be importing the Tiled maps directly via an addon like 'unwrapped/godot tiled importer or exporting them as standard JSON files?

Hey!  I'm genuinely excited about this project. The classic Tibia/RuneScape inspiration, the open world continent, the tight-knit community vision — this is exactly the kind of game I'd love to help build.

I'm a game developer with experience in 2D games and level/world design. I understand the value of organic, hand-crafted maps — the kind where every corner feels placed with intention rather than generated. I'm comfortable working in Tiled, managing layers (ground, collision, decorations, overhead), and handling biome transitions that feel natural.

I've already sent you a friend request on Discord — my ID is minian_toy. Feel free to accept and we can chat there directly. I'd love to see the asset packs you're working with and talk about the geography of Aeterna.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi there!

RuneMire sounds like a fantastic project. The inspiration from the classic, peaceful eras of games like Tibia and RuneScape is incredibly charming, and building the continent of Aeterna into a warm, tight-knit community is a great vision.

I saw your post looking for a Level Designer. While I am not reaching out to fill the map-building role, I wanted to pitch my services as a Project Manager. Since you are handling 100% of the Godot programming, systems design, and backend networking, you are carrying an enormous workload.

I help indie developers organize their development cycles so they can focus on what they do best. Whether you need assistance on the small side (just a few hours a week to organize tasks) or a large side engagement (managing the entire production pipeline), I offer a variety of services to help you control the creative vision and process. Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that RuneMire actually crosses the finish line and launches someday.

Here is how I can support your vision for RuneMire:

  • Pipeline Management: Organizing your massive "Epic RPG World" asset library and setting up efficient workflows for the map builder you are looking to hire.
  • Team Coordination: Handling the communication, task assignment, and feedback loop for your new level designer, freeing you up to stay completely focused on the backend and UI/UX.
  • Creative Vision Control: Acting as a sounding board and documentation lead to ensure your mechanics, pacing, and community structures remain cohesive as the world expands.
  • Milestone Tracking: Breaking down the development of Aeterna into manageable, actionable sprints to keep the momentum steady and prevent developer burnout.

Building a massive, peaceful world piece by piece is a huge undertaking, and having a solid process in place makes all the difference. I would love to bring some organizational firepower to RuneMire to help you achieve your goals.
