I do not want to use direct to you. There are far too many problems, and it doesn't make sense for a lot of indie devs on here. I totally get that it's useful to some, but it isn't a solution to itch holding so many people's money

Oh, I didn't know there's any potential drawbacks to 'direct to you'. What would be not optimal in your case while using the 'direct to you'?

Loads of reasons, but the two people mostly want to avoid is being doxxed. I go by an online name (obviously) and I don't really want people knowing my real name, which you'd easily be able to find with direct to you.

There's also the complications of fraud.... I'll avoid that thank you :)

In the cases where the devs have registered a business, then that's waaay more suited to them

Thanks for pointing these out!

Sorry to butt in but potentially important note:

With the “direct to you” option, you’re also responsible for reporting VAT on sales to the EU (this applies regardless of where you are, as long as your customer is in the EU).

So taxes / VAT in general is a whole thing to be aware of as well.

Thanks for sharing this information!

This is the part that worries me about the direct option. How are most of us supposed to keep track of the hundreds of different withholding laws that are all over the place? I’m not really a business. Like many of the creators here, I don’t have legal and financial teams to manage records if Itch.io wouldn’t do it. There’s no way for each of us to know what’s required for every possible person who sends a few dollars along. But it’s normal to accept money for appreciated work.
