Which Theme did you choose?

Song of the Sea

How did you implement your chosen Theme in your game?
We chose “Song of the Sea” and set our horror game entirely underwater in a sunken palace, where a ritual for immortality went wrong. The sea holds dark secrets, and the player slowly uncovers the truth through eerie exploration.

Did you implement any of your Theme's Bonus Challenges, and if so, which ones?
Yes!
– The High Seas: The player swims through underwater scenes.

You managed to get quite a few game mechanics in a jam that were pretty neat. Art style was a bit inconsistent but had some cool stuff in it. I agree with others that even if you all created something rushed by yourself (heck even in MS Paint) it would give it a bit more personality. With that said though, you created a lot of interesting mechanics in your game and put together a neat project with some cool horror elements. Congrats, well done!

When it comes to using AI I think that even really rushed self made artwork  would give your projects a lot more personality. Other than that the story was nice. The mechanic for hiding a preserving sanity was nice concept and the mechanic for carving up enemies and getting their oxygen is straight up unhinged in a good way :D

You have a nice idea here. The intro is nice, nice effort BTW. The mechanics to obtain oxygen is clever too

Thanks! Glad you liked it :)

The soundscape in this game felt very creepy - there's a good choice of background effects and ambience.
As others have stated, it would've been 100x better if you would've used art in the form of pre-made assets, or even just some quick doodles, instead of generated imagery. But I understand why that might have been the only viable option at the time.
Overall, I really appreciate the effort that's been put in the game in spite of the constraints. Keep making more games!

I'm glad you liked the sound :) Regarding the art, we will keep it in mind for future projects. Thank you for the feedback!

I like the idea and concept youre going for here. Its super unique, I think some of the movement can be sped up and smoothed out a little bit.
I agree with a few others on making the art style more consistent, Just so everything is more on theme with what you want. But over all this was a fun little experience! Keep going :)

Thank you for the feedback !

I think you had a very clever idea.  The controls are easy to get into, and the decision to cut open the monsters trying to kill you so you can get oxygen is a great idea!  I like the hide feature too.  I saw the comments about generative AI.  I think it can work to be consistent.  If the animation artifacts are taken out with a paint program, I think the art would work great that way.  This is a good concept and great job doing it.    Game dev is super hard and you put together a clever concept and story.

Developer

Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it :) And yeah, if we use AI again, we’ll definitely try to implement what you said and clean things up better.

Interesting implementation of the theme and pretty neat sound effects. Gameplay is not too ambitious so pretty decent submision. There are some bugs that definatly needs fixing like the image that shows up when stabbing an enemy bugs out and stays on the screen forever. Also I don't want to be prejudice but you should really avoid using AI generated art. It gives you an inconsistent art and in most cases scare a lot of players away. I want to encourage you to try and cook something yourself even if at first it looks kinda bad. With every attempt it will get better and better.

Developer

Thanks a lot for the feedback! You're right about the image bug... it’s actually meant to be clicked again using the mouse to continue, but we should’ve clearly mentioned that in the instructions. Sorry about the confusion! If the screen got stuck and you couldn’t play further because of that, I just uploaded a YouTube video showing the full gameplay in case you'd like to check it out.

As for the art, this was our first time making a game, and we got so caught up in learning and putting everything together that we didn't manage to create the visuals ourselves in time.

Ahh don't beat yourself up about it, its common for devs to run out of time. I once couldn't even complete a game in time to submit. Hope to meet you again in some next jam!

Interesting game, I liked the sound effects you used and the music was pretty scary, but there were some bugs like sometimes I couldn't unlock a door, and the keypad doesn't do anything, but other than that it's a pretty good game.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thnx for playing ! To unlock the door , you need to read all the text(by hovering the cursor over the walls) going forward... And then come back to the door to unlock it. I hope that helps, try playing it again if you got time... There's much more interesting thing awaiting after that!

Developer (1 edit)

I uploaded a short gameplay video. It might clear up what happened during your run. Thanks again for playing!

Interesting game! I liked the story section at the start and the way you got oxygen back was cool. The jump scare was nice as well!

Developer

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the story, and we are happy the jump scare landed too!

Congrats on putting this together during the short jam time. I found the AI art added a surreal element to the experience which was not a bad thing. I got stuck not so far into the game, but there were some interesting things here

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! Happy that you found it interesting.  Curious though, where did you get stuck? We are open to improving that bit in the future!
