Very fun concept of course hehe, but also well executed and really nice art! For some reason I an issue getting used to the control, but I think that might have been because two directional keys need to be held down to be used and the other two work as toggles. But overall really nice experience :)

This is so creative and such a nice concept, it's already very polished and everything works perfectly. With some more content and a bit of refinement of the controls this can easily become a full release! Great job!

Really nice looking game! The controls are a bit hard at first but after a while you do get used to them. Nice music choice goes really well with the atmosphere and impeccable art! Felt like the rock hitbox was a bit on the large size at times but I'm probably just really bad at the game x) only managed 15 for now. A lot of attention to details, great work!

Interesting look and idea. I like it.

love the look of this game. I'm assuming models with shaders like Sundler said, but if not, you did a fantastic job fooling me.

Developer

Thanks for playing Morse! All assets used are 2D sprite sheets, layered on top of each other to create the illusion of depth using a technique called sprite stacking.
If courious, there is a more detailed explanation of the process on the @Simsure_ Twitter page (the programmer behind the game).

This is a really good concept and well executed!  Every element is strong.  The artwork (I'm guessing 3D with pixel shaders?), music, sound effects are just excellent.  It looks and feels great.

But the glaring issue is difficulty.  It's a very, very tricky game.  Targeting the enemy ships is so hard.  I would make the shooting mechanism much easier and start off with static targets.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks Sundler, actually is a super fun technique called sprite stacking, that use layers of 2D sprite to give the illusion of a 3D model.
Yes, dealing with enemy ship is complex, we will work on something else to make them more interesting to fight.

Good to hear.  It would have been a shame to flush such a great prototype... down the drain! 😎

Game feels really great and music works well with the battel feeling. Just feels a little bit "too easy right" in the current state i let myself sink at sometime, since it felt like it go on for ever... but prototype is quite strong with some more polish the gameplay make feel really amazing.

Developer

Thank you, unexpectedly some player found it very hard and other too easy, maybe we can work on some difficulty settings to give more challenge to the best players like you 💪.

This is a good, cute, and polished game. Once I figured out the controls, it was great fun. The game design is especially interesting: The center of the Whirlloop offers high risk, high reward.

Great game! I really liked the art !

It would be awesome to have events like kraken tentacles emerging from the water, trying to slam both your ship and enemy ships while you fight them off for bigger rewards. (Your team name made me think of that).

For the short amount of time of the JAM it's a really cool game, GG !

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks, i was veeery tempted to add some sort of kraken, but a tentacle in sprite stacking is complex, i want to give it some research and testing to make it look cool, maybe for a future version!

Great game! It took me a bit to get used to which arrow keys were turn and which were speed, but once I figured that out swerving in and out was a treat.

Got to to 45 ish range then struggled to break into the 50's. I couldn't figure out how to get the enemy ships in range of my cannons consistently.

I'd love to see a version with a few more enemy types to dodge/interact with!

Developer

Great record!
Thank you, the cannons range was a late change in development, the idea was to require the player to be at the same "height" or above the enemy to be in range to shot them, like if you are deeper in the whirlpool you cannot shoot at them because they are way up,  it make a bit tricky to fight correctly, so maybe we can look for something else in a future version.
