Nice entry! The visuals really shine. The mix of 2D and 3D gives the game a unique look, and the animationsare great. The gameplay feels smooth, while shooting is satisfying, and the controls respond right away. The enemies act differently from each other, which keeps things interesting! The house looks great but feels too big a bit...
My biggest issue: With no sound effects or music, the world feels oddly empty. Even a few simple sounds would make it come alive and give the fights more energy. It also is missing an ending...? I get the connection to the them, but there is no special take on it in my opinion... A few more story or visual touches would help tie it all together.
However, overall, itβs a polished and promising game that only needs sound and a proper ending to really stand out.
yeah time sort of does that when 36hrs and 2 people. We were focused on getting our game to function first.
Really nice visuals (I explored the whole map) and the enemies looked so cool! But the gameplay was kind of basic and I would have wished the was a bit more of a reason to actually explore the map (which looked really cool).
I am absolutely torn. This could have been one of the best games in the jam. The gameplay is smooth, the shooting is cool, controls fast and precise. There's enemy variety, not just in looks but in behavior. The camera angle is not disorienting (could be a bit further maybe, but that's not a huge issue). The graphics I love. I'm a big fan of 2d + 3d. The animations are cool, especially the shot looks powerful and meaty. The 3d models are properly oldschool, fitting the pixely grandpa and monsters.
Then there are some weird decisions. The house is a bit too big- at some point I went exploring, and I think maybe enemies couldn't find me? You could use it like "now the monsters are invading the kitchen, and after that they are invading the gallery", and then the huge house would become more of an asset :) The random monsters attacking the house don't feel like "guests", so I guess you could have gone harder on the theme.
Then there are two things that just don't work. The most obvious is lack of sound. At first I checked my headphones, because it made no sense to me that the game that looked this good had zero sounds! There are many places where you can get sounds and music for free (freesound.org, and mobygratis.com come to mind). Sound does wonders for atmosphere and player feedback. The other is that enemies stop spawning after wave 4. Some kind of "you win" screen would be great. And instead I kept waiting for some bad guys to show up.
Having no audio felt jarring.
Sound effects aren't just for aesthetic reasons: they're important because it helps the player understand that their control input mapped onto game play (hearing the gun when you fire vs just seeing it).
Would have loved some audio, I managed to get to the fourth wave but after that the enemies kept bugging (spawning in walls sometimes). Good game for a 4 days development period tho, well done!
Design reminds me of 2000s internet memes, which I love, but, sadly, there is no audio :( My record is 4 waves, which I don't think is very good.
Grandpa feels very polished and fun to play as, overall gameplay is really fun. It's a shame the sound effects don't work. I feel like a shooting sound would've added so much. I got kinda stuck at wave 4 when enemies stopped showing up but until then I was having a great time :D
Yeah we fixed that bug if you want in our description with the link to the working version if you would like.
I'll check it out tomorrow :)
Just played the fixed version and had a lot of fun! I made it to wave 13 and it was getting very chaotic. The huge amount of enemies made it start to lag a little bit and they trapped me in a corner. Great game now that it's fixed :D
The game was really cool overall. The audio part really does hold it back like many others said--but i didn't think it was groundbreaking enough to make the game not fun or anything. exploring the areas was really cool even though i couldn't interact with anything (and those 3d trees looked genuinely amazing). I also found it really funny how a guy that looks like he's in his 80s or something is running around this much lol. One really thing i noticed is that sometimes the enemies take really long to come at you--no idea if that's intentional or not. But still, overall, i had a lot of fun killed dark circle dudes, lol
Great job!
Keep it up!
The only thing holding this back is the sound. This is so good.
omfg, gj 0_0
CRT shader look awesome with this art and map. But cant finish, at wave 4, enemies always spawn in walls T_T
yeah there is a spawning bug. We linked the hotfix in our description if you would like to see how far you can go.
Does not run very well on browser, but otherwise looks pretty okay. SFX aren't working and you have to hold down right click the whole time to aim. Not terrible.
I don't know who "forced" you to make art, but it's awesome. Grandpa is badass!
very great submission
I like the art style of your game it's very unique and cool .. but The music and sfx don't seem to be working.
