Have you been waiting weeks/months for your payout? Please reply here!

Hi everybody,

There is a very clear problem at itch and hundreds of us have not been paid our money owed. You may or may not be aware of a game which was here on itch called Vintage Story. The game developers claim that itch owes them a six-figure amount!

I, just like many of you, have not received a payout in 86 days despite multiple requests and multiple emails to support (who do not respond at all).

A thread named

IMPORTANT: Payout Or Tax-Related Issues? Post Support Ticket # Here! (NO THREADS)

was created to resolve this, but it gets ignored by itch, so I’m not sure if it’s even worth posting there.

The unprofessional nature of how itch is handling their payouts is no longer acceptable in 2025, given the fact that itch’s closest competitors get game devs their money owed in 7 days.

This has nothing to do with NSFW games or payment processor issues. This stems from a fundamental problem with itch and how they handle their payouts. They are trying to run a huge indie platform like it’s a blog from 2007. Like trying to run a Walmart in a garage. If your support team is small, hire more staff. If your finance department can’t cope with the influx, hire more staff.

I have reached out to The Verge as well as some high profile influencers in the Video Game community, and am looking for your stories of how long you have been waiting to be paid, and when the last time support actually contacted you.

Have you posted in the thread above and received your payout? Have support completely ignored you? Have you been waiting over 2 months since requesting? Please let me know

Much appreciated,

Jimmy

Hello Jimmy. Thanks for pointing out the harsh truth.

This year something happened to itch and now I've joined the ranks of unpaid developers. My previous payments didn't take more than 2 weeks and current one is reaching to almost a month (27 days)

Now I've completely stopped the payments and am looking for alternatives for getting my payments, do you know any other platform like patreon and subscribestar?

thank you for your input. I hope itch sorts this out soon, but whether they do or not, their reputation is irreparably damaged at this point.

I’ve been listing my stuff on Patreon for now and will be looking around to find other places, as I cannot risk using itch any more

bumping, as people really need to know this

Have you guys considered having 'direct to you' payments enabled?

I've been using itch.io payouts for a while at first, and didn't have any trouble, but waiting for the money for a few weeks can be stressful at times, so I changed it to 'direct to you', and everything is going smoothly, plus there's no additional fees this way.

I do not want to use direct to you. There are far too many problems, and it doesn't make sense for a lot of indie devs on here. I totally get that it's useful to some, but it isn't a solution to itch holding so many people's money

Oh, I didn't know there's any potential drawbacks to 'direct to you'. What would be not optimal in your case while using the 'direct to you'?

Loads of reasons, but the two people mostly want to avoid is being doxxed. I go by an online name (obviously) and I don't really want people knowing my real name, which you'd easily be able to find with direct to you.

There's also the complications of fraud.... I'll avoid that thank you :)

In the cases where the devs have registered a business, then that's waaay more suited to them

Thanks for pointing these out!

Sorry to butt in but potentially important note:

With the “direct to you” option, you’re also responsible for reporting VAT on sales to the EU (this applies regardless of where you are, as long as your customer is in the EU).

So taxes / VAT in general is a whole thing to be aware of as well.

Thanks for sharing this information!

This is the part that worries me about the direct option. How are most of us supposed to keep track of the hundreds of different withholding laws that are all over the place? I’m not really a business. Like many of the creators here, I don’t have legal and financial teams to manage records if Itch.io wouldn’t do it. There’s no way for each of us to know what’s required for every possible person who sends a few dollars along. But it’s normal to accept money for appreciated work.

This version of the topic lasted way longer than the previous one I replied to. But, like I said there, I don't think that complaints about one of itch's two payment systems are justified unless you give an actual effort at setting up direct to me. Pizza Doggy said he did it and has not had problems. It is more work, but do you want your money or not? I still propose the minimum withdrawal amount, as this will filter out all the small payouts and free up itch staff to review the "I live off this money" people's payouts.

regardless of whether you say “use direct to you” or not, it’s doesn’t solve the problem , does it? No, it doesn’t. I agree that the minimum withdrawal should be raised, but the fact is simple: Itch Corp hasn’t paid people, they’ve kept the money. So again, regardless of what you say, the complaint is clearly justified! They simply cannot keep OUR money, it’s morally, ethically and legally wrong!

I moved here less than a year ago to avoid having my assets taken down by Gumroad after their sudden TOS change overnight on a Friday, pushed by Visa/MasterCard to ban NSFW content. Of course, sites like OF and PH were unaffected, and Gumroad was extremely vague about what counted as "NSFW", leading to removals of completely unrelated assets.

Until recently, all 11 of my payouts came through without issue. Now, on my 12th, and largest so far, they're holding the funds, just like many others have reported.

Unfortunately, I'll have to move over to Jinxxy. This will be even more of a hassle than leaving Gumroad, since I've uploaded many more assets here. On top of that, itch gave me the flexibility to choose when to request payouts, while Jinxxy only offers fixed automated payouts every Thursday, which isn’t ideal for me.

At this point, I have to assume the money I'm owed here is simply lost.

Update:
My pending payout has just gone through, after 26 days.

I'm still considering moving away from itch unless the situation gets resolved completely. and new measures are implemented so this doesn't happen again, and more transparency from itch's part.

Just wanted to give a small update that I've been paid today finally, after like 30 days. Now I can re-open all my download links.

I received an update from itch regarding the situation, and frankly, I don’t understand why they couldn’t have just made a public statement rather than keep everybody in the dark. It’s not a good look.

A number of issues have occurred over the last 30 days that have contributed to significant payout delays for many users.

Recently, a conservative religious group known as Collective Shout applied extensive pressure on a number of marketplaces for selling adult content, and as a result we’ve had to deal with the falloff and blowback from their actions causing difficulties with our ability to operate efficiently.

Additionally, while we have been working to get caught up, we have also been experiencing server instability as a result of a mass number of botted accounts stressing our servers, which has contributed further to the delays. We are currently actively debugging the bot problem.

We are working to get back to normal operation as soon as possible, and appreciate your patience and understanding.

I have seen a gradual increase in payout times as well the past two years even before this issue emerged and my content isn't NSFW.

But I am okay with it, mostly. I know itch staff are limited and that they're struggling with a lot of pressure in many directions. I want to say I'm grateful the platform exists and if it will help, I am open to raising the % of my sales given in support of itch staff from say, 10% where it currently is to 15-20%, which is still small compared to the 30% norm on the likes of Steam, Apple App Store, etc.

I believe leafo and other people working here are trying to fix this somehow and I'm rooting for it all to work out, as I still like itch a lot.
