The Jam approaches -- what's on your mind?

Hi there!

The beginning of the jam is approaching and I'm wondering what other participants are thinking about, and what they're looking forward to.

I'm pretty comfortable working in Decker but I'm not much of a writer so my personal challenge for this jam is to write my own (short) VN this time. I've got a loose idea so far!

For anyone dropping by who would like to talk about their own projects, now or later into the jam:

  • Have you used Decker before? Is there anything you're not sure how to do?
  • Are you working with familiar stories and characters? Or branching out into new ideas?
  • Anything else you're thinking about for this Jam?

Hi I made my first decker game a few weeks ago and it's nice, I've taken a break from working on projects until the jam starts. None of my games have been very writing focused so I'd really like to try it. My only ideas so far are very loose, so hopefully I'll have more concrete concepts prepared when the jam starts. I usually make my games within a week or two so it'll be different for me to stick with one for a month long jam. I hope everyone's development goes well.

hi its good to see you!!!! I'm going to make?? a black and white decker vn (I usually opt for colors but these characters are boldest in b/w... but now that I think about it making a peachy pink sweetheart tone with the Extreme Difficult Personal Goal of "light hearted fluffy sweetheart romcom" would be a real challenge for me)

I'll probably use that sweetheart romcom idea? I might use a trope ive been thinking about since reading a few BL raws w/ it where one character bc of internalized homophobia gay panics and says smth really cruel to the boy he has a really unique tenderness with but that he's TERRIFIED about when confronted with the fact they seem to have special feelings for each other and shuts himself and the other guy down and then they meet in the future and the shitty guy is the one to now anxiously pursue the guy he hurt (who is still quietly in love with him at all these years).

as you can see simple silly fluffy tenderness is a high hurdle for me... 😭 but I think using BL tropes that touched me is a good start.

I'm using the characters from here https://swanchime.itch.io/remora

I definitely have plans! Very experienced with Decker, and in my ongoing Decker zine series zine of Millie I've got a recurring kind of fictional world that I call the "cool spaceship universe" so I'm thinking of doing a VN in that setting. I've made a few Decker VNs before, although my bigger projects tend to be more along the "point and click adventure" vibe so I think I'm going to try more of a traditional visual novel style thing. I think I'll go with colour art and I have a rough sort of story structure in mind. Mostly trying to push myself artistically. We'll see how it turns out, haha.

Hi! I’m so happy to see everyone’s looking forward to the jam!! :D I have experience just making visual novels with Decker, and I plan to make something related to the same larger storyline that all my works take place in. I wish everyone luck with their projects!! ^_^ I’m so excited to see what everyone makes.

its been too long since ive used decker

and im gonna use this jam to try and get back into using it again, because i absolutely loved making stuff in it

dunno why i stopped playing with it...

it'll also be a good excuse to... make myself actually do writing maybe, lol

i have no ideas coming to mind yet but im sure ill come up with something

since im still new to decker (used it for my latest blogpost) I was planning on something short, 5-10 minutes max.

I'm super stoked about the jam, but I don't have any definite ideas atm. I've been too focused on grad school and dealing with work BS to give this jam much thought... ;~;

I might do something sci-fi themed, tho!

we're both grad students thinking of writing sci-fi! and we replied to the post within a minute of each other! so much in common, hello!!

Oh that's so cool! Hi! Hello! What's your Master's going to be in? Mine is in Digital Content (although it's turned more into Organizational Development/Corporate Communications somehow?! I'm not complaining, though, as it's been super fascinating)!

hello! i'm new to basically all of this. the first jam i ever participated in (the discmaster jam) just ended this week, and i had so much fun that now i'm looking around for more jams to join. i found this one through the decker jam directory

i've used decker a little bit, but so far only with the intent to play around, not to make something. though after spending two weeks trying to learn godot, i'm relieved to go back to the relative comfort of decker. what's not comfortable for me is writing! i think i'm a decent non-fiction writer, but the last time i wrote a story or came up with a character was back in my pre-teens. no clear ideas yet, but maybe something sci-fi...

also, the second half of this jam overlaps with the neo-twiny jam! i'm planning to follow their 500 word constraint and submit my VN to both jams. something to consider for anyone else who's planning to write something short.

Hi! I have used Decker before, although it's been a while so I'm quite rusty. I have a vague idea about a short story that centers around a rock band/concert (as I've been listening to a lot of rock music lately lol). I think I'm gonna go with new characters, because I feel like it! so exciting!

The only thing I'm worried about is how I'm going to add a soundtrack, as I have never done that in any of my previous projects... but something tells me all the answers are already in the Decker community forums, so we will see how it goes :)

oh, decker doesn't support complex musical structures, so the best way to go around that I've found is millie's jankytunes and the jankysequencer linked on that page. there's also someone in this jam forum willing to help with music composition if you want to message their board!

As an alternative to JankyTunes which has already been mentioned, one way of getting soundtracks working within the restriction of "ten-second clips" is overriding the loop handler so it plays through a series of clips in sequence instead of just repeating one. Depending on if you'd rather record your music vs sequence it this could be an easier option. I have done something like this before so can help out if you want to go this route
